Description: Galwen and Kendale wash a blue weyrling and talk about professions
Location: Dragonsfall Weyr
Date: month 11, day 16 of Turn 5
Kendale was washing another dragon and while he wasn't that thrilled
with the task, he had to as a Candidate. He would much rather be with
the glass smiths learning to blow glass. He'd begun thinking that if
he didn't impress he could really enjoy a career as a glass
smith. His mind wandered a bit as he applied the foamy sand to the
healthy blue hide.
"Pern to Kendale, what_are_you thinking so hard about?" Galwen smiled
happily over at the older boy. Hemerth was one from Onnyth's latest
Hatching and a tiny blue at that. Which to the young man's thinking
meant that he would be through the bathing fairly quickly. Oh, to be
finished early for once! The next dragon he and Kendale had to wash
was also a young weryling, a green at that, so she should be even
quicker to clean. And then he could run to see if Cardella still
wanted to go looking for herbs.
"Haha, very funny punk." he laughed at the smaller boy. "I don't know
really, I mean... what if I don't Impress. You've got some time yet
but I'll age out soon." he lathered the blue hide in front of him. "I
was thinking of glass work if you want to know."
"Glass work, really?" Galwen said from under the blue's wing. He was happy
to note it was only just longer than he was tall. "I thought...ugh...
lay_off_Hemerth! I thought you wanted to be a Harper. At least that's
what your da thought." He gave the blue an annoyed
flick with his brush. This one was more than a bit lazy and liked to
'lean' his wings and feet lightly on whoever was washing them. Not enough
to crush the small lad, but just enough to maintan more body contact than
was comfortable.
"Yeah well he hasn't been around much, now has he?" there was more
than a touch of bitterness in his tone. "I went smith and he never
bothered to check on me. Sooo...." he pushed the dragon's tail away
from his shoulder. "You seriously can't stand on your
own?"
"Oh shards!" The blue had shifted his weight from Kendale to the much
smaller boy. "Get off me, you lazy git! Can you believe this beast
will actually fight Thread one day?" A couple of smart taps got Hemerth to stop
leaning on the lad and to stand on his own for a few moments. "So you
want to be a Glass Smith?"
"I think so" he said. "I certainly didn't get my fathers voice." he
laughed. "I don't know really. Was just thinking about it."
"Well, why not? It'd be good to have a craft, even if you do Impress.
I would love to go into one but I'm no good at anything but washing
dishes and dragons." Hemerth shifted his weight again. "And I'm no
good at that," he added, grunting a bit as the blue leaned against
him. "I'd better get my own dragon soon. This washing others is getting old."
Kendale laughed the kid really did have a sense of humor. Too bad
those holder bullies couldn't see past the ends of the noses they held
so high in the air to appreciate the personality Galwen had a plenty.
"Oh, guess I was just daydreaming really. I do want to
Impress more than anything. Yeah washing others _is_ getting old."
"You, lad!" Galwen tapped the blue's shoulder. "Yes, you, we're tired
of your lazy ways." The blue looked less than impressed. Turning
back to Kendale, he continued, "well, it's fine to daydream, but if
you're serious, why not go for it? Shards knows, you'd be in high
demand if you're any good at it. Watch out, he's shifting your way!"
"Oh by the egg!" he said as the blue's wing touched on his head.
"Alright I'm telling yours that you are too lazy to be believed!" he
shook his head and blew air out between his lips as he pushed the wing
off his head. "Faranth! Don't give me a blue like this guy!"
"Please! Have you ever met his rider?" The small lad jumped out of
the way as Hemerth shifted his way and then sat down. "Oh, thank
Faranth, couldn't you have just been a nice boy and done that
earlier?" The blue lolled his head and eyed Galwen. "Oh dear, I
think that may have been a dirty look."
"Can't say that I have" he replied with a chuckle. "Maybe that's a good thing?"
"A very good thing," Galwen said with a nod. "Like they say, like
rider like dragon...or something like that." Eyeing Kendale closer,
he added, "so is blue your colour? Or are you thinking something
else?"
"I don't know that I really have a preference actually. My da's is
brown and one of the best thread fighters around." Secretly Kendale
longed for bronze but then didn't every boy? He just couldn't bring
himself to say it out loud like it might put a jinx on his chances. He
wasn't like the holder boys who seemed to think bronze was the only
color worth having and bragged night and day about their futures.
"Every color is powerful in their own way. Even lazybones here."
"Yeah, I'm sure he's a great snorer." Galwen reached out and caressed the
blue's headknobs to take the sting out of any of the boys' words. But
Kendale had confirmed something in his mind. He hadn't said anything
about blue or green. "Have you Stood before?"
"I haven't actually Stood, but I've watched plenty of times." To think
those little awkward stumbling babies would grow up into a powerful
flaming guardian of Pern. "Yeah, I've watched from the stands." his
eyes glowed a little. "Have you Stood yet?" he asked.
"No, not yet. My foster mother was very good at keeping me as close
to her as possible. It's only after she and my da had a 'talk' that
she stopped being so uptight about it all. But_now_it's my da that's
so uptight. It's a sad day when my only ally is T'bel." Taking a
rag, he carefully washed the blue's face, taking care to not get soap
in his eyes. "I can't even say I've seen many Hatchings. Usually,
I've been buried deep in the kitchens and by the time I get freed, and
get over there, all the best spots are taken and I'm left with trying
to see under people's elbows and around their heads and all. So I end
up seeing very little. Being short_really_stinks."
Kendale's eyes opened a little wider at the mention of the green
rider. "That _is_ sad. Well count me in for all the good it will do
you." he laughed. Galwen was a good sort, even if some of the other
candidates couldn't see it.
"Maybe I can stand on your shoulders and that way a dragonet may see me!"
Kendale couldn't help himself and broke out laughing. When he finally
controlled himself he said "I'm sure if you are on the sands your
dragonet will go through anyone to get to you. I am not sure I want
one climbing me."
"Can you imagine this lump pushing through anyone to get to his
lifemate?" The boy pointed to the now asleep Hemerth. "Maybe pushing
to get to his wallow. "
Kendale laughed before saying, "don't we have another one to wash?'
