Characters: Eilomar, Merlish
Description: Eilomar and Merlish are looking at cots...
Location: Harper Hall
Date: month 3, day 12 of Turn 6

"This looks like a nice one," Eilomar said. They were inspecting the
family cots around the rebuilt harper hall. One of them would be their
home. He peeked in to rooms. The current one was spacious, it had
several bedrooms, a living room, airy kitchen and little shaded porch.

This one had some promise, Merlish decided as she walked around the
living area. Much better than that last one, for sure! She was pretty
sure she had seen tunnel snake droppings throughout the cot, and the
west facing windows with no shade offered just would not do in this
climate! "I like the light in this room," she agreed. The natural
light would make doing things like the mending much easier, for sure!

"Do you think we need all those bedrooms?" Eilomar asked. "Although, I
could use one as a work office," he thought.

His question shocked her. After all the nights she had laid beneath
him, did he really think it was for nothing?! "But... of course we will
need them. For when we have children!"

"Oh, yes, that one," Eilomar replied with slight nervousness. What if
they did have children? He had grandchildren already, how could he deal
with
little ones under his feet? Wasn't he too old for that?

He seemed so... obtuse! "You _want_ children, don't you?" she asked,
feeling her bottom lip curl slightly into the start of a pout.

"Of course I do," Eilomar assured her quickly.

She took a deep breath, calming herself. "It just... It sounded for a
moment like you didn't..." And the thought was quite upsetting! He had
made her a woman, but until she was a mother, what good was it all?

"Now, now, I didn't mean that. I just wasn't thinking," Eilomar said.

Merlish nodded, acknowledging his words, but her look was very clear.
She wanted to be a mother and _soon_ and he better not forget again any
time soon if he didn't want a weeping wife. "I'll look at the kitchen."

"You do that, sweetheart," Eilomar said, happy now that they had averted
a scene.

It wasn't hard to find. She liked the placing of the windows. Lots of
sunlight. She could definitely work in a space like this. "Does this
cot have electricity?" she called back, not sure exactly where her
husband had disappeared to.

"They all have, thank's to the power plant at the falls," Eilomar called
back, his head inside a closet he was inspecting. He liked the size of
it. It was spacious and he did have plenty of clothes.

That would certainly make life easier. In her home Hold, electricity
was available, but not in all the cots. Nodding her satisfaction, she
decided to find where Eilomar had gone. "Would this be our room, then?"
she asked, stepping across the threshold.

"Yes, it's the largest one of bedrooms," Eilomar said, closing the
closet doors. "The one next to this one look's like a baby's room. Have
you seen it? It has little dragons painted on the wall."

Merlish rewarded him with a smile. Now he was talking like a man
looking forward to having a family! "No! Will you show it to me?" she
asked, curling her fingers around his elbow.

"Isn't it cute?" he said, opening the door to a small bedroom. It was
obviously a child's room.

"Oh, I love it!" she grinned, squeezing his arm with excitement. Of
course, she'd want to repaint it. Dragons were nice and all, but this
was a Harper Hall. Music was a much more appropriate theme. And
dragons were not appropriate for a little girl. But all that could be
done later. She just wanted to encourage his interest in children for
the moment.

"I got the feeling that this is the right one," Eilomar said.

"Hmmmm..." she hummed, already picturing just how she would arrange the
room. A rocking chair would be perfect just right in that corner
between the two windows. The bassinet could go there. "We're not
bringing the furniture from the Weyr, are we?"

"No, it's not worth the pay and the rooms Weyr provided came with the
furniture. We just had to get new ones from local crafters."

"You mean _completely_ new?" she asked, cocking her head questioningly.
Could she really have a say on every piece? The possibility was
thrilling!

"I'm a master harper, I don't do second-hand. We should have this place
furnished the way it suits my rank," Eilomar replied with a snort.

"But, can you afford it? To furnish an entire Cot of this size with
_new_ pieces?" She had left all the money matters to him since she had
been raised that talking about such things was rude. But she was
curious. Just how much did he have?!

"I haven't spent much after my divorce from Ailewyn," Eilomar replied.
Of course, the wedding had been expensive but well worth of it. "We may
not be able to buy everything at _once_, but we can afford the best."

Merlish was so happy she stood on tiptoe to give him a kiss on the
check. "Then husband, let's go talk to some woodcrafters today! We
must get our essential orders in before everyone else or we'll have to
wait in line." Everyone would be wanting new furniture to go with their
new living quarters after all.

"All right," Eilomar agreed with deep chuckle. She was so cute when she
was excited and happy.

"Oh, and the Weavers, too! We'll need drapes and bedsheets, light
blankets. Oh, and a potter for dishes..." Her excitement was only
building as she continued to think of all the wonderful new things they
would be buying for their new home! "What color do you think is best
for the living area?"

"I have no idea. I leave it up to you. Sounds like you're going to be
busy," Eilomar said. "There is only one thing I want: a big, softly padded
lazy chair."

"We'll have matching ones next to the fireplace. How about that?" She
had already made plans for a large soft chair with a table next to it.
It would be the perfect place in the winter to do her reading and
sewing. "And a long sofa to match as well." One she could stretch out
on when her work was done and he was not around to see her in such a
lazy state.

"That sounds nice," Eilomar said with one final look around him. The
place was already starting to feel like home.

Merlish was already painting, decorating, furnishing the rooms in her
mind. "Oh!" she said as almost an after thought, "should we tell
someone that we are moving in here?"

"Yes, the Headwoman," Eilomar replied.

"Probably the bed would be the first piece of furniture we would need,"
Merlish mused aloud as she released his arm and turned back into what
would be their bedroom. "And curtains of course."

"I'm not going to sleep on the floor, that's for sure," Eilomar snorted
at the thought. Yes, bed was high priority.

"Maybe one of those beds with the curtains around it," she said
dreamily, remembering how she had read about those in story books and
had always wondered what it would be like to sleep in one. It just
sounded so luxurious!

"Seems like you have things well in hand," Eilomar said.

She wasn't even hearing him as she did another turn of the room,
dreaming of fabrics and woods and paints, and the sounds of babies
cooing in the next room...
