Description: N'thal takes care of a little necessary business the morning
after he Impresses.
Location: Dragonsfall Weyr
Date: month 8, day 23 of Turn 5
"This one is for W'narin," N'thal said as he handed a half finished
outfit to fellow weaver journeyman and friend – and sometimes more, it
hadn't really surprised N'thal that the dragon he'd Impressed had been
blue – Arnik. The other man was going to take over N'thal's projects
and customers since he would not have any time to work for a long
time. He was also being nice enough to donate his time this morning to
help the new weyrling to sort through and pack up his quarters so
N'thal wouldn't be away from his sleeping dragon for too long.
"W'narin… brownrider, right?" Arnik made a note on a small slip of
paper and pinned it to the outfit before carefully folding it into a
box of things he was taking to his own quarters. N'thal was giving him
almost all of his work supplies as well as the unfinished work. The
weyrling wouldn't have room for the equipment until he had a weyr of
his own and probably not time for it even then.
N'thal nodded, "Yes, that's him. This one is for Shewla, greenrider."
He handed a dress over. It had just needed some repair done to a seam
and two buttons replaced. "She's due to pick that up probably
tomorrow. I'll send her a note to get it from you."
"Right," another small note pinned to this one and into the box with it as well.
Arnik watched his friend move from the now empty work rack to a shelf
of personal belongings. The weyrling began sorting the things into
three piles. Things to take with him to the barracks, things to pack
up for storage until he had a weyr of his own, and things he was going
to give away or sell. The smallest of those piles was obviously the
one that would be going to the barracks.
Arnik picked up an empty box and began putting things from the storage
pile into it. "So, wasn't it just a few months ago you moved into
these quarters?"
"Yeah, I think so," N'thal answered with a grin. He'd moved into the
bigger, and solitary, quarters from the room he'd shared with two
other apprentices when he'd walked the tables to become a journeyman
about three months ago. He'd barely been here long enough for any dust
to collect and here he was moving again. And not home, like he'd
thought, either.
"At least you're not moving out of the Weyr," Arnik said, surprising
N'thal. "What? You thought I didn't know you were planning on leaving
if this Hatching hadn't worked out? Psh," he waved that thought away.
"You're about as subtle and secretive as a gold flight, my friend."
"I would have said something before I left," N'thal felt a little
guilty now. He hadn't said anything to any of his friends about his
plans to leave the Weyr after this Hatching, not wanting to go into
the whys and wherefores of the decision. But now, after the decision
was moot, it seemed like a bit of a betrayal that he hadn't done so.
Arnik grinned a bit, "I know."
"Not that it matters, I'm going to be too busy to breathe for a
while," N'thal commented with a rueful shake of his head. But the
words were belied by the flash of absolute joy that Arnik caught in
his friend's eyes.
"You're going to be so wrapped up in that pretty blue dragon of yours
that you're going to forget all about your friends, aren't you?" Arnik
asked with a dramatic sigh.
N'thal pretended to consider the suggestion and then nodded solemnly,
"Probably." He laughed when Arnik gave him a playful shove and then
went back to sorting his things. He was glad, more than glad, that
things had worked out the way they had. Oreanth was the joy of his
life from the very moment Impression had been made, barely twenty-four
candlemarks ago, and the Weyr was his home. His friends were here.
He'd been willing to give the Weyr, and those friends, up because he
hadn't wanted to be surrounded by reminders of what he'd missed out
on.
But he was very glad he didn't have to now.
