Description: G'wen runs into D'arvn again, this time in more a comfortable setting
Location: Dragonsfall Weyr
Date: month 3, day 1 of Turn 6
That bluerider looked familiar, G'wen mused to himself, as he picked
at the dinner before him. Looking a bit closer he spotted the River's
Buff knots and tried to place him. Beside him, S'vin was wolfing
through the food as fast as he could. All the work they were doing
with drills made for a very hungry boy. Seeing his friend beside him
had stopped, he nudged him. "Come on , little G'weny, you're going to
waste away if you don't start eating a bit more."
The greenrider rolled his eyes at S'vin and looked back down to his
own plate, still mostly uneaten. The usual fare of roast meat and
tubers and gravy just didn't look appealing tonight, for some reason.
Now the pastry that Teseada's mother had made, on the other hand...
"Bully," said D'arvn. "He looks just fine the way he is. If he can
still sling his firestone sacks who are you to say," he added with a
chuckle.
"Hello G'wen," he said with a twinkle in his eye.
"Hello?" G'wen looked perplexed, looking up at the man. He knew that
blond hair, that easy smile, but from where? "I know I know you, but
I just can't place it! " The man had River's Buff knots as well.
Where the bloody shells did he know him from? He looked apologetic
and added, "I'm sorry, I hope you don't think I'm being rude."
S'vin was watching them both, curious.
D'arvn's palm smacked against his chest in mock dismay. "Am I that
forgettable then," he chuckled.
G'wen looked mortified, and then remembered who the man was. "That
bath with that other guy that was a bit leery! Right? Am I right?
You have a weyrmate with beautiful blue eyes, right?"
S'vin, meanwhile, was waving the man down to the spare seat beside
G'wen. This man and G'wen in a bath together, this could get
interesting.
"Yes," D'arvn smiled. "He had beautiful eyes." He slid into the seat
indicated. "I'm glad I'm not completely forgotten then."
"Had? Are his eyes gone then?" G'wen teased. Patting him on the arm,
he added, "you're not forgotten..it was..that was a bit of an unnerving
experience, that pool. I wasn't sure why that guy was interested."
S'vin rolled his eyes from across the table. To D'arvn he explained,
"our lovely little G'wen here is convinced he's the ugliest thing in
the Weyr." He rolled his eyes again at his opinion of that.
"Oh surely not!" D'arvn replied. "U'fouinn's eyes are an indescribable
hue of blue and they sparkle with a great deal of humor and
intelligence." He looked between the two of them. "Do you want me to
go on?" His gaze transferred back to G'wen. "You should not consider
yourself ugly by any stretch."
The dark boy flushed and looked down at his food. "It must be nice,
being U'fouinn," he murmured, "having someone like you to care about
him."
D'arvn looked closely at the young greenrider. **Too bad** he thought.
A nice sweet kid like that should have someone who'd take care of him
but it didn't look like his bluerider friend was more than just a
friend. "Don't you have anyone special or are you more of a free
agent?"
G'wen flushed and shook his head. "Neither. I, well..." How could
he explain that boys like him just didn't get looked at more than
once? Well, this man had eyes, he should be able to note that. It
seemed like from where he sat that everyone, even green and blue
riders, wanted their men to look like the dashing bronze boys. No one
wanted to wake up next to some sorry little thing like him. Someone
the other day in class even muttered that he was weird looking.
U'fouinn probably didn't get these sorts of taunts.
D'arvn could tell the weyrling was uncomfortable with the question so
he switched targets and threw has next question at the young
bluerider. "So S'vin, how long have you two known each other?
"Since I was this big," and S'vin put his arm out at table height,
"and G'wen was this big." And with a cheeky grin he held his hand out
about three inches from the floor.
D'arvn chuckled. "Is he always this rude," he asked G'wen.
G'wen rolled his eyes. "This is him on a nice day."
"Well, with a friend like that, who needs enemies." D'arvin grinned
conspiratorially at the young greenrider.
"Exactly," G'wen mouthed. Changing the subject, he asked, "so are you
spending the night here or are you going home after dinner?"
"Actually," he said starting to yawn. "It's already the middle of the
night for me with the time change. I was at Dreams End most of the
day. I'm just going to be staying the night and go back in the
morning."
"You want to come up and have a drink? Before you go to bed that is,"
G'wen blurted out before going beet red. But if he was not planning
on Neath's Flight becoming a rape, he'd better get some help in bed.
This man wasn't some slime Dragonsfall bluerider type, he was kind and
handsome and easy to talk to...and...and... "I mean..you don't have
to..." He bit his lower lip nervously. Under the table, S'vin gripped
the boy's leg that was shaking in nervousness and gave D'arvn a look
that all but pleaded with the man to say yes.
D'arvn became still. G'wen was a sweet kid and knew he had a weyrmate.
So, he had to know there would be nothing more than some temporary
fun. "Sure," he said and looked directly into the young rider's eyes. "I
think that would be nice." Shy and awkward but that would get better
with a little experience. He didn't want to make it any more difficult
for him than it already was.
G'wen let out the breath he found he was holding. Did D'arvn actually
say yes? His heart was beating so hard he wondered if the other two
could hear it.
Across the table S'vin stood up and nudged the two riders. "Well, if
anything's gonna happen, you two better get a shifty on. D'arvn, you
look as though your upper eyelids are gonna just fall down any moment
now." When G'wen remained sitting, he bodily lifted his friend up.
"Go on, you'll do fine," he whispered in the boy's ear. Standing back
a step, he nudged D'arvn to stand up and waved a hand in G'wen's
direction like he was presenting the boy to him.
"Well let's not get carried away there S'vin." He couldn't help but
feel that the other young bluerider was just a touch pushy when it
came to his friend. "Don't listen to him G'wen," he said. "Just show
me the way and we'll talk a bit. I really am bushed and would rather
not stay in the visiting riders dorm."
"It's this way." G'wen nudged him a bit by grasping his hand and then
dropping it before he could feel him shaking. To blow off some of his
nerves he turned and punched S'vin in the arm.
"Ouch! What was that for?" S'vin rubbed the spot and glared at the
lad. "You're really getting violent, you know."
G'wen rolled his eyes at that and led D'arvn out of the Dinning Hall.
He may not be a beauty like a U'fouinn, but he likewise, wasn't going
to be another victim greenrider either.
He'd make sure of that.
