A Simple Step

Writers: AL, Cali
Date Posted: 3rd March 2009

Characters: Trellyn, Erita
Description: Trellyn goes to Erita for an abortion.
Location: Dolphin Cove Weyr
Date: month 1, day 23 of Turn 5

Trellyn held a steady run all the way from the beach where she'd left Kateena. She tried not to think, to shut her mind down and focus on her steps as she took the path that lead from the Hall to the Weyr. She'd find Erita, she had that much of a plan, but after that she didn't know. She knew she had to do something, but every option she'd let herself think of ended badly.

Erita herself was actually just landing in the bowl when Trellyn's feet finally brought her into the Weyr. The greenrider dismounted and slipped her gloves from her hands, then remove her helmet. She had actually been visiting a certain holder and the most recent interlude with him left her in quite a good mood. Movement caught her eye and she turned to see her good friend. Lifting a hand, she waved, grinning.

The dolphineer chalked it up to good fortune that she didn't have to hunt the girl down, for she didn't know if she'd remembered where her weyr was, and slowed down to a brisk walk as she approached. "I need to talk to you."

"Uh oh, what did I do now?" Erita's hand dropped to her side and her smile faded. There was something about Trellyn's tone that didn't settle well.

"Nothing." Trellyn assured her as she looked around the openness of the bowl. "Someplace private please?"

"Oh, sure." Erita nodded toward the green beside her. "Want to go up to my weyr?"

Trellyn silently nodded as Erita helped her aboard her green. When they were in her weyr, Trellyn sat down on the edge of the bed. She didn't know where to start, or how to even explain so she just said, "I'm pregnant."

"Okay." Erita nodded slowly. She wasn't quite sure how to react. Was it a good or bad thing? Trellyn seemed rather concerned about the matter so Erita was going to assume her friend wasn't particularly happy about the news. "You just found out?"

"Yes, Kibb told me." She explained. "Oh Erita, what am I going to do? The Hall's going to react badly as it is with me not being married. If they find out who the father is..."

"Bah, hall bred people don't know anything." Erita waved her hand in front of her face. "Come, surely they won't react _that_ badly. They do realize they're neighbor's to a Weyr, right?"

Trellyn shook her head, she didn't understand. "They realize it. And if it was one of the apprentices, it'd be dealt with, but I'm a journeywoman. They won't let me keep teaching, they'll send me away! I can't go away again, I can't!"

"Why in the world would they send you away?" Erita snorted. "Are they daft?"

"They want to set a good example. Having a loose woman around the Hall would only show the apprentices that it was okay." Trellyn explained. She didn't know for sure if Leisenn would send her away, but she knew alot of the master's would want her to. "And they'd press for who the father was. And if they ever discovered who it was, they would definitely send me away."

"Wherry shit, they dare daft." Erita rolled her eyes. Some people just had no sense at all. "Well, just get rid of it. I'll take you /between/ if you like."

Trellyn looked at the floor in silence. She knew deep down that was why she'd come to the Weyr, the reason she hadn't just crawled into bed and cried herself to sleep. Hearing her friend offer it though... she shook her head. "I don't know. If Ednan found out..."

"Ednan?" Erita's eyebrows lifted at the mention of a name. She hadn't mentioned him earlier, though Erita _was_ curious, she was more concerned about helping her friend solve her problem. "Is that your lover? The father?"

"Yes." she replied weakly, still unable to raise her head and look at her friend.

"Hm. Well, come on. We can go /between/ and take care of it and he'll never know."

Trellyn was scared; scared about what might happen if everyone knew she was pregnant, scared that people might think too much of all the time that she and Ednan spent together and figure it out, scared what her life would be like if she was pulled away from him. 'Taking care of it' seemed like such a simple answer, such an easy way to make it all just go away. In a haze, Trellyn stood up and took Erita's hand, letting her lead her towards her awaiting green dragon. Just a simple step /between/ and her world would stop spinning; her life would go back to normal.
