His Future Comes on Wobbly Legs

Writers: April
Date Posted: 31st December 2005

Characters: B'drin
Description: Bayadrin becomes B'drin
Location: River Bluff Weyr
Date: month 9, day 5 of Turn 3

Bayadrin was in the kitchens helping prepare the hatching feast. The hatching was imminent and he wanted to help as much as possible. He had brought his robes with him, in case he hadn't the time to return to barracks. He wasn't sure how long it would take for the hatching to start.

He was elbow deep in flour when the humming started. At first he just stood there. It took him a moment to realize just what was happening. In all his time in the weyr he had never been more frantic then he was then. He quickly changed into his white robes and ran from the kitchens. He was still covered in flour. He made an attempt to dust himself off of the flour. He only managed to make it a little less obvious. Though he still had a smudge across his forehead and a bit on his arms and hands.

He joined the end of the line quickly and was just in time. He sighed nervously as they began to file in. He knew he wouldn't be seeing his family there. He couldn't keep his eyes from wandering the stands. He nearly tripped when he saw his father and brother sitting there. They were as close to the sands as they could be, about midway up. He tried to gauge the look on his fathers face. It wasn't a smile but it wasn't a frown. It looked like worry.

He didn't have time to wonder about it as he turned his attention to the eggs. It didn't take long for them to begin cracking. He watched as the first two hatched and then they all seemed to be cracking. He turned one-way and then another as those around him began to impress.

Baydin was in the stands sitting on the edge of his seat. He really did want his boy to impress. Then maybe he would forget his need to cook and become a man. He hated the fact that a son of his would rather cook like a woman then do something manly like smithing or some such thing. Drinel was just glad to be able to watch. He had never been to a hatching before. The first few times Bayadrin had stood their father had not wished to come. Now he almost seemed to be pushing his Bayadrin to impress, in his need to show everyone that his son was not a woman but a man.

Bayadrin was beginning to lose hope of impressing when he saw an egg of to one side. He moved over to it and watched it closely. As if him being there was the signal it suddenly cracked and a deep brown head peaked out. }:I am Lumyth, and I am hungry:{

Bayadrin's father sighed as he watched his son impress the brown. Now maybe the boy would act like a man. At least it hadn't been a green.

Drinel sighed as he watched his brother impress. Now maybe dad would stop with his anger toward Bayadrin for not walking in his own footsteps. Maybe they could once again become a family. He hated to admit it even to himself, but he had missed his brother terribly. Maybe this would be the beginning of something new for all of them.

"ME?" was the only word to slip from Bayadrin's surprised mouth.

}:Yes mine. I am hungry. Can I eat now?" Lumyth wobbled forward and butted his chosen. Why was he just standing there? }:Don't you like me?:{
**Of course I like you. I'm sorry yes we can go get you food.** Bayadrin smiled as he announced, "His name is Lumyth." He carefully led his wobbly lifemate from the sands and to his first meal. He was walking toward his future and knew nothing would be the same again. He just wasn't sure haw much it would change or what it had in store for him.
