Benani

"Now, try and behave, you," Dalina muttered to her younger sister as
she walked up to the Lady's room and knocked politely on the door.
Looking back at the plump Halah, who was ladened down with a tray
full of food, he whispered, "listen to me!"

"Come in!" called Benani. She was beginning to feel hungry and figured
it was about lunch time.

"Yes, Lady!" Dalina opened the door after visually giving her sister
one more warning. Stepping back, she allowed Halah to walk through
and put the tray down on the small table close to Lady Benani.

The chubby girl bobbed after handing the woman a hand towel for her
lap, and stepped back so her taller, prettier sister could talk to
Benani. She really didn't know why Dalina had her skirts in such a
twist, after what had happened this morning. All Halah had done was
take a few 'extras' from the kitchen, just enough to get her through
her tiring day. Today, after all, was washing day, and left the best
of them exhausted. But then again, Dalina fancied herself a future
Headwoman so what better way to start than boss her youngest sibling
about?

Halah sighed at that and looked to Benani, who was everything she
wasn't-- a Lady; beautiful and willowy; and elegant. The young girl
fidgeted with her hair tied into a bun and wondered if she needed
anything more.

"And who is this Dalina?" asked the Lady Holder. Benani was very
careful to use peoples names and made the effort to know them all.
She didn't miss a bit of family resemblance between the two young
women.

Daline resisted rolling her eyes. "This is my kid sister Halah. She's
helping me out before getting on with the washing." The tone she used
told volumes about Halah's disobedience. The girl in question did her
best to look as guiltless as possible.

"Welcome Halah," she said warmly leaning around the drudge to see her
sister hiding behind her. She smoothed the towel in her lap. "This
looks lovely Dalina. Thank you, and thank the cook."

"It is," Halah said before she could stop herself. Daline glared and
turned to apologize to the Lady.

"Don't you worry, Lady Benani, she's a bit on the cheeky side but
we'll get her in line, never you worry." Oh yes, Halah wouldn't do
this again!

Benani who hadn't always been Lady Holder and been the tag along
younger sister for most of her life stifled a chuckle at Dalina's put
down. "It's fine Dalina," she said. Then leaned to look at the other
girl again. "Halah? Why don't you go close the curtains in my sleeping
chamber. I'll be taking a nap after lunch."

"That would be no problem." As she went to do that she shot her
sister a look that said, 'see I can do this.'

"Alright," she said to Dalina. "Let's see what we have shall we?"

The older girl leaned down and took the cover off the food, presenting
lovely meal the head cook had been fussing over all morning, from the
meaty stew and crusty bread, fresh out of the oven just for Lady
Benani, to the redfruit tart, delicately golden on the edges. There
was even a glass jar full of blueberry cordial, and a few lady's
fingers to go with the drink, for later in the day.

"This looks lovely," she smiled. "Please tell cook I appreciate her
efforts?" Benani inhaled the aroma in appreciation before she dipped
her spoon into the savory stew.

"We will," Dalina replied. "Is there anything more that you need before we go?"

Benani lifted the spoon to her mouth and savored the flavor. "No,"
she said. "thank you girls. You can come back later for the dishes."
