"Well done," the goldrider told the young man in front of her who was
hovering protectively next to a small blue that was oh so carefully chewing
meaty pieces. "I'm sure that you and Floridanth will both be a credit to
the Weyr once you've graduated."

"Thank you ma'am," he said politely.

That lad hadn't been the only one to impress, it was hard to believe that
she had woken that morning with eggs still on the sands, and in the space of
a few short candlemarks the dragons had begun to hum, then the eggs had
rocked as the candidates gathered. Suddenly it seemed, the first one had
hatched, a bronze it had been which they always said was a good omen. The
bronze had marched, well marched as much as a newly hatched and awkwardly
moving dragonet could, straight to one of the older candidates, one who
looked almost as though it was his last chance.

"Zondranth!" had come the shout, the first of many that day. Now Teseada
was personally greeting the newly Impressed pairs, wishing them well for the
future.

"And you two are?" she said to the next one.

Nenthal - though he supposed his name was N'thal now, wasn't it? -
wasn't really paying attention to the Weyrwoman Second making her way
through the newly Impressed pairs around him. His mind was entirely
absorbed in the little blue dragon who was taking piece after piece of
meat from him. **Don't go so fast, Oreanth,** he admonished gently.

The blue dragonet made an effort to slow down, though he complained
that he might starve if he didn't hurry. While N'thal continued to
feed his new lifemate, his mind wandered a bit. When he'd awoken this
morning, he hadn't had any idea that he'd be an entirely different
person before the morning was even over.

This clutch had been his last shot at becoming a dragonrider and, with
failure after failure, he'd basically given up on the idea. Standing
had become a habit for him, something he expected to do, but he'd
already started making plans for what to do after this clutch hatched
and his time as a candidate ended. Well, it ended alright. Just not in
the failure he'd expected.

The moment of Impression had come as a shock. He'd been standing in a
clump of boys, most of them younger than him by several turns, when a
nearby egg had started to rock. The other boys had eagerly crowded
around the egg, and he'd moved forward too, of course. But he hadn't
any expectations.

When he thought back on it, he was pretty sure he was feeling a sort
of wistful longing bordering on nostalgia when the first crack split
the shell. This would be his last hatching. He'd never be here, in
this moment, again. That thought had sparked a desire so fierce it had
startled him. He wanted the dragon inside that egg. He wanted it more
than anything ever.

Then, when the egg had split into three separate parts, revealing a
slimy blue body, he'd thought it was the most beautiful thing he'd
ever seen, because he'd never see the like of it again after today.
When the hatching was over and he went home, after all these turns,
he'd never see another dragon if he could help it.

}:Why not?:{ The voice in his head shocked him still, he didn't even
breathe.

The little blue was staring him in the face, his eyes whirling and one
wing flicking to try to get a piece of shell that was stuck to it off
and the voice, Oreanth's voice asked again, }:Why won't you see more
dragons? Is it because you will always be looking at me?:{

And at that moment, the young man named Nenthal ceased to exist and
N'thal, rider of blue Oreanth was born.

}:You are not feeding me fast enough, N'thal. I will am going to
perish soon, I think.:{ His dragon recalled him to the present with
the hyperbolic request for more meat just as the Weyrwoman came to
stand before him.

She asked who they were and he replied with a dazzling smile, "Oreanth
and N'thal, ma'am."

J'darin stood off to the side with a group of weyrlings, male and
female. One of the young dragonets was having trouble standing
upright and J'darin leaned to the young man who'd Impressed the
lovely green, Ilistranth, and said quietly, "Watch her lad, her talons
came a bit close. T'nas right? You'll do fine, hmm?" A kind smile
followed and the Weyrlingmaster turned to the next pair, a solid
looking brown and his chosen. "Kystal, yes? Now K'stal?" The newly
Impressed rider smiled foolishly, causing J'darin to laugh, and
nodded. "And this is Duranith!" the young man offered, beaming, if
anything, wider than ever.

**So proud!** He sent to Hasaarth, his mind fuzzy with the memory of
his own proud Impression.

M'shan, former journeyman tanner Meyshan, was very conscious about the fact
that his robe was too small, the dragon next to him was loundly demending
more meat, his back hurt after being slapped by his brother and niece and
cousin and various other relatives, he smelled like tannery since he came
straight from hall and had no time to bath and he was supposed to meet the
weyrwoman.

The day had started like any other day, and he had been working when dragon
rider came to pick him up. The eggs were hatching. He had arrived to the
weyr in nick of time, given robe that was tight around his shoulders and
marched to the Sands among the others. Juth had been among the first ten
eggs to crack.

"Meyshan, isn't it?" Teseada said as she moved onto the next pair. There was
something familiar about him, and Teseada was sure that she recognised him
as he'd stood beside her a few times before she had found Onnyth.

"It's M'shan now," the young man grinned. "Did you go to same harper classes
with my niece Shaene?"

"I did," she said. "Congratulations M'shan, that's a good looking lifemate
you've found yourself."

J'darin smiled at M'shan as he passed the newly Impressed pair, and
then helped another young pair, this one a young woman and her petite
green, Yrraith, toward Teseada. The Weyrlingmaster had spoken to
Teseada many times of course, and he offered her a broad smile as he
introduced the next pair to her. She seemed to be holding up well,
but then, he remembered, this was her second Hatching? Second or
Third? "This is Mysana and Yrraith."

"Congratulations Greenrider, she's a beauty."

The young woman smiled shyly - she was very shy, which was J'darin had
brought her - and stepped back out of the way to allow another pair to
come near to the Weyrwoman Second.

J'darin smiled after her but stayed near Teseada for a moment as
another pair came toward her. He was watching them all, this first
group that would be 'his' to train. He wasn't aware but the look in
his eyes was almost as if Hasaarth had sired them, proud and eager to
see them grow. }:We will train them well.:{ His bronze's voice
floated to him, though the bronze himself wasn't visible.
Comforting, as always. He was watching E'naer too, taking an odd bit
of comfort from such an experienced 'Third.

"They feel like yours, don't they, goldrider?" He said quietly to the
young woman, as another newly Impressed struggled toward them with his
young brown lifemate.

"They do, and Onnyth is so proud of them right now. All she wants is for
them to grow up and do their best for Pern."

The first group of dragonettes had now eaten themselves full. E'naer
approached. "Congratulations, Teseada," he had been very busy, helping the
new pairs. "I'll take the first group to the Weyrling Barracks, sir," he
addressed J'darin.

M'shan realized he was tangling a piece of meat in front of Juth's snout,
and the little brown was just sniffing it. "Got enough?" he asked.

}: I might be able to swallow it down, but...:{ his mind-tone was doubtful.
M'shan felt that it was the most amazing thing in whole Impression, the
Juth's presence and mind inside his mind.

"Thank you E'naer." Teseada gave the man a smile, "I'm sure you'll teach
them as well as you taught me."

"Always doing my best," the greerider was on cheerful mood.

M'shan dropped the meat back into the bucket and handed it to the
weyrling next to him. "Here, you can have this, mine's finally done."

J'darin smiled in response to E'naer's remark, nodding in agreement.
"Indeed you do, E'naer. My thanks. I'll be along with the second
group in about half a candlemark or so."

E'naer just nodded and started to collected the pairs that had finished
eating. M'shan and Juth fell in line after the Weyrlingmaster's Third, ready
to start their new life.
