D'ale strode down the corridor toward the candidate barracks intending to
find his son Kendale. But when he got there he found quite a few people
milling around but no Kendale. He hadn't had a chance to tell him that he
was back though he was fairly sure he might have heard by now.
He turned toward a young man nearby. "Do you know Kendale?" he asked.
"Any idea where he might be?"
"Kendale..." the small boy mused. Who was Kendale? He wracked his brain,
trying to place the name. As he had found one reason or another to skip
most classes and to sleep away from the barracks, he just couldn't
remember if he had ever met the boy. He glanced up at the man, hoping there would be some family resemblance.
"Yes" he said, "probably about my height with dark hair. He's my son"
D'ale said with a small smile. "Do you know him?"
"Is he older?" The boys close to 20 turns seemed to have formed their
own group. Glancing about, he didn't spot anyone that might be that age.
"Does he have a craft?"
He kept his warmest smile on the boy who seemed a bit timid even though
he was trying to help. "Kendale has just turned 20 and yes, he's a harper
though I'm not quite sure how far he's gone in the craft. He felt a bit
bad about that actually. The time he'd spent at River Bluff had cut him off from to much. He'd actually been quite proud when his son wanted to work on his harpercraft even though he also wanted to be a dragon rider.
"Oh, well then, the harper class is just over there," he said, pointing
to he door down the hall. "But I think your boy may be down at the lake,
helping someone with his dragon. "He did vaugely recall someone looking a
bit like the rider before him talking to one of the older lads about
washing a sick rider's lifemate. Maybe it was him. "Do you know where that's at?"
D'ale had noticed a couple of boys passing them had snickered and
whispered among themselves. He narrowed his eyes and glared, they hurried off at his look. "Sorry about that" he said. "Thank you for your help," then he realized he hadn't even gotten the boys name. "What was your name," he asked.
"It's Galwen. And don't worry about them, we seem to have a lot of high
minded Hold boys who think the bronzes are all there's," he said,
gesturing to the boys who had just passed by. Not really wanting to stay close to them, he added, "here, I'll just take you down by the lake, okay" Not waiting for an answer, he strolled down the hallway. "My da's G'waren, do you know him by chance? He rides a big blue, Manarth. His weyrmate is T'bel." At that he rolled his eyes a bit and continued down the stairs, assuming the older man was following.
He trotted after the boy though he didn't recognize the riders he'd
named. "I've only just come back from River Bluff Weyr" he said. "I've been gone awhile so I don't recognize those names. Which wing are they
in?" he asked.
"U'kaiah's." He glanced back at the tall man and smiled. "You're from
River Buff, eh? I've always wanted to see the ocean. Why would you come back to this place? It's so cold here!"
He smiled at the young man "Really? I'm in U'kiah's I'll know them soon
then." He'd be sure to say something to G'waren. "River Bluff is
certainly warmer, but my son is about to Stand and I wanted to be here. Torerath did love the waves though," he said "I'm sure your father will be proud too when _you_ Stand Galwen."
"Ha!" Galwen laughed. "You don't know my dad! He thinks I'm going to
impress a bronze....so I imagine he's going to be disappointed with me
when I don't."
He stopped in his tracks and put his hand on the boy's shoulder. "One
thing you should know. It is a great honor to be chosen by a dragon, _any_
dragon. Every color has its purpose and the dragons know. They choose." He just shook his head. "The day you Impress will be the happiest one of your life, whatever it is. You will be loved for always so don't worry about the color. If you are lucky enough to gain the attention of a dragonet that won't matter. Your Da will be very proud."
"Oh, I know all that, it's just my da's got his head in the clouds, if
you know what I mean. I suppose all Weyrbred men want their boys to be
bronze riders and their girls on queens, right?" he said with a cheeky grin at D'ale.
He laughed "Oh yes of course, because they're always the best right?" he
liked this kid.
"Not always!"
"Yes but they _think_ they are." He said. It had been that way when he was a candidate too. Even though holders had probably only ever seen a green or a blue, they all assumed they would impress bronze or gold and the
attitudes showed. "Their attitudes will change once they impress." He chuckled "or don't impress at all."
"Hmm." Galwen liked the idea of the Holder boys in his classes not
Impressing. It'd serve them right. "What's your dragon?"
He chuckled at the thought of one of the boys in his class who had been
left on the sands his assurance completely deflated. He had met the most
wonderful brown dragon on all of Pern that day. "Brown," he said
"Torerath is brown, he's one of the best thread fighters around." }:Yes I am mine.:{ agreed Torerath. Absolute pride and happiness showed in the way he spoke of his lifemate. He looked at his shoulder quickly realizing that he wasn't wearing his knot. He hadn't made his new one in the short time since he'd transferred back. He still had the old one for Dragon Fall but couldn't use it at the moment since he was no longer Wingsecond.
"Ah," Galwen mused. "Browns are lovely." Of all the dragons, browns and
blues seemed to have the most even personalities.
"Here we are!" he announced to D'ale, leading him to the large tunnel
that opened to the winter bathing quarters.
D'ale looked through the opening and spotted his son. He turned smiling
back to the young man who'd guided him here. "Thank you Galwen," he said "It's been a pleasure." Then he turned toward the group near the water.
"Kendale!" he called.
