Celebrating new lives

Writers: Roxanne
Date Posted: 12th October 2010

Characters: Jyramikah
Description: Ikoladith's clutch hatches.
Location: Dolphin Cove Weyr
Date: month 10, day 27 of Turn 5
Notes: Mentioned/NPCs: Jyrakon, H'lek

The day was nice and warm. It looked like it would be any day now that
the eggs would hatch. Jyramikah stretched and rolled her shoulders
trying to get the knot out of them after several candlemarks of report
reading. She needed a walk in the sun to loosen her muscles and she
could check on the eggs on her way out. She heard the humming of the
dragons as Ikoladith informed her that it was time. **I'll be right
there. Let me change into something nicer.** she replied abandoning
her plan for a walk.

The eggs had begun to move just a tiny bit, but the dragons knew. They
began their humming and the Weyr sprung into action. Riders were
dispatched to bring in family members and other important guests that
hadn't already made it to the Weyr. Candidates and weyrfolk alike were
scrambling to finish what they were doing so that they wouldn't miss
the hatching. The meat was cut and ready for the hatchlings in buckets
to the side of the cavern.

Ikoladith was watching diligently as everyone began to take their
seats. Her children were ready to make their appearances whether or
not the Weyr was ready to greet them. }:Your hatchling is on the Sands
today?:{ she inquired as she caught sight of the ungangly young boy
who was always a good eyeridge scratcher.

Jyramikah had changed and was sitting next to H'lek, the rider whose
dragon had won the flight. It was going to be an exciting day. **Yes,
he is going to be on the Sands today.** she replied. She waved to her
son when she caught his eye. He looked so grown up standing there
among the other candidates who wanted to find their lifemate in the
clutch.

All around her, there were bets being placed on what color would be
the first to break its shell or how many bronzes would there be. She
didn't know nor did she care as long as all thirty five of the eggs
produced a live hatchling. Suddenly, the murmur of the crowd died down
as the eggs began to rock violently and cracks appeared jaggedly down
the sides of some eggs.

A tiny brown wingtip appeared as the first hatchling broke free of its
shell. He stumbled on a piece of shell, but quickly uprighted himself.
The brown knew who he wanted and made a wobbly line towards a small
brown haired boy. The boy was stunned, but soon called out the
dragon's name joyfully. He was herded off towards the meat and the
frenzy of dragonets hatching began.

Jyramiakah split her attention between the eggs and her son as she
didn't want to miss it if he did indeed impress from this clutch. He
was just barely of the age to stand, but it was all he could talk
about for turns. A pretty little green Impressed a surprised young man
at the same time as a young bronze found his lifemate. Three more
greens and a blue were being led off the Sands when Ikoladith said,
}:You missed it. J'rakon impressed a blue.:{

Sure enough, when Jyramikah turned her head in the firection her gold
had indicated, there was her son leading a beautiful young blue
dragonet off of the Sands. She was elated for him and the rest of the
candidates that were finding their lifemates today. The unhatched eggs
had dwindled to a group of three. The remaining candidates were
circling the eggs waiting impatiently for them to hatch. As if on cue,
the three eggs all hatched revealing a brown and two greens. The
brown wavered for a moment as if he didn't know which way to go, but
finally headed towards one of the older candidates who had decided not
to stand after this hatching if he failed to Impress. The greens had
both found their lifemates and the hatching had come to an end.

Now it was time to console those who had yet to find a lifemate before
she could go congratulate her son on his Impression. She sometimes
felt at a loss at what to say to the disappointed young men and women
who had tried so hard to find a lifemate. She stepped down into the
Sands and made her way over to the small knot of candidates.

"There will always be another hatching, you can try again." she told
them echoing the words that she had heard other goldriders tell the
candidates left behind. The festivities to come would help some of
them ease their hurts and others would find solace in a loved one.

}:I am going to go eat and then sun myself.:{ Ikoladith announced as
she ambled outside into the sunshine.

**Enjoy, you did well my love.** she replied as she sent the
candidates off to change with instructions to assist the kitchens in
preparations for the feast that was to come. She smiled and nodded at
the excited families who were gathered near the new weyrlings. It was
time to celebrate the new lives.
