Location: Dragonsfall Weyr
Date: month 2, day 17 of Turn 5
Maret leaned over and whispered close to Imarre's ear, "I thought E'naer
would never stop talking."
"He did seem to go on forever," Imarre agreed.
"I think he's trying to over compensate for the fact that we still have
no Weyrlingmaster. Or at least he's trying to over compensate for
_something_." He gave Imarre a friendly nudge.
"Yeah," Imarre just said. He had not yet been in Weyr long enough to
really have any opinion or knowledge about it. "I'm glad it's luch
time now," he said.
"It couldn't come early enough for me," Maret agreed. "It's a nice day.
Want to take lunch outside today?"
"Can we do that? Fresh air would be nice," Imarre asked. He still
wasn't clear with all the weyr's rules. They were more lax in some
regard than in the hall.
"Of course we can do that!" Maret had been here too long to remember
just how restrictive the outside world could be. "Why don't we go up on
the Plateau?"
"Sure," Imarre replied. "Last time I've spent this much time indoors
and cooped up in a classroom was when I was a junior apprentice," he
remarked when they walked towards the dining hall.
"Oh yeah, you came from a Hall, didn't you." That would explain it.
"Yes, from the woodcraft hall," Imarre said.
"What?" Manet asked, actually stopping in his tracks and placing a hand
on the candidates arm to halt him as well. "How old are you?"
"Sixteen," Imarre replied and cocked his head to regard him curiously.
He did a quick calculation in his head. "I guess I must have left then
just before you came. I went to the Hall, but only for a few months
before I was found on Search."
"Really?" Imarre said, delighted to find a craft-mate, "do you still
craft?"
"Not quite. Not officially, anyway," Manet admitted. "I became a
carpenter when I came to the Weyr. It was what I always wanted to do
anyway. Just without all that extra stuff, like paper making, planting
trees, and all that. I just get to go into the workshop and _make_
something."
"So you skipped the formal training and went right into the
specializing," Imarre laughed.
"Pretty much," his friend chuckled. "I don't have the fancy knots, but
I every Hold, Hall and Weyr needs laymen carpenters who will lower
themselves enough to fix a cabnet for you."
"Everyone can't be a master," Imarre said with an understanding nod.
"Or even a journeyman in my case. What about you? Are you going to
keep crafting?"
"I try to. I truly like it, and besides, my grandfather was a master,
so there's some family preassure too," Imarre said dryly. He was
delighted to find a kindred spirit and was loosing his reticience
around his new friend.
Maret snorted. "Oh, you want family pressure? I was the first person
in my family to actually go to a Hall. Can you imagine how livid my
father was when I was Searched?"
"As livid as mine was when my big brother chose to go to the
beastcraft hall?" Imarre suggested.
"Well, that's possible." Father's could be rather... touchy. "But at
least it was a _craft_."
"Yes, but no the family's. My dad tends to be _loud_ when he gets
angry," Imarre grinned.
"And he's not mad you're here? Or is promising to remain in the craft
appeasing him?"
"I was expecting yelling, but he thinks that being Searched is a
honour," Imarre replied. "So, no yelling."
"Hey," Maret interjected, almost as an after thought, "Do you want to
come down to the carpenter's shop sometime and see some of the stuff I'm
working on?"
"Sure, that sounds like fun," Imarre replied.
"Great," his friend grinned, putting a friendly hand on his shoulder.
"It's a promise then. I can't wait to show you some of the stuff I can
do."
