Location: Dragonsfall Weyr
Date: month 9, day 22 of Turn 3
Birigundi was sitting on his bunk, joking around with one of the new candidates when he heard his name being called.
"Birigundi! There's a girl named Nialyn here to see you!" one of the other candidates called from the door.
A chorus of hoots and howls arose from the younger candidates. The older ones just gave him knowing smiles. "All right, all right, I'm coming!"
"Who is it, Biri, you're new lover?" one of the younger boys asked with a taunting grin.
"No, Golian, it's just the mother of my future offspring," Birigundi replied sarcastically as he stood and strode towards the door.
"Hey..." she smiled a little hesitantly once he reached the door. She glanced over his shoulder at the group of boys and young men who were staring at her - but trying not to _look_ like they were staring. Nervously she tucked a lock of hair behind her ear. "Umm...do you have a bit? Nothing's the matter, I just needed to talk..."
"Sure, sure," he nodded. "Uh... This is maybe not a good place. How about we go down to the dining hall? Or up to the plateau?"
"Maybe the plateau? I kind of want to get away from the dining hall for a while, you know?" Nialyn could feel her cheeks flush as some of the whispers of the boys carried over to her. She bit her lower lip and glanced at Birigundi.
"All right, just let me just us a couple jackets." He ducked into the room. She could hear him calling to one of the candidates for their jacket, and after a little bit of muffled grumbling Birigundi reappeared with a jacket in hand for her. "Here you go. It should fit. Whailit is about your size."
"Thanks, Biri," she murmured, slipping her arms in the sleeves.
"This way," he pointed as he guided her towards the stairs. "What's on your mind?"
"Well..." She cleared her throat, wondering what he would think. He'd _said_ he wanted to be involved...but involved meant so much more than just helping take care of and provide for the baby. Well, at least in _her_ mind. Involved also meant making himself known to close relatives...and her mother obviously qualified as a close relative... "I was wondering if I could introduce you to my mother? Sometime?"
Oh shards... Meeting her mother? What would he say? Nice to meet you, I'm the one who impregnated your daughter. Whoops! "Uh, sure. Sure, I can meet your mother."
She drew the hood up over her head as they walked outside, noticing the slight hint in his tone and feeling the need to hide from it. Nialyn couldn't quite look him in the eye as she said quietly, "I know it's...weird..."
"Oh, no, you're right," he said quickly. "I should meet your mother. It's important after all. I mean, we are going to meet eventually, right? Sooner is better than later." Isn't it?
"Yeah... That's what I was thinking..." Some part of her wished that he would put a casual arm around her, or touch her - give her at least _some_ reassurance that she was on the right track about going about this - about _everything_. But she knew that he was probably just as lost as she was - maybe even more so!
But Birigundi was too lost in his own uncertainty to see hers. "So, does she... know?"
"Yeah. She knows." **I didn't want to embarrass you more than you already will be...**
He cringed inwardly. "And, does she hate me?"
Nialyn shook her head. "No...she doesn't hate you." It was hard to tell just what her mother thought when she finally got up enough courage to tell her. But she _could_ tell that her mother hadn't seemed very surprised...which was probably because she _herself_ spent so many nights with different men...why wouldn't her daughter?
"Well, that's good at least." Birigundi hadn't gotten up the nerve to tell _his_ mother yet. He had no idea how she was going react. She probably still thought he was having a relationship with Demalia! Shards, he should tell her, though...
She glanced at him. "I don't think anyone could really...hate you, Biri..." A small hint of a smile whispered across her lips.
"Some people seem to manage," he frowned. "But it's still very nice of you to say."
She shrugged a shoulder. "Well, I meant it..."
He took a deep breath. It was better to get it over with, he had to remind himself. "So when should we meet? With your mother I mean?"
"In a couple days?" "Right. A couple days." He took her hand in his, needing that small reassurance that everything was still all right. Meeting a girls mother... sounded so binding in a way. Shards, how was he going to get through _that_ one without looking like an idiot.
She squeezed it gently, grateful for the touch.
