Description: Meledei's in for a surprise when she comes to see her friend G'wen
Location: Dragonsfall Weyr
Date: month 4, day 21 of Turn 6
Notes: Mentioned: R'ehn, J'darin
Elleth wouldn't be able to travel for too much longer, so Meledei was
going to take advantage of it while she could. One of the things that
had been on her to do list was a visit to a certain greenrider at a
certain Weyr, and the rest day afforded a good opportunity to do so.
She was going to have to convince him to come visit her in the future,
especially when she was Weyrbound, but for now, it was nice to get
out. Meledei had a feeling that she would feel pretty cooped up sooner
than she wanted.
}:Hello!:{ Neath called out in a brassy bugle to the tiny gold. }:We
have company,:{ she told her dozing lifemate. As Elleth circled, she
noted smugly that she was not all that much smaller than the gold.
Elleth asked for permission to land at the ledge and did so once Neath
gave it. The gold crouched down, her glittering as the sun bounced off
of it. Meledei dismounted, but didn't pass through the curtain just
yet. "G'wen?"
A tall boy she had never met before stepped out beside Neath, who was
busy rubbing noses with Elleth. "Are you Meledei?" he asked
courteously, holding out his hand in greeting. "I'm S'vin, G'wen's
best friend from way back when we were tiny. Before you see G'wen can
we talk quickly?"
"Oh, sure." That was unexpected, but Meledei didn't see any harm. She
took the hand, her grip firm. "Is something wrong?"
"Ah yes, sweetie. G'wen's been badly scored." His eyes were filled
with compassion. No one would have thought to tell the gold rider her
friend had been so badly injured and a green weyrling wouldn't have
been news over at Dolphin's Cove anyways.
"Badly?" Meledei hadn't known, and that bothered her. "But...why
didn't anyone tell me? Someone should have sent me a note!" That
irritated her. A friend had been injured - one who had come to her
when _she_ had been injured - and no one bothered to let her know.
"When did it happen? How bad is it?"
S'vin blinked a bit at the questions he was being bombarded with.
They had all been so focused keeping the boy alive that no one had
thought to send any messages anywhere. Swift would have been the
logical choice to have taken one to the girl but he had refused to
leave G'wen's bedside. "Well..." he stalled a bit, thinking of how to
answer her. "Well, yes, it was kind of bad. The score's on his back,
it happened whilst he was leaning over to toss a sack to a girl. But
what made it worse is he just kept going and infection got in from
going /between/ so much. None of us knew he had been injured until
the 'Fall was over. He just collapsed after he got off of Neath." He
shivered a bit, thinking back to that awful moment. "We didn't think
to send you a note as he almost died of the infection...we were too
busy willing him alive, I'm sorry."
Meledei couldn't be mad, but she was rather upset. She ran a hand
through her hair and sighed. "I'm sorry, it's just...unexpected. Can I
see him?" She asked, taking a step forward, then looked back toward the
bowl entrance of the ledge. "I should go to the infirmary."
"Oh no, it's not there, he's here. And yes by all means you can see
him!" S'vin took her by the shoulders and steered her towards the
weyr. "He--and a cup of hot klah for you--are waiting!" He leaned in
close and whispered, "just go easy on him, he's having a bad day, and
he's still not up for a lot of talk."
"I'll try." But Meledei didn't really want to berate him or upset him,
so really, S'vin didn't have to worry. The goldrider moved through the
curtain and called out, "G'wen? It's Meledei."
"Hey," he called from his spot, curled up and buried deep in his
blankets. He had been drifting off when Neath had awoken him with
news that Elleth was here, so he knew she was close by and had tried
to straighten himself up a bit, but had given up.
"How are you feeling?" Meledei eased onto the bed, sitting down on the
edge, making sure she didn't jostle it to cause him any discomfort.
"I'm sorry, I didn't know you were hurt. I would have come sooner if I
had."
"It's okay. I feel horrible. My Weyrlingmaster was just by to yell
at me for this." He
nodded his chin at his left shoulder. He blinked hard to keep himself
from drifting off right there and then and reached out to hold her
hand with his good one. This infection, it just left him so weak and
tired. He must look a sight but he could do nothing about that. At
least Neath had just hunted on her own, so he felt better about that.
S'vin came up behind Meledei and pressed a cup of klah into her hands.
"I'm going to go check on another friend of our's who's been scored
as well. Give my Kadeth a message if you need me to come back, okay?"
He smiled at the lovely girl and straightened G'wen's heavy hair a
bit before leaving.
"Thanks S'vin." Meledei lifted the mug to echo her words, then took a
sip before she turned back to her friend. "So...what happened?"
G'wen groaned and gave her a wry look. "I stupidly kept going after I
got 'scored. And on my first sack run....so embarresing. Neath and I
get some sort of award for being the weyrlings least likely to duck
fast enough." There was more than a hint of his usual cheeky self in
his voice.
"Oh G'wen, you shouldn't have done that!" Meledei admonished her
friend with a shake of her head. "Oh shards, I'm glad you're doing
better, but please don't ever do that again!"
He just rolled his eyes at her. "To be honest, it didn't hurt so I
didn't know just how bad it was. Not until after, that is. The fever
was the worst. I really did just want to die, it was so painful."
"It doesn't matter whether you don't think you're hurt badly, you need
to come in. For that very reason!" Meledei kept her voice gentle, but
truly, his weyrlingmaster should have told him that much! "I'm glad
you're feeling better - you make sure you listen to those healers."
G'wen gave her an exasperated look, as she was now officially number
1,2001 person to chastise him. Or so it felt like. "Have a sweet,
Tes' mum made them." He nodded to the small tray of pasties, wanting
to change the subject. Listening in on Neath's conversation with
Elleth he picked up on something. "So you two had your first Flight?"
Meledei let it drop and reached out to accept the offer of a pasty.
She took a bite, then nodded. "R'enh won. Have you met him?"
"No...he's a bronze rider, I take it?" He gave her a silly grin.
"They tend to not want to hang out with male greenriders, for some
reason." Picking at his pastry, he plucked up the cheek to ask,
"so...what was it like? That's one good thing about this score..Neath
won't be going up anytime soon."
"Yes, a bronzerider." Just not the bronzerider she had expected, if
Meledei was honest with herself. "It was...interesting. I was me
but...I was also Elleth. It's really hard to describe...it was very
intense."
"'You mean I'm going to become Neath?" He rolled his eyes at her and
grinned. "Great, so I'll become horribly bossy and start worshiping
golds. Great, can't wait!"
}:Hey!:{ Neath turned away from Elleth to duck her head in the weyr
and look at the young people. G'wen, in turn, just stuck his tongue
out at her.
"You become her, but you're still you and yet you're partly her. Like
I said, it's hard to describe." Meledei couldn't help but laugh at the
look that the green was given them from around the curtain.
G'wen followed her line of sight. "Yeah, she's the master of dirty
looks, as far as dragons go. Sorry about that." To the green he
added, "Neath! Go show Elleth how to catch one of those big fish you
like so much in the lake!"
"Elleth would enjoy that." Meledei gave her dragon a mental nudge and
the gold encouraged the green to do as her rider suggested. After all,
she'd never really thought about catching fish before. Really. "So
what do the healers say about progress? Any expectations?"
The boy shook his head and laid back a bit, as his energy was running
down. "No, just that the infection is going to be the hardest to get
over, as it got into my blood. I think I won't see a Fall anytime
soon." That thought depressed him a bit, as all he had wanted to do
was fly a Fighting dragon.
"Best to take the time you need to get better completely." Meledei
pointed out. She reached out to pat her friend's leg. "I should
probably let you get rest rather than keeping you up. You need to rest
to heal."
"You sure? You came all the way over here, after all, the least I can
do is offer you some company for lunch." He struggled to keep his
eyes open and be polite.
"It's not like it's that hard to come visit you." Meledei pointed out
with a shake of her head. "And I'll be sure to do so again. You get
some rest, okay?"
"Okay," G'wen murrmered, all but asleep.
