"Hey Sh'del. Have a seat," N'vanik told the brownrider.
N'vanik looked tired, the tall rider noted to himself. He
settled down in the chair offered, and resisted the urge to prop his
feet up. As long as he had known the bronze rider, he 'knew' when
things were official and when things were just casual between old
friends. And this being called into the man's office meant that
things were definitely 'official.' "What do you need, N'vanik?"
"I need a Weyrlingmaster Second," he said with a hint of a smile.
"And you want me to go out and grab the first bronze boy I see for the
job?" Sh'del thought he'd make the man work for it.
"No ... actually, I had a brownrider in mind."
"Oh?"
"Even though he likes to play the dimglow sometimes."
Sh'del chuckled at that. "So what are the perks then? You're asking
me to put up with some 40 youngsters with hormones and baby
dragons..there's gotta be a perk or two somewhere." At that he did
prop his feet up on the side of the desk.
N'vanik eyed his feet but didn't say anything about it. Yet. "You
don't have to fly Fall, and you get the satisfaction of knowing I
trust you with Loseth's hatchlings."
Sh'del mock sighed and eyed him. "A bigger weyr, man, do I get a
bigger weyr?" He waggled his feet when he saw the look on his old
mate's face.
N'vanik rolled his eyes. "I'll get you a bigger weyr."
"Thank the bloody shards for that. Loranth and I have been stuck in
some ridiculous thing fit only for the tiniest green since we got here!"
Not to mention it was so high
up on the cliffs that he had to ask his brown every time he wanted
down. "So what's wrong with the current 2nd then?"
"He's transferring up North. Has some family there." And N'vanik was
finally in a position where he didn't have to cling to every rider.
Although a Weyrlingmaster Second was harder to let go of.
"Ah..that's understandable." He had some family up North as well but
never thought he'd be inclined to want to move closer to them.
"You'll have some time to go over the current weyrling class together
before he goes. Maybe you could sit in on a class or two."
"Okay..." Sh'del raced through his head, trying to see if he was
needed anywhere. "I can sit in later today, if he's fine with that.
Loranth just ate a day ago and doesn't need anything."
"He'll be here a few sevendays yet, so there's no need to rush,"
N'vanik said. "Although I'm sure he'd appreciate if you took over his
duties sooner rather than later."
"So what you're really saying is we have time to go for a quick
celebratory drink beforehand?" Sh'del put his feet back on the ground
with a loud stomp and eyed the Weyrleader with a grin. "We've come a
long way from Vista Point, haven't we?"
"I think that's probably the understatement of the turn," N'vanik said
with a laugh. "And, yeah, this calls for a drink. Or two or three."
"Great, what are we waiting for?"
