Sh'del sat down heavily on a bench alongside the bowl, watching the
weyrlings and their lifemates toddle off for the day. Not a bad day,
today, just exhausting. He sighed and rubbed his eyes when a familiar
voice hailed him. Looking up, he spied the familiar face of Azia.
"Heya girl, you done for the day too?"
Laughing, she pulled him to his feet. "Yes, and as a matter of fact,
I'm off to join K'deren on the beach. Wanna come? He promised to
bring beer..." She thought she'd throw in the last as a tease since
if anyone needed a pint, it would be this fella.
"Okay, no need to bully me!" He let her lead him off willingly away
from the bowl and to the shapes of Donneth and Yennith.
"I thought you weren't going to make it," the wingsecond said as he opened a
rather large bottle.
"Please say that's for me," Azia laughed. "The sweep today was so
hot! I can't wait to jump in the ocean."
Sh'del shook his head at the thought of long long sweeps. This was
one big perk of the new job, no more sweepriding.
}:I rather miss it,:{ Loranth piped in, just waking up from a long nap.
**Well get down to the beach and see your friends, I can't help you on
the sweep thing. And if you go and tell Angdelouth I will personally
tan your brown hide!**
"Enjoy," the brownrider told her as he passed the bottle over. "I see you
persuaded him to come and join us," K'deren continued, nodding to Sh'del.
"Good job I have plenty of this stuff."
"Yes, indeed." Sh'del took the one handed him and had a long swallow.
"Those kids'll drive me to drinking yet."
"What have they done now?" Weyrlinghood now wasn't the same as it had been
for them. Now there was more urgency - thread had been a mythical danger
that nobody had ever thought would come back.
"Probably breathing in the same air as him," Azia laughed and jerked
her thumb at Sh'del. "Where's that nutcase of a flit of your's?"
"She's with...ah here they come." Sh'del turned to watch his dark
brown come into land with the others. Trouble gave shrill commands to
all three dragons overhead.
"I bet there's at least one weyrling that's done something you wanted to
laugh over." K'deren said, still not wanting to admit to a sense of relief
that his daughter hadn't impressed.
"More like you mean there's something that every weyrling has done
that makes me laugh, more like." For all his complaining, Sh'del did
get a small grin on his face, thinking of his charges and their
antics.
"So spill the beans then," K'deren sat back with his own bottle of beer,
taking a drink from it.
"Which stories do you want? The 'I can't be on green!' stories or the
'my shite smells of roses' stories from the bronze boys?"
"Lets hear about some of those who were convinced they'd impress green and
got the shock of their lives when a bronze chose them. I bet there are one
or two of those that have happy endings."
"Well_I_heard a funny story," Azia pipped up, giving Sh'del a teasing look.
For his part, he merely raised his eyebrows.
"Yes," she continued. "It involved the Hatching, a wealthy Holder
coming to see his nice little boy and his new brown...and one well
named flit." She glanced at Trouble who was rummaging through
K'deren's basket for the food in it.
"What happened?" K'deren reached out a hand to try and wave the flit away.
"You'll get yours," he told the little creature.
"Well, this one," and Azia reached out to pull Trouble into a cuddle,
"decided that the plate the Holder had looked pretty darn good and
tried to help herself. Of course the Holder's wife screamed and the
poor baby brown went into a bit of a panic and..." She stopped at the
look of remembered embarrassment on Sh'del's face. "Let's just say it
wasn't the greatest first day on the job."
"At least Donneth and I only had my family there. Not some posh holder
family expecting wonders and possible debauchery."
"Yeah, I just had my family as well, and they were living at the
Weyr." Sh'del mused over his happy upbringing.
"I've seen a few holders come here and be more surprised that we actually
can behave ourselves, not sure what they were expecting."
"Well, from the way they treated that River's Buff Weyrwoman, I think
they think we're all whores here." Azia shook her head. "Such a
pretty girl too, I'm glad N'vanik punched that utter arse." Sh'del
nodded in agreement.
"My father thinks a lot of her," K'deren commented. "Says she's doing a good
job."
"I'd say she's doing better than that Zharesti but a trained
flit could have done a better job than her." Azia's eyes flashed,
remembering how the Weyr was under her.
"Not that our own Weyrwoman isn't doing a good job."
"Our Weyrwoman's a cracking one!" Azia nodded at that. She liked
everything there was to like about Janani. "And Meledei's gonna be a
good one some day as well."
"But maybe not here, I could see Janani being set for a good few turns,"
commented K'deren. Goldriders did tend to get transferred around to spread
the bloodlines out, and if there was a need for a new goldrider anywhere.
"No, not unless something happens.." Sh'del began and mentally kicked
himself for even thinking of Janani being injured or worse.
"Faranth willing there won't be another accident like we had." K'deren's
tone showed he was thinking of Vonalie for a moment, and the children that
wouldn't remember their mother.
"Not a chance!" Azia said with a bit more force than she meant to.
"Look at you two! We're supposed to be relaxing, not getting all
maudlin. Now drink up and join me in the ocean!" With that she
stripped down to her swimming suit and ran to join the dragons in the
water.
"Last one in has to do a forfeit!" K'deren's words were a little muffled as
he lifted his tunic over his head and shucked off his sandals.
"Forfeit what?" Sh'del didn't wait to find out as he shed his clothes
as quickly as possible, throwing them all on Trouble.
"Azia can decide." K'deren's shorts were dropped, and he headed to the
water's edge.
