Meledei knocked upon the door, but waited til she heard the soft call
to enter before actually doing so. She poked her head in and grinned,
then slipped the rest of the way through and closed the door behind
her. "Hey Sh'del." She greeted, crossing over to approach the desk.
"Doing all right?"

The brownrider gave her a sardonic grin and nodded. "Still trying to
settle in, to be honest," he said, sweeping a hand around to indicate
the room with it's shelves of hides and the untidy desk. His green
flit was sprawled across it, sleeping on the records of the candidates
he was trying to look over before she had decided being petted was
more important than getting on with his duties

"I bet." Meledei shook her head at the state of things. What was it
with people and chaos? Men seemed to have the worst trouble with it.
Not _all_ men, but a large majority of the people with this problem
were of the male gender. "Need some help?" Even as she asked, she
slipped over to the desk and picked at some of the records that were
not beneath the green lump.

"What man doesn't?" he teased her, picking up the snoring Trouble and
letting Meledei take the candidates' records from where she had been
laying.

Meledei couldn't help but giggle and plucked the parchment from the
desk. "Is this all the candidates?" She asked, unable to resist
looking at the list. "Hm, I've met most of them. These two must be
knew, their names aren't familiar to me."

He leaned over to look. "Which ones?" Absentmindedly he placed Trouble
back on the desk, still asleep.

"These two." Meledei pointed to the last two names on the list.
"They must have come within the last couple of days. I'll have to
make a point to go and meet them."

"Oh yeah, they're fresh in some...some hold south of us. Brother and
sister, I believe." He ruffled through some more papers, trying to
remember the Hold they were from. He stared at Trouble for a moment
before remembering. "Black Stone...that's it..I think. Black Stone
Hold. Never heard of it before. So you've meet most the kiddies?"
Since this was only his first sevenday he hadn't meet all of them yet,
as he was still getting settled in and learning from the man he was
replacing, who was going into well earned retirement.

"Most of them." Meledei nodded and flicked the parchment in several
places. "I've stood with several of them, actually. I do hope they
Impress." She sighed and shook her head. "Taeshin...he's a handful.
Keep an eye on him."

"Yeah? What's his issue?" He needed all the advice and warnings he could get.

"He's got a problem." Meledei held out the list of candidates to
Sh'del for him to take from her. "Ever since I've impressed he's been
bitter and hostile. Jealous."

"Yeah...got any examples? Anything I can keep an eye out for?" He
hated condemning someone just outright without hearing what exactly he
had done. But he also trusted Meledei's opinion on things, even if
she was young. Particularly on the candidates, as she had Stood with
more than a fair number of them.

"He's just...very hostile. Whenever I talk to him, he snaps at me,
acts as if I've done something to him." Meledei sighed. It wasn't a
good situation and he made her feel like she wanted to hit him over
the head with something hard. "He's that way with anyone he Stood
with who Impressed. He's alienating people." Which wouldn't be good
for a dragonrider.

"Hmm..." He looked closer at the boy's form and saw that he was an
apprentice Dragonhealer. When he had the time he'd go look up the
Masterhealer to see his opinion on the matter. Jealousy wasn't reason
enough to keep someone off the Sands but if he did Impress, he'd be
one to keep a close eye on. Without realising it, he sighed mightily
and handed the sheet back to her. "Anyone else there you think I need
to know about?"

"Vassy's got a temper. She's better about keeping it under control
than she used to be, but she still bears watching." Though to be
honest, Meledei was more worried about Taeshin than she was about
Vassy. "Serefin is a prankster, though his pranks are generally
harmless. The rest don't get up to much more than the normal things.
Of course, I don't know about the ones who've come in since I
Impressed. To be honest, I think Taeshin might be the one to watch.
He has a habit of starting fights. He's started more than one with
me. He can get...rather disrespectful."

Sh'del made a mental note to check the boy out as soon as he could.
The last thing the Weyr needed was a right pain in the arse. Seeing
an opportunity to tease the young goldrider, he said, "so in other
words, he should Impress bronze, is that what you're trying to say?"

"Oh shards I hope not!" Meledei didn't want to have to deal with the
ego that would come from Impressing bronze, not to mention he might
win Elleth's flight! That sent a shudder through her, until she saw
the grin on Sh'del's face. "You're horrible, you know that?"

He gave her an evil chuckle before putting the sheet back down on the
desk. "Why'd you think N'vanik chose me, m'dear?"

"To torture the candidates. I think I'm glad you weren't one of my
weyrlingmasters!" Meledei laughed, for she didn't think any such
thing. The man was nice, truly he was, and she thought he was a good
choice. "I'll count my lucky eggs for that one!"

"Ha! We'll see how you feel when it's Elleth's hatchlings out there!"
Trouble woke up at that and, seeing Meledei, crawled over for a
scratch.

Of course the goldrider was more than happy to oblige, reaching out to
let her fingers get just behind the eyeridges. "Yeah, I might change
my mind then. Maybe." She giggled. "I should probably go get back
to work, and I do want to go see the new candidates. Maybe I'll drop
in on a class."

"Come on, you can escort me to one of them right now," the tall man
said, putting the still begging Trouble on his shoulder.

"I, unfortunately, have something else I must attend to." Meledei
sighed regretfully. "But I'll be sure to get down there soon. Just
try not to scare any of them, okay?"

"What's the fun in that?" The man said over his shoulder as he walked
down the hall to the classrooms.
