Birigundi looked over the rim of his mug of ale at the young drudge bustling about, clearing the tables. There it was, that glance in his direction! She had been looking his way since he sat down, and the candidate didn't mind looking back. The young woman couldn't be much older or younger than he was. She was pretty to be sure, with her mid-length blonde hair, crystal blue eyes, fair skin, and the hint of a permanent blush at her cheeks... There was something about her look that was a bit... unusual.
He stood up to refill his mug, mostly for an excuse to move around a bit. Turning around, sure enough, there were those blue eyes glancing in his direction. She looked away quickly though as their eye met for the briefest of moments. Birigundi grinned. She was shy, this one. Well, he would just have to help her along. He walked his mug of ale over and leaned on the table next to her.
When she glanced up at him he smiled. "I'm guessing you have a bit of northern blood in you."
"It's a good guess," Nialyn smiled shyly back. Shards, he was even _more_ good-looking up close than from far away!
He liked her smile. "But your accent doesn't sound northern. You were born here in the South, I take it."
She nodded, busying her hands with the folding of napkins. "It's my mother who was born in the north."
He picked up a napkin and started helping her fold. "When I Impress my dragon I intend to go north, just to see it. It must be beautiful. I know the people sure seem to be."
She blushed at that, glancing at him again. "Parts of it are beautiful.
But it's nothing like the lushness of the south. Or so Mama says." Her blush deepened when their eyes met, and she quickly looked back to the napkin she had in her hands.
Shards. She'd seen him with the girls here in the dining cavern. The girls he usually talked to were so...open. Witty. And the ones who were dragonriders were so sharding _pretty_. She was completely different from them. She'd always wanted to work up the nerve to go say _something_ to him - even if it was just a murmured "hello," and now here he was, _talking_ to her, and she had no idea what to say to him!
"I'd love to hear more about it. When are you finished with your duties? Maybe we can... go for a walk or go somewhere to talk." When he looked at her he made no attempt to hide the look in his eyes that suggested that he hoped it would lead to more.
The holdbred girl that was still inside her hesitated. Nialyn had been at the Weyr for nearly six months now, but it was so sharding hard to just let go of her inhibitions - the inhibitions that had been bred into her, that had influenced her thoughts and actions ever since she'd been a little girl.
But she was at the Weyr now. A place full of freedoms and temptations. And men. Lots of men. Handsome men. Charming men. Men like Birigundi. Nialyn had fallen to the Weyr's temptation once before -
she'd lain with a young bluerider only two Turns older than she. She'd been...a little tipsy that night - had it been the night of the Hatching? She couldn't remember now...
Nialyn had to admit that the other part of her felt a little smug that _Birigundi_ wanted to go "take a walk" with her. To take a tumble would be more accurate phrasing! Was she really so attractive? Her eyes flickered as she searched his face, shyly though. Blushing when he didn't look away, she ducked her head to concentrate on folding another napkin.
"I'm almost done in here for the night," she murmured. "After these napkins are folded, I'd... **What are you getting yourself _into_, Nialyn?!** "I'd like to go take a walk with you..."
He smiled, glad that she had accepted his offer. Birigundi loved all kinds of women, passionate, intellectual, fiery... but tonight he was in the mood for someone... sweet. And this girl with her blushes and shy smiles was just what he was looking for. "Then I will help you fold so we can take our walk." And take their time later...
