Description: Y'nub calls for help when he spots a hold on fire.
Location: Dragonsfall Weyr
Date: month 4, day 18 of Turn 5
As the first riders from the wing came over the flames to drop the water,
Teseada looked down to see Y'nub with a young lad. It was hard to tell, but
it was possible that both were hurt. Without thinking, she ordered Onnyth
down in a safe area, and dismounted, sliding down the side of her dragon in
her hurry. "Y'nub? Are you alright?"
Y'nub dumped the boy onto the ground a good distance away and tried to
straighten up. A wave of coughs caught his chest and he suddenly felt very
dizzy. He had enough sense in him to lower himself to the ground, but then
everything started to dim until there was only faint patches of light and
the sound of his rasping breaths... and Teseada.
"Slowly," she said. "Try to take it slowly." Thank Faranth she'd slung a
canteen over her shoulder before leaving. "Here, take a sip of this while I
check the boy over." The canteen was thrust in his direction.
She was no expert, but weyrling training did include basic first aid. From
what she could see, both of them had burns, but it was hard to tell under
the covering of dirt and soot from the fire.
"Is he okay?" Y'nub asked weakly after a drink. He still had way too many
spots floating around for his liking, but he could tell that Teseada was
crouched over the unmoving boy.
"He's unconscious, but he's breathing, and I don't want to move him again
until a healer has checked him out. I've sent K'preq back to the Weyr for to
bring a healer out here and some supplies. I don't like the look of that
bump on his head."
Y'nub sighed in relief and laid his head back against the ground. Now that
the danger was over and the adrenaline was wearing off, he could feel the
stinging and throbbing of his face, neck, and shoulder. He guessed he'd
gotten burned, but couldn't really remember how. "Do I even want to know
how bad I look?"
"You'll still have the ladies running after you once you've cleaned up a
bit. But you might want to get a haircut before you go after greenriders
again."
He grimaced and reached up to touch his hair. As he did, he saw a thin line
of blood running down his forearm from his hand and noticed that both his
hands had deep cuts on them. He didn't remember getting those either.
"That's what I get," he grumbled to himself. "I should have just stuck to
digging ditches with Larweth."
"Careful there, I'll get the healer to look at you one he gets here." She'd
told K'preq to bring a man, mindful of holder sensibilities.
After a few moments of resting his eyes, Y'nub opened them to see Teseada
still hovering over him. "Still here?"
"I'm not leaving him," Teseada pointed to the unconscious boy. "You think
I'd really stay for you? After all you've done?"
He felt a twinge in his chest and realized that yes, he _had_ thought she'd
stayed for him. Annoyed at himself more than her for once, he sat up,
dismissing the pain in his head and surveyed the scene. Larweth and several
others were kicking loose dirt up high into the air, aiming the soil so that
it landed on the now smoldering roof tops. There were still dragons in the
air as well, carrying cauldrons of water to the smaller buildings that now
looked to be completely destroyed. He saw a new dragon wink from /between/
and land out by the rest. It wasn't long before her rider and passenger
were running up to him, a healer's bag evident in a hand. "Help the boy
first." He motioned to the lad who was partially hidden behind Teseada.
"Yes, he needs you to look at him, he's been out for a while, and that,"
Teseada pointed to the lump on the boy's head, "Doesn't look good."
Satisfied that the boy was receiving the best care he could, she turned to
the bronzerider. "You need to stay still, and wait for the healer to see to
you. Don't make me make it an order."
He ignored her and watched as the healer examined the boy. "One of the
support beams was on fire. It broke free and pinned him down."
The healer nodded, continuing his gentle examination for a moment or two.
"How long has he been unconscious?"
"I'm not sure..." Y'nub admitted, unsettled by the fact that it felt like
only moments ago but the progress of the dragons and riders to control the
fire meant that much more time had passed. "I got it off of him... then
brought him out here..." He looked up at Teseada, hoping she could fill in
the time.
"Half a candlemark, no more."
"Well we need to get him to the Weyr infirmary once he's conscious, and you
too bronzerider." The healer started to make notes. "I'll just check over
the rest of the injured, but I expect you can get yourself there under your
own steam, but have someone go /between/ with you."
Y'nub stood, annoyed that the healer thought him incapable in some form.
Even though the world _did_ spin slightly, Y'nub didn't let on. He'd make
it to Larweth and the bronze could take them home even if he was unconscious.
"I'm fine. Larweth says there is no more digging to do so we'll go back. A
few bandages and I'll finish my sweep."
"No," Teseada said. "You listen to the healer, I'll have someone else cover
the ground."
Y'nub opened his mouth to argue with Teseada, it was his first reaction
since it seemed all they were able to do, but then he closed it as the
action reminded him of the pain that was starting to creep in on the side of
his face. The adrenaline and shock was starting to wear off, and he guessed
that soon there would be a world of hurt for the injuries he'd suffered.
"Fine."
"Now, go. Let Larweth see you are getting some help."
For once, he listened to the goldrider and very slowly made his way to
Larweth's back. The bronze was careful to have as gentle a takeoff as
possible and the two were soon circling over the hold. Y'nub got one good
look at it before they winked /between/. It was no longer ablaze, but there
was till some trails of gray smoke trailing up into the sky. It had been
stupid of him to go in that barn, stupid of him to try and save that boy.
He'd paid for it too, the cuts on his hands, the burns on his face and
shoulder; still, he couldn't help but feel that if the boy lived that maybe
it had been worth it.
