"So what did I do to upset you?" Zathris asked once the small group had stopped for the night. Isily had gone quiet ever since their last conversation and he could only think that he had said or done something wrong. Wrong expression on his face? It was impossible to know. The silence between them had been uncomfortable and Zathris hadn't liked it. They were friends and they shouldn't be upset with one another. If he did something, he wanted to know - and to apologise for it.
"You didn't do anything. I wasn't upset." She assured him. The holder they were staying with that night had just left them on the porch to check on the runners before bed, so for the moment they were alone.
"You ran off...well, galloped off...like you were." Zathris pointed out, "Not to mention there was that expression on your face just before you did so."
She knew what he was referring to, she just didn't realize she was that transparent. She thought about denying it again, he'd probably back off, but she trusted him, she could tell him, couldn't she? "I've just... well, getting out of a relationship. Not by choice though I suppose. It's just hard sometimes I guess."
"I'm sorry to hear that." Ah. Zathris connected it with the comment he had made just before she had gone off. "Well, he's an idiot for letting you go."
Isily just nodded, she'd told him the same thing. "I know."
"Surely there's someone out there who will appreciate you and love you." Zathris smiled to the technician. She really was sweet, intelligent, like Benani in some ways. "Someone more deserving."
"Deserving maybe, but that doesn't matter to the heart now does it?" She replied with a trace of bitterness in her voice.
"Someone deserving, someone you can love and who will love you back." It hurt him to see her hurt and Zathris reached over to cover her hand with his. "I'm sorry. I wish I could do something to help."
The contact felt nice, and stirred in her something she really shouldn't feel. Not for Zathris. She withdrew the hand but smiled at him so he wouldn't feel rejected. "I'll be fine. It was good to just tell someone."
There was hesitancy in Zathris' body. He leaned forward a little more, as if he were going to try and take her hand back, but then he pulled away as well. "If you ever need to talk, I'm willing to listen."
"Thank you." Isily stood, aware that the holder was returning and wishing for a bit of space from Zathris. "I should really be getting to bed, Rulio and I have alot of work to do if we're to run wires for that new add on and still be ready to leave by lunch."
Zathris nodded slowly. "I'll see you in the morning." He felt awful and wished he had known something before he made his comment. I had hurt her and Zathris never wanted to do that. He wished there was some way to fix things, but there wasn't - and that bothered him.
