He had grabbed a seat by the fire in the cavern. His riding leathers were
spread over his legs and the floor. His hand worked quickly with the awl as
he repaired the problem areas. Frowning, he concentrated on the leather,
reattaching the buckle.

"It won't do it by itself," D'nev said. "Or at least I've not yet come
across a buckle that does fix itself onto a belt."

"Oh hey..how's life?" P'nal asked when he saw D'nev's face. He had known the man a long while now and felt comfortable with him, though they weren't best friends or anything.

"Well if you don't count children that are refusing to talk to me... then
life is just fine."

"Oh..what happened now?" Curious, P'nal set down his tools for a moment,
glad to have a distraction.

"Teseada found out about J'nev, he found out about her. They're talking to
each other and neither will talk to me. That's the short version."

"Well that was a bit of a mess, though, wasn't it?" P'nal thought about it.
"Then again, as riders...we have been known to err...play with the Holders
from time to time. So it's not really anything new. She's 19, eventually
she'll make her peace with it." Adolescents were hotheaded and emotional
in P'nal's view.

"She doesn't understand that her mother and I weren't together when I was
with J'nev's mother. And somehow J'nev feels cheated, it's that hold
upbringing of his."

"Oh sure. Holders usually have two parents and all that so that's
understandable. He was probably the only kid without a dad. Then again,
the ones that foster never have their own parents anyway." It sounded very
convoluted to the brownrider who tried to keep his life simple.

"His mother and I, we thought it best for them to believe we had been
married before I impressed, so that she would be able to live freely in the
Hold. They'd see her as still being married, and the children would carry no stigma."

"Very true. And the other marriage had been dissolved anyway....or..."
Unsure about the timing exactly, his brow rose as he thought it out.

"Impression saw to that."

"Eh so basically it's just the kids that have the issue. Like I said,
sometimes things like that are hard on kids. The real problem they have is
that you kept something from them, not about the whole marriage business
and all of that, probably." He put his hands up, offering that piece of
thought.

"Hopefully they'll calm down enough eventually for me to talk to them."

"I think they will. After all, not many actually know who their fathers are. So for them to have one that tries to keep in touch with them..." Family was a good thing. That was the part about being craftbred that he missed.

"I have a feeling it might take a while though. They both got their
stubbornness from me."

"True, in the meantime you have your duties to focus on." He gestured to
his harness in example.

"That we all do," D'nev managed a weak grin.

"So tell me...how do you think I'm doing?" P'nal would accept any criticism
from his wingrider, since he was also his friend. D'nev had been fighting as long as he had.

"I've not heard any muttering or complaints," the bluerider told him.

"That's good to know. Still trying to get a feel for the newer ones that I
didn't really know." He picked up his tools and went back to work, slowly
making progress. "I wonder how long it'll be till we have another mating
flight."

"Probably not too long."

"I wonder if Jodeth would try to chase." If it was a junior queen, the brown just might. P'nal frowned, thinking of Teseada and then shaking the thought from his head.

"You won't know until he tries."

"He's done it a few times in the past, but he doesn't every single time."
His hands almost worked with a mind of their own, having done the task so
many times. He was almost finished with the repair work. "What do you think
of G'nir?"

"He seems okay, and the Weyrwoman seems to like him."

"They seem cordial. Not a..love match I don't think, but that's allright
too." It was rare for the Weyrleaders to be a couple, but when they were it seemed like things were more interesting.

"I'm not sure he's the type to declare eternal love after winning a flight."

"No but sometimes even without that, all they have to do is look at each
other...They can't keep their hands off, you know. Them-they're not." He
shrugged, thinking about some of the other pairs.

"Some have been though."

"Yep. Don't know which is better." He shrugged, packing his tools up since
he had finally finished his repairs.

"Just as long as they can get along for the sake of the Weyr."

"Well D'nev I better get going. Hope things look up for you about that mess. If you need me, you know where to find me." He gave him a clap on the
shoulder before he threw his harness over his shoulder.

D'nev gave him a smile of thanks. "I know where you are," he said.
