"Hey Handsome," Isily said lightly as she approached Zathris at the corner table. "Want some company?"
"Isily." Zathris pushed his chair out and stood, offering a broad smile to the familiar woman. "I could always do with some pleasant company." He motioned to the empty chair across from him. The Tavern in general was pretty empty. Zandreu was surely about somewhere, but where Zathris had no idea. Only one other patron besides he and the lady graced the area and that man looked to be so deep in thought an earthquake wouldn't phase him.
Zathris could do with some company indeed. Benani was caring for Ailnim that day and his thoughts tended to go toward a broodiness that wasn't like him as of late. It had only been ten days since the burial of Lord Benaroy. He needed something to distract him.
Isily grinned as she took the offered seat and watched him reseat himself as well. "Thanks. I usually hate to eat alone, but I heard Barthella was experimenting with some new recipies today since it's so slow. I'm kind of hoping she'll need some tasters on some of the more exotic dishes."
"I hadn't heard that." Zathris had only gotten there himself a short while again - Barthella hadn't even had the chance to bring him his drink. "I'll have to ask. I was mulling over what I should have to eat."
"Well, I guess it all depends on how adventurous you're feeling." She teased as she raised her eyebrows in a challenge.
"I suppose I should try to be adventurous on occasion." Zathris leaned in his chair, hooking one arm over the back. "Did you happen to hear anything specific about these recipes?"
Isily shook her head. "Nope, just heard she was. When I first got here, I stumbled upon her experimenting by accident and I ended up getting to taste three meat pies she was tinkering with. All very tasty too."
"Is that so." Zathris cast a glance at the door that led back to the kitchen. "Well, I do have to admit that something smells good."
Isily saw a young brownhaired girl come rump first through the kitchen door with a pitcher and two mugs in her hands approach their table. "Sorry about the wait, Barthella says drinks are on her since she's being a horrible hostess."
"Too caught up in her concoctions?" Zathris asked with a grin as he took the pitcher, then poured a mug for Isily before filling his own. "Tell Barthella we'll both try one of her specials today." He glanced at Isily, eyebrows raised. "I believe my companion is particularly interested in an exotic one. Give me something different, then we can both give each other a bite of what we're given. Sound good, Isily?"
She nodded as Neddie, the tavern girl, grinned. "Ah, so you heard she was inspired this morning huh? Well, the dumplings I just tasted weren't anywere near serveable, but if you're brave enough I'll tell her you're interested."
"Let's be brave then." Isily agreed with a wink to Zathris. As Neddie walked away she added, "If Barthella poisons us, it'll just be a way into a free bottle of good wine."
"That is, if we don't die." Zathris pointed out, chuckling softly. "I hope we don't die. I could go for some free wine."
Isily raised her mug of on the house ale and gave an impish grin. "To our health then. May a fun experiment only result in a stomach ache."
"Here, here!" Zathris clinked his mug against Isily's, then raised it to his lips. Well, there was nothing like an experiment with a friend!
