"I don't get it," Imarre sighed, observing the people around them. "Yesterday I saw him cuddling with another boy, today he's kissing a girl," he pointed a pair in shadowy corner. "Can't these people decide with who they want to be?" Of course, part of him would have liked to kiss that girl too. She was quite pretty and curvy.

"I don't know, I think they look sweet," Maret shrugged. "He looks... happy. What's wrong with doing something that makes you feel good?"

"Nothing. I'm not used to see it shown so openly," Imarre replied.

"Not everyone is ashamed of who they are, Imarre." It was the same argument, over and over and over... The candidate never seemed to tire of it, but his lover certainly did.

"Don't they ever hurt anyone with their behaviour?" Imarre asked.

"Why should anyone care? It's their own business."

"Not if they hurt someone else," Imarre said and turned to look Maret. "You don't get it, do you?" he sighed.

"No, I don't." And he was sick and tired of always talking about how traumatic sex was for Imarre. He sure stopped complaining as soon as Maret ran his lips all over his body. "Are you trying to tell me _you_ are hurt because he's kissing her? Do _you_ want to kiss him? Is that what you're trying to tell me? 'Cause if you do, that's fine. Go kiss him already."

"NO! I don't want to kiss him...or her. I just want to kiss _you_ " Imarre nearly shouted, flailing with his arms. The whole notion of just go and kiss someone shocked him.

"For Faranth's sake, Imarre, calm down," Maret muttered, looking around in embarrassment. The whole Weyr didn't need to hear them fighting!

"Sorry," Imarre said with embarrassed grin. His moods tended to change rapidly.

A slight smile in response pulled at the corner of Maret's lips, but it was forced and was meant only to try to keep the peace. Imarre just couldn't seem to hold on to one emotion for more than the span of a few moments, and Maret was feeling exhausted by the constant swing back and forth. "Let's just finish our drinks, all right?"

"All right," Imarre agreed. "So, what are you doing tomorrow?"

Maret sipped at his drink thoughtfully. Should he be honest? Or was it better to just avoid the fight that would follow? "I'm not sure. I have a lot of projects to work on down in the workshop."

"Well, I have nothing besides candidate classes," Imarre said and sounded now like he was moping. He wished Maret were showing more possessiveness of his time. He was starting to wonder how deep Maret's feelings for him were. If he was in love, shouldn't he show a little jealousy? Imarre felt a stab every time he saw Maret talk with someone else. He sighed.

Maret fought the urge to roll his eyes. It seemed Imarre had a talent for making himself sound pitiful and miserable. "Look, there are things that have to get done. I still have a job to do."

"I know that, I understand," Imarre assured him, but his body-language told different story. He wanted to be cosseted and assured. "Then will you stop whining like I'm doing this just to hurt you or something?" Maret sighed, not sure if he wanted to just forget the drink and leave or down it and ask for a whole lot more.

"I'm not whining. Is little understanding too much to ask?" Imarre said.

"What? What? What am I supposed to be understanding this time? Why don't you just tell me what it is I'm supposed to be understanding so I can tell you that I understand and then we don't have to talk about it any more."

"You don't seem to understand my points of view," Imarre almost snarled.

"Well, they seem to change to frequently, it's hard for me to keep up!" Maret shot back.

"You just don't get it!" Imarre shouted and stormed off in anger.

Maret just rolled his eyes and went back to his drink. What else was new?
