Thank Faranth for restdays. Sarban found himself already down near the river, just waiting for the candlemarks of fishing to begin. He and Corowal and some of the male holders would be doing a bit of bank fishing. It was supposed to be a good day, according to the dolphin hall. Checking his gear and pulling out his rod, he began to tie the hook and bait it, relishing the male activity.
"Sarban," Corowal greeted. "I brought Corofel along, I hope you don't mind." The boy was trailing after his father. Although he liked fishing, he wasn't so sure he liked to do it with grown ups.
"Ah no, the more the merrier." Sarban finished his pole and then he looked toward the others. "Sposed to be good fishing today," he said sagely.
"Do the fish know that too?" Corowal asked with a grin.
"We shall see, Cousin, we shall see..." Sarban glanced at Corofel, wondering if he needed help. "Where's your pole son?"
"Dad's carrying it," Corofel replied. He looked at the steward curiously. He hadn't had much dealings with his father's cousin in the past. "Do you have kids?" he asked.
"Me? No." Sarban smiled as he finished his own preparation, gesturing to Corowal that he'd help him if he needed anything.
"Why not?" the boy asked. Corowal handed him his pole and wrapped out his own.
Sarban shrugged. "Well I was at sea for a long while and I haven't met the right lady just yet." Of course he was still in his prime and virile, so he wasn't quite worried about his legacy, yet.
"You really should start thinking about getting married, you know," Corowal said off-handedly while he attached baits to his own and his son's poles.
"Oh? I don't think everyone has to be in a hurry. I've got plenty of turns.." He knew men who had sired children in their fifth decade, so he wasn't at all worried. Casting his line, he found a good spot to stand and waited.
"Ah, but you're Steward now. You have to set an example. Repopulating Pern and such," Corowal said. "Besides you miss a lot of the fun of being married."
"Aye? What's so fun about it?" Sarban grinned, wanting to hear this from the newly married Lord Holder.
Corowal lowered his voice so his son couldn't overhear when he told his cousin exactly what kind of fun a newlywed could have.
"Ah but cousin..I'm afraid I've had that without having the obligation of marriage." Sarban chuckled. It was true, going from port to port, it was quite easy enough to find a willing woman.
"Not any longer. As steward, you should act responsible. I believe my wife knows a nice girl for you," Corowal said and wiggled his finger.
Pulling in his line, Sarban moved a bit to the left and recasted it. "A nice girl? Pardon me, Cousin, but I believe I'd want a woman." He rolled his eyes and grinned, making sure it went over Corofel's head. He understood Corowal marrying a younger girl since he needed to produce children for the Hold and all that, but Sarban didn't want some slip of a thing.
"Girl, woman, it's just a matter of time," Corowal said.
"Aye but by the time they reach it, I could be too old to enjoy it." And at that moment, he felt a tug on the line. "Hot shells! I've got one!"
"Don't let it get away!" Corowal cheered.
After some serious reeling and letting out line and reeling some more, Sarban finally fought the fish-a nice-sized redfin-and won. "Corofel, quick get a net son."
Corofel ran in with the net and caught the fish into it. "Nice one," he grinned and watched the flapping fish.
"Mmm.." Taking the creature out of the net, Sarban ran a line through its mouth, then tied one end to a pole. Anchoring the pole, he then put the fish back into the water, to keep it alive. "Now, how's about we try for another?"
"I hope I have your luck with fishes," Corowal murmured. His line was dead still on the water.
