Description: The Weyrleaders discuss a few things
Location: Dolphin Cove Weyr
Date: month 6, day 18 of Turn 5
"On the whole, the weyrlings have been doing very well," Traelyn said,
looking over the hides spread out over N'vanik's desk.
"And I'll be glad to have them in the Wings." Their numbers were still
low, and although the riders had been doing well making up for it, a
few more wingriders would give them some relief.
She looked up at him. "With the transfers that have been coming in, our
numbers aren't as dismal as they were." But shards, if only the queens
would rise to mate more often than they did...
"Things will keep getting better. In another turn or two, we'll be as
strong as any Weyr on Pern." It would be so good to be in a position
to offer help, rather than asking for it so often.
She liked his optimism. Smiling, she looked back down at their notes.
"We are strong, N'vanik."
"We are," he agreed. "I was so scared after Loseth won. Afraid I would
fail you, and the Weyr." He had a track record of screwing things up
and feared that he would somehow take Dolphin Cove down with him.
"You've found your place, N'vanik. You've stepped up and have met the
challenges in front of us. I honestly didn't expect any less from you."
"Thanks. I still need to hear things like that." He smiled at her.
"Some days, I believe it. Other days I wonder if someone else would
have done a better job." Like someone that actually knew what they
were doing, someone who had led at least a Wing in Fall instead of
having to figure it all out leading the whole Weyr.
"I think we all compare ourselves to others." Faranth knew she still did
compare herself to the other goldriders, and Weyrwomen, she knew or had
known. "Sometimes it's appropriate, but other times we need to find our own
way."
"I don't really have a hard time doing things my own way." He
chuckled, but then he was reminded of something. "You heard about
Zharesti, right? Making everyone of age at River Bluff Stand?"
She nodded.
"You wouldn't pull something like that, would you?"
"No," she said softly, but there was a hint of a snarl in her voice, and
the look in her eyes was an intense one. "I wouldn't make anyone Stand
who didn't want to. We need as many Candidates as possible, it's true,
but I will never force someone to Stand. Not ever."
"Good." He smiled at her reaction. "Because I told her I would take
anyone that was tired of her ego trip."
"How politic of you, N'vanik." A grin twitched at her lips. "And how did
she respond to that?"
"She said of they really wanted to go, she would arrange
transportation." He snorted.
Shards, what a woman. Traelyn shook her head. "I wouldn't be surprised
if some of River Bluff's Weyrfolk did decide to transfer here."
"I hope they do. I wonder if she'd let them take their families."
"How could she not?"
"I wouldn't put it past her. It would be quite an ultimatum: go and
leave your family behind, or stay and be forced to Stand." To him,
Zharesti was an example of leadership gone wrong. He couldn't
understand dragons' choices sometimes.
Traelyn shook her head. "She can't do that to families."
"She's forcing people to Stand. She might be willing to split up
families." N'vanik sighed. "I'm so sharding glad you're not like
that."
"I'll never be like that."
Sharing the 'Leadership with Trae had disappointed him in some ways,
but at least she didn't make insane demands on the Weyrfolk. "That's
something we can all be thankful for."
