"You. B'lamick!" The Weyrwoman raised her voice and pointed at the young bronzerider as she caught sight of him leaving the morning meal. "Over here"
B'lamick changed his direction of travel to meet the Weyrwoman, "Good Morning Zharesti."
"Don't 'good morning' me. Is it true that you took the former Lady Briata away at Hatching time?" the Weyrwoman asked, rather put out that somebody should defy her in that way. (Not exactly defy her, because she hadn't _exactly_ ordered him to do anything, or not do anything, which would have been more useful, but still, the new Weyrwoman did feel she had been thwarted.
"Yes." B'lamick tried to appear indifferent. He had been afraid this might get back to her. "She was getting headaches from the dragons and wanted to get away for awhile."
"And the Hatching just _happened_ to occur while she was away?" The Weyr wasn't some Hold where women were confined regardless of their wishes and technically Briata had been free to come and go as she pleased, but still - The girl had made no secret of her desire not to Stand.
"No, I think the excitement of the day probably contributed to it." B'lamick replied.
"You think that, do you?" the woman said, eyeing him closely as if that would tell her whether this had been an open defiance or just a error of judgement. "Did she _ask_ you to take her somewhere else?"
"Yes." he said. "Zharesti, she told me she didn't want to Impress, and while I can't say that I understand or even agree with her, I did agree to help her. She would have ended up taking a runner or hopping a boat or something if she couldn't get away by dragon."
"Didn't want to Impress?" The Weyrwoman frowned. "Didn't want to be Lady Warder any more. Didn't want to Impress? I don't suppose you have any idea what the young 'lady' _does_ want to do?"
When the Weyrwoman put it like that, Briata did seem sort of fickle. "Well, I believe she wants to be a weaver."
"At the Weyr?" Zharesti asked, hoping it wasn't so. "There's a very big continent up north that would no doubt be glad to have her."
"But if she left, then she couldn't be persuaded to change her mind and Stand in the future." Which was what B'lamick really wanted. He knew she'd make a great dragonrider.
"Who's going to do this 'persuading'?" Zharesti asked, eyeing the young man more closely. "You? I though you were partial to the young greenrider - Tey? - the one who hit the bluerider."
B'lamick felt his jaw drop and he promptly shut it. How could the Weyrwoman know of his feelings for Tey? Were they that obvious? "No, no, you misunderstand, we're just friends, Tey and I. And Briata and I too I mean, just friends."
"You're just friends with two different young women?" Zharesti asked with a grin. Weyr or not some things at some ages were always headed for trouble "How well is that working?"
"It works fine because we're just _friends_." He assured the Weyrwoman. The line the conversation was taking was making him very uncomfortable and he almost wished she would remember she was upset with him. Almost. "Tey and I have been friends since before she Impressed, and Briata is still married to Lord Ishek."
"Is she?" The Weyrwoman frowned. "Surely that can't be right. I must look into that ..." She nodded at B'lamick. "Thank you for reminding me, bronzerider."
"What are you going to look into?"
"Why the girl is still married, of course." Zharesti beamed. "I'm sure I can sort something out."
