Smack!

Solieira brought her wooden spoon down on reaching fingers, turning about to see who was trying to steal a piece of her fresh-baked bread.

It was late in the evening, and she knew young people - be they riders, candidates or weyrbrats - liked to get middle of the night 'snacks' since they knew a lot of the baking got done at that time.

"Izaronin! Little rogue! If you want some bread, just ask me, hmm?
You're a growing boy, and need to eat."

Izaronin cradled his stinging hand to his skinny chest. "I...didn't want to bother you, Ma'am." Really, he didn't. "You're always so busy..." And he was hungry. Again. It seemed like he was always hungry lately. He hung his head, his hair messier than usual- half of it sticking up in hopeless spikes, the rest falling into his eyes.

"I'm sorry, Solieira. I should have asked."

"Sharding right, lad. You know I'll always feed you younglings, hmm?
Especially the ones I've seen grow up." She smiled at him, and pointed at the small table nearby. "Sit. I'll give you a whole loaf, or at least a half of one. And let me comb your hair. Do you even go _to_ a foster-mother?"

He sat down at the table, his stomach rumbling. He blushed, and tried to rake his fingers through his hair. It just made it worse. "Thank you, Ma'am." The bread was always the best when it first came out.

While he ate, Sol went and stood behind him combing his hair with her fingers. "Izaronin, you need to come and see me more often. You need more feeding up. And more combing!" she clicked her tongue again.
"I'll have a word with your foster mother."

"Yes, Ma'am..." It was hopeless, he knew that. So he paid more attention to his bread.

"What's troubling you, lad? You seem to be very far away. Or are you just hungry?" She couldn't manage much more with his hair without a comb and brush, so she returned to her seat across from him.

"Just hungry, Ma'am. And I'm sorry for trying to sneak a piece of bread. And I'm sorry for always causing trouble. And I'm worried that I won't Impress. And that I'll be too much trouble that no dragon would ever want me." It came out in a rush, without him even thinking about it. He reddened when he was done, blushing furiously.

"Oh lad, its fine to be worried about Impressing. The dragons always know, don't they? If you're meant to Impress, you will, and you've turns yet to go standing at Hatchings! And some dragons, as we've seen, love the troublemakers." She grinned at him and patted his hand soothingly. "Even if Headwomans don't like the troublemakers so much."
She winked, laughing. "Now back to bed with you, hmm? And take some extra food, if you like."

"Thank you, Ma'am...for everything." Izaronin sighed in relief. The Headwoman had helped ease some of his fears, and now he was sleepy again. He might just be able to catch some sleep before he had to be up for morning chores and classes.

She packed up some food for him, and gave him a swift one-armed hug.
"Just you remember that when you stand on the sands, you _believe_.
You have to believe in yourself, or the dragons won't believe in you, will they? But they always know, so do not doubt it. You're young yet.
Now, off to bed I say!" She handed him the food packet with a fond smile. "And no trouble for at least a day, hmm?"

Izaronin grinned. "Yes, Ma'am...er..no, ma'am. No more trouble." For today. "Thank you again." He cradled the packet of food carefully.
"You're the best."

"I'm just the Headwoman, lad. Off with you!" She grinned fondly at him and sent him on his way. "Come and see me any time!"

"I will!" And with that, Izaronin darted off to the barracks.
