Welcome to Cyclone Wing

Writers: Cali, Jane
Date Posted: 28th April 2009

Characters: K'hetah, B'vin
Description: K'hetah meets a new wingrider for Cyclone Wing.
Location: Dolphin Cove Weyr
Date: month 2, day 11 of Turn 5

"Did you sleep in here?" the Cyclone Wingleader asked when he entered the office he shared with his 'Second and 'Third to find an unfamiliar greenrider waiting. K'hetah was earlier than usual and had expected to beat K'deren and Eleada in, but this young man was earlier than the three of them.

"No Sir." B'vin sat up from where he'd been hunched over studying drill sheets. "I tried to catch you yesterday but you weren't in the Weyr. I'm to join your wing." He passed over the hide N'vanik had given him.

"Hmm. B'vin. Welcome to Cyclone Wing. Sit down again." K'hetah rounded the desk and settled himself down in his own chair and read over the brief note from the Weyrleader. "From the Weyrling Wing?"

B'vin nodded as he took his seat again. "I was recovering from Threadscore. Serenth and I are one hundred percent again." Well, near to it.

"Drills will give you a chance to prove that, won't they?" the bronzerider said amiably. "When were you injured?"

"Early month twelve," the greenrider replied. He didn't like that his health was being doubted.

"And what were your injuries?" K'hetah asked. "Or, what were Serenth's, more importantly." In the bronzerider's opinion very few rider injuries that healed well enough for Fall ever needed considering in drills. The dragon injuries were often - if not always - more important.

He looked down at his leg momentarily. It looked quite normal with his pants covering it up, of course, underneath that layer of hide was a smattering of scars from two separate Threadfall injuries. "My thigh, completely healed. Serenth's side had some light threading, and her wing had a bad wrench from how we landed in the bowl. She's completely healed as well, not loss of speed or turn mobility."

"That's good to hear. Were you in Cyclone when you were injured?" Often riders didn go back to their old Wing but K'hetah's time leading Cyclone was a matter of months and so the other man might have left before he arrived.

"No..." B'vin hesitated, "I was just filling in for the one Fall, they needed dragons and I was available."

"So you were scored while in Cyclone but you were only on loan to the Wing?"

B'vin shook his head when the man misunderstood him. "I was assigned to the weyrling wing as an assistant. I just filled in during a Threadfall, they had too many holes in their wing and needed help."

"Ahh. And why were you a weyrlingstaff assistant?"

"Because I was scored in O'dan's Fall." He said flatly. The Wingleader would look in his file, so why try and gloss over anything. He knew what it looked like, like he was Thread prone, a poor flyer, a liability. He knew he wasn't, and if K'hetah would just give him a chance he would prove it.

"That's _two_ scorings?"

B'vin just nodded. It wasn't worth the reply. If he made excuses, blaming it on O'dan and the fact that he was a fill in, he'd just look weak. And he wasn't weak.

"You've not been very lucky, have you? Well, we shall do what we can to make sure that doesn't happen again. You make sure you know how to duck and I'll do my best not to lead us into any avoidable disasters."

"I think that sounds like the best option." B'vin replied evenly. He couldn't tell if the Wingleader was being sarcastic or not.

"So, you're ready to drill with us this morning? We're going out over the sea for a few low flying drills. You done much of that? It's tricky over the water because there aren't so many references and the light can mislead ... the rider more than the dragon, as a rule."

B'vin nodded and did his best to keep his annoyance out of his voice. "The Weyrleader wants me to observe today, but yes, I've done it plenty. We fly and do drills over the ocean with the Senior Weyrlings."

"Good. You can watch and tell us where we could improve," the dark-haired bronzerider said, not at all ruffled by the younger man's tone.

"Sure." B'vin said, not expecting that reply at all. He shifted uncomfortably in his chair for a moment then asked, "Is there anything else sir? When are drills today?" He knew where they met, he'd seen the wing plenty of times in the bowl.

"Right after breakfast. Eighth candlemark. I'm still not very ... appreciative of this heat and so we drill as early as possible and if things don't go well have another go before midday so we can have most afternoons off."

Afternoons off would be good. Despite being cleared for duty, B'vin still liked to do his therapy swims most every day, and it was nice to get it done before dark. He stood up, and turned to leave the office. "Okay, I'll be there."

"Good - and welcome to Cyclone Wing, B'vin."
