Description: Paetri and Marli are introduced to a couple of greenriders
Location: Dragonsfall Weyr
Date: month 6, day 26 of Turn 6
"Are you Paetri?" A soft spoken young man stood before her cot, an
even more tiny girl beside him. Nuzzling the girl's leg was a delicate
little green. The two stood in a way that said they were long term
friends, the way the girl leaned into the one that had spoken. They
both wore warm expressions, waiting for the candidate to speak.
So engrossed in oiling down Marli, Paetri didn't even hear them approach.
Her brow was knitted in concentration as Marli stretched on her lap in
a sprawl. The blue flit looked outrageous as he lay on his back, all
four of his limbs and wings spread out to make a shimmering lap-full.
As she rubbed a spot on his belly, the little flit flopped his head
back to give a burbling croon, his rump wriggling with pleasure.
The sudden, although soft, voice startled her and she gave a gasp
turning quickly. Unfortunately for the blue firelizard, it dislodged
him from his rather comfortable spot on her lap and he went tumbling
onto the cot.
Squawking with displeasure, the blue turned to the pair who had
interrupted his very enjoyable oiling session and scolded them soundly
before pointedly hopping back up on Paetri's lap and plopping his rump
back down.
Paetri glanced down at her flit, red faced, then back up at the two.
"I'm sorry. I didn't hear anyone coming. " Not even looking down at
Marli, who was still loudly complaining, she reached down to clamp
down his jaws with two light fingers to hush him. "I'm Paetri."
She flicked her eyes to the little dragon, then back to the pair,
suddenly worried. "Is something wrong?"
"No, no, nothing wrong." The boy tried not to laugh as the green
dragonet hissed at the flit from behind her lifemate's skirts. He
ignored the green and held out his hand. "I'm G'wen, I've been told to
help you." Even though he had schooled his face into seriousness his
dark eyes still danced with a suppressed giggle fit.
Little Oranth was making as much a racket as the blue. "This is
Catrien, by the way."
"And this mouthy one is Oranth," the tiny weyrling muttered, keening
embarrassed by her green's reaction to the flit. "You'd never think
she seen one." She rolled her eyes.
"Help me with what?" Paetri was clearly confused as to what the pair
was seeking her out for. None really had; most of the people she had
met due to pure coincidence. Letting go of Marli with a warning to be
nice, she rose and lightly took his hand before dropping into a polite
curtsey.
She couldn't help but notice G'wen's amusement and her lips slightly
lifted in response. She glanced at Catrien and inclined her head
towards both she and the little green. "Greetings, Catrien and
Oranth."
Marli immediately leapt to Paetri's shoulder and eyed the green,
giving soft muttering chirrups at the green and then at the other
pair. Paetri spoke softly, her fingers winding in the material of her
skirts. "Excuse Marli, he isn't used to being interrupted. He'll have
to learn more patience."
"That's okay, you're in the Weyr now, no one really cares, as long as
you're not like super superior about being from a Hold, that is."
G'wen nodded at her to follow them out of the barracks. "We have an
injured little green that one of the staff thought would be right up
your alley. Her rider needs help caring for her. You okay with that?"
He glanced at her closely, to see her reaction. Catrien fell into step
with them as her green still grumbled at the flit.
Following them on light steps, Paetri frowned. Why would she feel
superior because of that? She felt completely the opposite, actually.
She was more behind because of being from a hold than feeling better
than anyone else. She walked behind G'wen and Catrien, tilting her
head as she listened, then lit up with interest. "I'd be happy to
help. What does she need?"
Marli, though instructed to be polite, still glared down at the little
green and pointedly preened at his now shiny and oiled wings. With a
sniff of pique, he turned and presented Oranth with his rump and a
flicking tail as he settled on Paetri's shoulder with a loud huff. He
then looked over his shoulder, stuck out his little tongue and gave a
loud sputtering "pbbbbbbtttttttttttt."
"Marli!"
Oranth squealed at that. No runt thing like that was going to insult
her! "Oranth! Stop it now!" Catrien was beyond mortified. Her green
had never acted like that before! Beside her G'wen tried hard not to
laugh, turning a lovely shade of purple.
Catrien was not the only one mortified; Paetri's face turned bright
red as she spluttered and caught Marli's little jaw in her fingers.
"Marli!
You should be ashamed! Get your blue self back to our cot, this
instant! That's RUDE!"
Marli immediately ducked his head, eyes rapidly whirling with
distressed yellows. He creeled and nudged Paetri, then with a look at
her face, hung his head, and hopped off of her shoulder, disappearing
with a faint pop.
Paetri turned to Catrien and G'wen, wringing her hands and looking
contrite. "I am so sorry. He is normally very well behaved..." She
looked at the little green. "I am sorry Oranth. He should not have
done that."
At that, G'wen bend over laughing, no longer able to control it. "The
look on both your faces!" he giggled, pointing at the girls. Wrapping
an arm around the new girl's shoulders, he added, "don't you worry, he
fits right in. It'll be fine!"
The unexpected touch surprised Paetri; she nearly jumped back but his
laughter stilled her. It took a moment, but his laugh was infectious
and her lips finally quivered into a real smile. Glancing at Catrien
and Oranth, she waited nervously for their own reaction to the rather
embarrasing situation.
The smaller girl rolled her eyes and smacked G'wen on the shoulder.
"Stop sounding like a wherry, you. This poor girl is terrified she's
in trouble." She turned to Paetri. "Don't you worry, he has no more
authority than we do." She smiled but her eyes looked a bit puzzled.
The poor candidate seemed really uncomfortable with them and she
didn't know why.
G'wen rubbed his arm and mock glared at Catrien before eyeing the new
girl closer. "You're safe with us, you know. We're not going to say
anything about your blue fella. Shards, he's better behaved than my
green!"
Petra finally laughed softly, openly relieved, as she ran her braid
through her fingers.
"Thank you, both." She looked at Catrien and Oranth, then back at the
still red-faced G'wen. Her eyes suddenly twinkled with a faint gleam
of mischief. "Maybe I can introduce Marli to your green and he can
test her behavior too."
Remembering herself, she giggled slightly and cleared her throat.
"Ahem...I probably need to go see about that injured green though,
before we all get side-tracked."
"Neath would have that one for lunch," Cat muttered as G'wen waved his
arm for the two girls to continue following him.
