Some Things Never Change

Writers: Anaria
Date Posted: 30th April 2011

Characters: K'hetah
Description: K'hetah muses about life and friendship.
Location: Dolphin Cove Weyr
Date: month 1, day 21 of Turn 6

K'hetah sat on a rock down by the water, watching as Loeth frolicked
with the dolphins. The past two months had passed in a blur, with a
flurry of activity that left the bronzerider with precious little time
to do much beyond buckle down and ride it out. Ordinarily at this
point in the day, he'd be in search of a Weyrling to take him back up
to his weyr, but he found that he was enjoying the respite from
constant work.

Ever since moving to Dolphin Cove, he had struggled to deal with the
climate. If it wasn't hot enough to bake a man alive, there was a
hurricane coming through. Just this month there had been three, and
one of those had been severe enough to have to ground the dragons and
take cover. K'hetah had needed to move to a temporary weyr, as his
didn't have corridors, and thusly he had been unable to access it.

Nearly two months had passed since the departure of Traelyn, and since
then, he had been pulling double duty. Janani's arrival had certainly
caused a bit of gossip, as the arrival of any new goldrider is wont
to, and only escalated when rumors of Traelyn's mysterious behavior
started going about. He'd needed to take control of some of his more
gossip prone wingriders once people started hearing that she'd done
the unthinkable - tried to get lost /between/. If there was one thing
that
turned even the most hardened bronzerider into a gossiping green, it
was shakeups with the goldriders at the Weyr. Weyrleaders were expected
to change. Senior Weyrwoman, on the other hand... that was something that was
far less likely to end up for grabs. And then there was the matter of
how much shaking up the goldriders could impact which bronze won the
leadership flight.

Fortunately, the bronze that won wasn't Loeth, which was K'hetah's
primary concern regarding the matter. A solid wingleader was something
that K'hetah could boast of being, but he still lacked serious
interest in being Weyrleader.

}:You already get very little time with your friends,:{ Loeth
commented, as he dove down deep into the water, bubbles trailing
behind him.

K'hetah wasn't much one for friends, although there were a few people
that he would at least count as acquaintances. There was one person
that he hadn't seen in a while, and it troubled him. Zelle. He hadn't
seen her short of a few brief moments recently, and he had no idea how
she was doing. He had once suspected that she was addicted to fellis,
but didn't want to be so presumptuous as to actually consult the
healers about it. He made a mental note to try and track her down as
soon as he could find the time.

It wasn't like Zelle to be sparse - at least not in his experience.
She had made it clear to him that she'd had romantic feelings towards
him for a while, and despite his best attempts not to make it clear
that he couldn't reciprocate, she had still pushed onwards. Except
when she was seeing J'darin... but he was long gone now,
Weyrlingmaster at Dragonsfall Weyr, out of sight, and out of mind
insofar as he knew it.

K'hetah mused further on the subject of friends, as things were
settling down a little, and he was having more free time. There were
others at Dolphin Cove that he had passing acquaintanceships with,
including some of the other bronzeriders at the Weyr. Most of his
Wingriders were simply that - Wingriders. He dared not blur the line
between friendship and seniority. It never ended well.

He chided himself mentally as he considered some of the others that he
hadn't seen for a while - or at all. There was Meledei, who he'd
barely said a quick hello here or there to since Elleth graduated
Weyrling training. **I should check in on her. See how Elleth is
progressing. Meledei used to be so concerned about how small she was,
and she should be rising sometime soon," he mused to himself.

After adding that to his mental agenda, it occurred to him that he
still hadn't had a moment to spare and spend much time getting to know the new
Weyrwoman. Sure, she'd spoken to all of the Wingleaders in brief, they
saw each other at the head table from time to
time, when K'hetah actually sat at it, and he passed her in the
corridors on occasion. But it would do him well to try and develop a
working relationship with her. One more thing for the agenda.

K'hetah chuckled to himself, leaning back into a reclined position,
still watching his lifemate's careless antics. It was ironic that in
considering ways to pass the time when he was not working, he had come
up with more work to do. Standing up, he brushed off his trousers, and
fanned himself quickly with his hat. **Ready to go up to the weyr?**
he asked Loeth hopefully.

}:I called Tratorath already. She'll be down to pick you up,:{ came the reply.

K'hetah shook his head in disbelief. Some things would never change.
