M'galec fingered the riding straps in his hands as he waited for one of the tanners busily working to notice his presence. It was a familiar looking apprentice who finally rose to greet him. "Ah, Candidate Takala. I had forgotten that you were apprenticed."
"Yes, sir, my father's idea. Is there something I can find for you? If you need more help I can get my father." Takala replied. He knew very well that he was only and apprentice and a junior one at that.
"Well, if he's busy I think I can trust you to take a request for me."
"All right sir, what do you need?" he spotted the strap in his hands. "Leather for your harness?" he asked.
"No, this harness is finished," the bronzerider said with a slight frown. Still, how would a _candidate_ know the difference between a finished and half finished strap. He reached into his pocket and pulled out a hide with a drawing on it. "I was wondering if you might have someone who could add a design to it."
Takala flushed slightly, he'd been watching other tanners prep hides for harness hoping to learn something's before the hatching. "I can double check with some of the older tanners. I don't know anyone who dose decretive work, but I'm sure there should be someone."
M'galec raised an eyebrow. Just what were they _teaching_ him? "I should hope so. In the Weyr I came from decorative work was part of tanning, after all." He unrolled the hide he had brought. He pointed to the design flaming dragons. "I want this repeated over the length of the straps. These are to be my riding straps for special occasions."
Takala reached for a hide to write down the order. "I just prep hides right now sir, I haven't been an apprentice for long." he told the bronzerider. "I've seen some wonderful work on leather though."
"That's reassuring," M'galec nodded. "I don't think I will be needing it right away. I would rather they were done well than done quickly."
"I can find someone now for you sir, if you'd like." Takala wanted out of his presence as soon as possible.
"I think that would be helpful."
Takala moved quickly heading for the most senior journeyman, his father. "The weyrlingmaster second is here, he would like someone to put a design on his riding straps." He reported.
The older tanner nodded and left his son in the office. "Takala said you have a request bronzerider?"
M'galec nodded. "Yes. I have this sketch of a pattern I would like stamped into my riding belt here. Do you think anyone here could do it for me?"
"Certainly sir, I can have the work done by next rest day." Talaeren replied.
"So soon?" M'galec asked with an appreciative nod. "Then I will leave these with you then." He set his straps on the counter next to the hide.
"Very well, I'll see you in a sevenday then, have a good day bronzerider." The tanner carried the straps farther back in the work shop to began working on the design.
