The brownrider walked down the corridor, knowing it was time for his
chat and checkup with T'bel. He hoped things were going along well and
that the man would be coming back when he was able. They could use him
certainly.
To expedite the process, Jodeth obliged. }:Fanth, where is yours?:{
}:He's up with Neath's. That weyr is near the top,:{ She would have
cuddled up with the young green but she wanted to be with her
weyrmate, who had just come in from his sweep ride.
Catching a ride with a weyrling instead of bothering his own dragon, P'nal
stepped out onto the weyr ledge. "Anyone home?"
Neath raised her head in an unmistakable glare as T'bel peeked out
from the weyr proper. "Shh! G'wen's really tired." He stepped out
to join the wingsecond on the ledge with the large green.
"Eh sorry.. Just wanted to come and see how you were doing with everything."
P'nal put his hands in his pockets since it was rather chilly.
"I'm good. Just getting Fanth back up to strength and getting this
child back to health. That Flight took a bit out of him...he's been
pretty flat and tired since." T'bel smiled and patted Neath on the
shoulder. "At least she's looking good, eh?"
"Yeah..I was there." Jodeth hadn't won which was water under the bridge
anyway. "Has W'ser said how long it might be?"
T'bel shook his head and gave P'nal a closer look. "You don't like
this one much, do you?" He jerked his chin in the direction of G'wen,
asleep inside.
"I don't know him personally, but trouble seems to follow him." Not
wanting to really get into that with T'bel, he hoped the greenrider
would answer the question he came to ask.
He might not have wanted to, but T'bel did. "And how's that? Except
for an accident in the first Blooding, which wasn't as bad as that
poor brown weyrling, he's pretty much kept himself to himself."
"Oh what about the incident that got your weyrmate upset, as I recall?"
P'nal hadn't gotten involved in that, but he'd seen the report.
T'bel laughed at that. "Oh please! What drunk weyrling_doesn't_have
something like that happen? It was just G'wen's bad luck that his dad
can be overbearing when it comes to his wellbeing." He raised an
eyebrow at his wingsecond. Surely he couldn't base a young person's
future on a silly thing like that!
"Time will tell what sort of rider he ends up being. Right now he's not my
responsibility, but you are." Of course he'd asked T'bel to watch out for the
boy so hopefully the older greenrider could steer him.
"He'll be soon enough," T'bel warned.
"Maybe not and maybe so. He may very well go into U'kaiah's wing or one
of the others. G'nir makes that decision, not I." It was more than likely, so
P'nal didn't dwell on it.
"Oh, he'll go into G'nir's, I bet you that. And besides, his da's in
U'kaiah's."
P'nal didn't know how long the boy was down. The brownrider had been thinking
himself. "I might be out of a job by then if the Weyrwoman's gold
chooses differently.
We'll cross that bridge if we get there. I just need to know you're okay. And to
know when you think Fanth will be ready to start doing a bit."
"Why would you be out of a job? G'nir'll always need a 'second." Out
of the corner of his eye he saw the curtain shift and the slight
figure of G'wen come out to them.
"I thought I heard voices," he said by way of greeting. When he saw
the Weyleader's wingsecond there he dropped his eyes down. That man
had been one of the ones in his Flight that had looked well pissed off
for being there.
"If she rises and G'nir doesn't win, he may not be a Wingleader any longer if
the next fellow decides to do a bit of reshuffling which some of them like to
do. It's something I have to consider," he shrugged, knowing it was
life in a Weyr.
"Glad to see you looking a bit more healthy greenrider," P'nal acknowledged.
"You never know..." T'bel mused, watching as G'wen stiffened at the
formality of the brownrider and ducked closer to him. Reaching out,
the older greenrider pulled the lad to his side and nodded to P'nal.
Mock whispering, he said, "don't think he likes you so much...something
about you being a troublemaker."
G'wen turned a mortified face to P'nal.
Wishing he could pound T'bel into the ground just then, he kept himself in
check by just thinking about it. "Liking has nothing to do with it. My worry
is that you seem to get yourself into situations that end badly. Hopefully,
it won't become a habit or it could be detrimental to your health and that
of your dragon." And that was his real concern. "You have good teachers
and I would urge you to make the best of them." He put eyes on T'bel.
At that Neath snorted and nuzzled her lifemate. }:Don't listen to
him. You haven't done anything to hurt me.:{ She still hadn't
forgiven P'nal's brown for calling her a little one.
G'wen rubbed her eyeridges and sighed miserably. He should have
stayed asleep. T'bel--his work done--leaned back and enjoyed P'nal's
discomfort.
"Anyway glad to see everyone doing allright. I've got to head back now,
but I'll await your return to duty, T'bel. I've just the spot for you." Smiling
to himself, he flagged down a weyrling and caught a ride.
