Description: The Weyrlings begin learning how to visualize.
Location: Dragonsfall Weyr
Date: month 2, day 1 of Turn 6
K'ale had been waiting for this day. He new it was coming up soon and
when the instructor had announced their subject matter for today he'd
gotten excited. He hadn't slept well while his small hill of a
lifemate slumbered soundly next to him. Imalkyth was already almost
too large for his couch and though he ate less frequently now, he ate
more.
He slid into his seat ready to work hard at getting this concept and
getting it right. His dad had cautioned him not to get too cocky about
it because this was one of the most important abilities Ima possessed
and it would save their lives more than once.
His seat bumped G'wen's slightly. The smaller boy looked up from his
charts of wing formations to smile a greeting at his friend. As much
as he knew he should be worried about visualization and what was to
follow, he was more worried about being one of the team leaders this
sevenday and making sure he kept his troops in line.
J'nor tried to survey the faces of his classmates, without making it
obvious that he was doing so. he knew that he was nervous, but he
wasn't certain if the feeling was shared by his friends.
}:Don't worry so much!:{ Zoranaith chided. }:It'll all be fine. We'll
be able to go wherever we want soon!:{
E'naer waited them to settle down and then put a pile of paper sheets
to go around with drawing equipment. "Everyone, take one paper and
drawing coal and them pass them to next one. Draw a picture of
Dragonsfall Weyr, especially the landmarks and then return the drawing
to me. This is done so that I get some sort of idea of your starting
level," he explained.
That was easy, G'wen thought to himself, quickly sketching out the
plateau with the Smithy, barns and tannery in front, and the lake on
top, with the forest just beyond. Leveling his eyes at E'naer, he
rattled his paper slightly to let him know he was finished, before
going back to the pesky wing formation charts.
Cardella, like many of the others, was nervous. Everything they did
was so new to her and she worried that she would not be able to
complete the tasks laid out for her. When E'naer gave directions, she
took the paper and coal. Staring at the blank page she chewed on her
bottom lip a bit as she started to draw. What came out on the paper
was nothing compared to what she could see in her mind. Her ability to
draw had never been her strong suit. Embarrassed to think that her
drawing might not pass the task, she tried to add more detail but it
just ended up looking more smudged in the process. **Too bad I can't
just show E'naer what I can _see_ in my mind.**
}:Do not worry, mine. I can see your mind.:{ Awenth replied simply
which made Cardella grin. She didn't know what she'd do without her
Awenth.
J'darin watched them critically, leaning back against the wall as he
often did when E'naer was teaching the class. They would both help,
but many times he liked to let his 'Third take the lead. It gave him
some rest, and E'naer seemed to get on better with the younglings than
he did, anyway.
}:They are nervous but their dragons are not. It is interesting. :{
"Settle down, younglings. We aren't jumping /between/ today." He
said aloud, then stood up from the wall and began to walk around,
curious to see how their drawings were coming. **Keep an 'eye' on
their communicating, if you can. I know some of them still have a
bit of way to go to get their full bond and ability to see into each
other's minds. **
If a dragon knew to say 'go teach your grandmother to suck eggs', he
probably would have said that, or something similar. But as it was,
neither J'darin nor his dragon really knew that term, and the silence
from the bronze was eloquent in any case.
He laughed out loud as he walked by one weyrling's drawing, no doubt
giving the boy a fright, though it was because of his dragon, not
because of the drawing.
He finished his walk a bit later and nodded toward E'naer to keep on
going with the class.
K'ale worked on his sketch like the others quickly outlining features
of the Weyr he knew best as if he were standing in the middle of the
bowl looking up at the Star Stones. He flinched when the
Weyrlingmaster laughed but since J'darin didn't seem to be looking at
him directly, went back to his work. It was a bit crooked when he got
done but the star stones seemed about right. He added a few more
details before he handed it in.
Drawing and visualizing were two things that J'nor was good at. As a
former tailor, he often drew up patterns for clothing and tapestries,
so he was quite good at drawing realistic pictures. While his drawing
wasn't quite as vivid as the image in his mind, it was clear enough
that the Weyr was easily recognizable. Once he was satisfied with his
picture, he turned it in before checking to see what Zoranaith was up
to.
"Psst! Car!" S'vin whispered, from his seat beside Cardella's. He
held up his page to let her copy from it, after carefully waiting
until J'darin had gone past.
Cardella looked back at S'vin and gave him a bit of a smile. She
couldn't copy his work, that wasn't her style. She did, however, wish
she had a bit more talent in the art department. She sighed,
"Here," Rama said, shoving a new piece of paper towards her fellow
greenrider with a smile. "Just take your time. I'll help you."
Cardella smiled her thanks to Rama, whom she'd become rather close to
in their months of weyrlinghood. Of all the other greenriders, aside
from G'wen, Rama was one of her closest friends, especially among the
girls. She mouthed a thank you, glanced back at S'vin's drawing for
inspiration once more and then set to work trying to redraw what she
saw in her mind. It still wasn't easy for her, but this time the
picture looked a bit more like what it was supposed to. She breathed a
sigh of relief at knowing she could at least turn this one in without
feeling _too_ embarrassed.
E'naer walked among the drawing weyrlings and peeked over shoulders.
Some either were very bad drawers or would need a lot of work with
their visualizing skills. Looking over G'wen's picture, he said: "Pern
lost a harper in you."
The boy blushed at the compliment. Secretly he would have loved to
have gone to more harper classes, but his father had been insistent
that he stay in the kitchens, out of site. Trying to push that thought
out of his mind--what was done as done, after all--he went back to the
wing formation papers.
J'darin was chuckling again. With both him and E'naer walking around
among the weyrlings, they were no doubt nervous. Of course, it took
both of them to handle 40 younglings. He paused behind Cardella and
nodded. "Much better, lass." He said to her, then went on to the
next.
At the end, he moved back to the front. "While E'naer is checking
the rest of your drawings, those of you who are finished, please start
handing them up. We'll take a look at them, then divide into two
groups, some of you going with E'naer and some with me, to further
practice." He finished talking, then went back to leaning, to wait
for his Third to join him.
Cardella felt relief when she heard J'darin's praise. It hadn't been
easy as drawing was not her skill, but after his encouraging words and
those of her friend Rama, she passed her drawing forward and waited.
After all drawings had been returned, E'naer continued where J'darin
had stopped. "After you've been divided, each one of you creates a
visualization of Dragonsfall weyr and sends it to his or her dragon.
Dragons sends the picture to Eillispeth or Hasaarth, depending on
which group you are. They tell us if the visualization is good or not.
Oh, and you go in alphabetical order, one after one and don't start
before I or J'darin give you a go. Receiving several images at once is
just going to give Eillie a headache." Then he rattled on who belonged
to who's group.
K'ale got up from his seat and moved to J'darin's side of the room to
stand in line with the rest of the group there. He put his hand on
G'vay's shoulder as the bronzerider was just ahead of him. "Piece of
cake right?" The shorter kid smiled over his shoulder and did great
when it was his turn.
K'ale stepped to the front of the line and formed a picture in his
mind of the starstones on the heights trying to include every bit of
detail he could remember. **Ok, send this picture to Hasaarth,** he
said to Imalkyth.
After waving S'vin off, G'wen put down his charts and went over to
E'naer's side. When it came time for his turn, he sent his 'picture'
to Neath, who grumbled but sent it on to Ellispeth.
Cardella went where she was assigned and waited for her turn. She sent
Awenth a very detailed mental image which was passed on as directed.
