Zathris

Zathris glanced over at the young man upon the runner that sat a good
hand shorter than his own. Of course, Mistral was also a good hand
taller than most runners, long legs and sleek lines indicating that he
might do well at the races - and the thought to put him to the test
had crossed Zathris' mind on more than one occasion. He really ought
to look into a trainer.

But for now, the creature was bearing him as his load and they were
making their way, along with an escort, toward the first of the holds
that they would visit on this trek. Other animals were laden with men
as well as supplies. "Doing all right there, Corofel?" The Lord
Holder called to his ward.

"Yes, sir!" Corofel replied cheerfully. He liked riding and the runner
he had been given had a very steady gait and obeyed him easily. He was
also very excited. His own father had never taken him along to tour on
minor holds, considering him too young yet. That just proved your own
parents could be so blind to you sometimes!

Zathris couldn't help but chuckle at the boy's enthusiasm. He was glad
he'd decided to bring the child along, though there were extra guards to
ensure not only Zathris' safety, but Corofel's as well. The man
watched the boy for a moment then turned his gaze back to the road.
"You ride really well. Did you get to ride a lot back at Emerald
Falls?"

"Thank's. Yeah, I did. I had a runner, not exactly of my own, but one I
always rode. He was great, despite being gelding," Corofel chatted
cheerfully. He was bubbling with good mood.

"I see." A shame that the boy didn't have a runner of his own. Of
course, Zathris couldn't justify giving the child one, but perhaps he
could do something similar. "Have you been to the stables at Amber
Hills? We have many fine runners ourselves."

"Yeah, I've been there," Corofel replied. "They almost as good as the
ones in Emerald Falls hold."

"Almost?" Zathris chuckled softly. Of course the lad would have a
particular fondness for his home Hold.

"Yes, no one breeds runners like our master Aivorn. Even your old Lord
Benaroy tried to recruit him to Amber Hills hold," Corofel chattered.

"I see." Zathris knew that Amber Hills had its own specialties - he
wasn't going to begrudge the child his pride. "I will have to take a
look into that. I tell you what, when we get back, you can choose a
runner to be yours while you're here, just on loan. How does that
sound?"

"It sounds great! Thank you!" Corofel said happily.

"Good. Now, we shouldn't be too much longer before we reach the first
hold. We should go over some etiquette." Corofel had probably already
gone over some, but Zathris knew it never hurt to refresh one's memory.

"All right," Corofel sighed. He did know how to behave if he wanted to.
