Birigundi

Birigundi

Demalia pushed her now empty plate away from her. She was sure that K'len had promised to meet her here in the dining cavern this evening.
She'd even had Tapheth check with his brown that it was the case earlier in the day.

"What's that look for, greenrider? Weyr food that bad after a taste of my mother's?" Birigundi smiled as he slipped into the seat across from her.

"I was supposed to meet K'len," she replied.

The annoyed tone in her voice told him all he needed to know, but he asked anyway. "And he didn't show?"

"I guess that much is obvious," she said, gesturing to the empty seat opposite.

"Do you know why?" Birigundi barely knew K'len, but from all he _did_
know he was not the type to stand a lady up.

"No, no I don't. I had Tapheth ask his Roath earlier, and he said yes, it was tonight we were supposed to meet." A look of what could almost be classed as regret crossed her face. "I was looking forwards to this."

"I'm sure he has a very good reason," her friend said gently. "But look on the bright side. At least now you have _me_."

"I do," she said gratefully. There was something about Birigundi...
"K'len's nice, you know. His brown seems to adore Tapheth, he was following her around for a few days. And K'len... He's got a nice smile, and I could really get to like him."

He didn't have to be a rider to understand the advantages to that. "I'm sure he's thinking the same thing about you. You have a nice smile yourself."

Demalia wasn't quite sure how to take that, she'd just about given up hope of Birigundi ever realising that she liked him as more than just a friend. That was part of the reason she had agreed to dinner with K'len in the first place. "You're sweet," she said after a moment."

He reached across the table and laid his hand on hers. "No, I mean it.
You have a nice smile. Don't give up on K'len yet. I'm sure he has a good reason."

"He better."

He shrugged off her grumpy reply. "Well, have Tapheth bespeak his dragon now and find out where he is. Maybe he is on his way. No harm in asking."

"You're right," she said. Concentrating, she asked Tapheth.

}:Tonibeth rose,:{ was the reply. }:Roath caught her.:{ "Ahh," she said after a moment, "It was a flight."

Birigundi smiled. "See, now that's a good excuse. Why can't _I_ get away with that one?"

"Well if you impress next time, then maybe you will," and maybe it would be Tapheth's flight that he'd win.

"All right, you convinced me," he teased. "I think I _will_ stand at the next Hatching."

"You better!"

Laughing he said, "Don't worry, Demalia, as long as I'm here and they will let me I will stand. I take very little convincing."

"Then have a drink with me, K'len is probably going to be busy tonight."

Birigundi smiled his agreement. "What will your drink be?"

"Just a white wine I think, a small one. I'm going to be busy tomorrow,"
she replied.

"Busy?"

"I'm teaching tomorrow," she replied.

He had almost forgotten that she was not yet in a fighting wing. "Will you miss teaching? When will you move up into the wings?"

"I'll move soon, there needs to be a spot for me."

"Well, maybe you'll be in K'len's wing," he said with a wink.

"You never know."

The runner smiled and stood up. "I'll go get our drinks then, and we can raise a glass to K'len... and his handsome brown."

Demalia admired Birigundi as he left the table. Why couldn't he see that she liked him. K'len was only a diversion.
