Briata

Briata

Briata rapped lightly on the door to the Headwoman's office. She had
procrastinated long enough - it was time to officially settle in as a member
of the Weyr, even if she wasn't sure how permanent it would be. The young
woman waited until she was given permission to enter, then did so.
"Headwoman Solieira?" Her voice was soft as she spoke. "I'm sorry to
bother you, but may I have a word?"

Sol looked up from a stack of hide that seemed to have grown when she turned
her back. Chuckling dryly - hidework never went away - she waved in the
young woman with a curious smile. "Hello, lass. Briata, isn't it?" She
couldn't recall immediately, but it didn't matter why she was here.
"Yes, Briata." The young woman was surprised the headwoman knew her name.
"I do hope I'm not imposing, but I need to speak with you regarding my
residency here. I...I need to gain quarters of my own and assigned to
work."

Sol knew everything that went on at the Weyr. Names included! No surprise
there.

The Headwoman nodded as Briata came in, and smiled at her. "Of course.
I'll be glad to help. Sit down and tell me a little about yourself. I
typcially hear when we get new arrivals, but not much beyond they are new.
So what would you like to do? Do you have particular skills? And any
special needs with quarters?"

"No special needs." Briata would be fine with any quarters. She didn't
require much. "As for skills, I can sew, embroider...I love children and
have experience with them."

Sol smiled and nodded, and pulled out a hide that showed open weyrs. "I
have one here on the second level that used to belong to a journeyman
Smith - he transfered back to the Hall a month or so ago. Its small, but
should do for you, hmm?"

Another hide was consulted, and another nod. "And you could help out in the
creche half the day and work on sewing and cooking the other half?"

"If that is where I could be of most use, yes." Briata certainly wasn't
going to use the Weyr's resources and not contribute. "I will do whatever I
can to help."

"Of course, lass. I'm always willing to make changes to if you find the
work not to your liking. Except, I do have to have _someone_ to scrub the
pots!" She smiled, her nose turning up in genuine good humor.

"Don't worry, lass. There are all sorts of young women here for you to
talk to, and make friends.... you'll settle in fine." If Sol knew the
_other_ thing about Briata, she might have said something different, but
alas, her spy network extended only to gossip about new arrivals and that
spread _fast_.

"Alright?"

"Yes ma'am." Briata's smile brightened a little. The Headwoman was
certainly friendly and her manner helped put Briata a little more at ease.
"Thank you."

Sol smiled. She was an expert at welcoming new arrivals. Turns and turns
of it and it still was one of her favorite parts of being Headwoman. "Well
then, shall I show you to your new weyr? And do you need me to send a
drudge for any belongings you brought?"

"It's not much, I can carry it." Briata slowly rose, expecting to be
escorted. "I have some things that will arrive with the tithing train from
Garnet Valley." It was a good thing Solieira offered to show her - Briata
doubted her ability to find her own quarters. She'd had to ask several
people on the way just to find the Headwoman's office.

"That sounds good, dear. Lets go for a walk, hmm?" She smiled again at
Briata and lead the way into the corridors.
