"Karri, you there?" called out the goldrider as she knocked on her friend's
door.
"Hey Teseada, come on in." Karri called as she closed the curtain that
separated her small living area from her green's ledge.
"Got a few minutes to talk?"
She motioned to her small couch, the only place to sit in her weyr besides
the bed, and sat down herself. "For you, I've got at least thirty."
"I might just need them," said Teseada. "After the day I've had. You heard
about the fire? Right?"
"Of course," Karri said with a quick nod. "We would have come, but Onnyth
said they had enough help."
"And you know who called it in?"
Something about Teseada's tone caught Karri's attention, but she figured it
must just be from the stress of the event. "The sweeprider. And good for
them keeping a watchful eye. It's an example we'll use for the weyrlings
too."
"And not just any sweeprider," Teseada settled herself a little more
comfortably on the sofa before continuing. "It was him, Y'nub."
"Really?" Karri's tone should have been more wary, but it came out a little
too curious. The greenrider's opinion of the bronze boy had softened
somewhat since he'd all but saved them from those lecherous sailors down at
Shadow Cove. Still, it was an opinion she kept to her self since it didn't
absolve him from his behavior towards Teseada in the past.
"Yeah, Larweth called Onnyth, and when I got the wing mobilized and out
there. Well I saw him rescuing a young man, barely more than a boy."
Karri was surprised. She hadn't realized it was that serious of a fire.
"Is he okay?"
"I think the lad is going to be fine, apparently he was trying to get a
runner beast out of the stable, or something like that, and he got hit by
something on the head. When I got there, Y'nub was dragging him out. All I
could do was check that he was breathing and send someone back here for a
healer."
"Huh." she didn't know what to say. It sounded so unlike Y'nub to be
interested in anyone but himself; but then again...
"I didn't think he had it in him." Teseada paused, "After what he's done in
the past I had him down as a heartless tunnelsnake."
"Maybe he's grown up a bit? Or learned his lesson." Karri suggested.
People did change didn't they? But did they change that much?
"I don't know," Teseada shrugged. "Maybe I was totally wrong, maybe not.
But I hadn't seen that side of him before."
Karri cocked her head as she thought about Y'nub. He was a very confusing
person for sure. "Well, at least we know he _has_ two sides."
"Trouble is we don't know which is the real one."
"You mean more dominant." Karri pointed out. "He obviously has the
capability for both heroics and cruelty. But I suppose we all do. I've
done and said things to people I'm not proud of."
"Me too, but what if one of those things was getting Y'nub so totally
wrong?"
Karri was silent for a moment as she thought about what her friend was
really just circling around. "Do you still have feelings for him?" it was
a curious sort of query, not accusatory, or mirthful, just thoughtful.
"I, I don't know. Sometimes I think I could hate him, like I wouldn't care
if thread ate him. But other times, I just look at him and all the bad
things go out of the window."
"He was very special to you for awhile there." Karri said quietly. She was really out of her depth, having never been in love herself before. "Maybe you could think of those good parts about him next time you just want Thread to eat him."
Teseada shrugged. "I don't know what I want anymore. But maybe I was wrong
about him."
"Maybe." Karri echoed. She didn't know though. Was someone who could
manipulate another person for power capable of changing?
"But I don't think I'm going to worry about that right now. How about
joining me for dinner?"
Karri stood up, she'd already eaten, but wasn't one to ever refuse the offer of food. It accounted for quite a few of the pounds she'd put on since coming to the Weyr. "Sure, let's go."
