Abrei

Abrei

U'das knocked the Weyrhealer's door before entering. "Hullo, Abrei. I believe I've got appointment with you, my annual check?" Abrei glanced up and smiled. "Yes... have a seat, U'das. Let me just finish this up and pull out your file..."

"So, how are you? I heard you have a break up with R'han, again?" Her smile turned into a frown before he'd finished the sentence. "Yes, as a matter of fact, I did. I decided I'd had enough of bronzeriders who didn't know when to keep quiet."

"Sorry to hear that, you two were cute." Abrei blinked at U'das, wondering if the man was _trying_ to make her lose her temper. "Cute? Is that so?"

U'das decided it was safer to change the subject. She had a reputation AND access to all kind of pointy, sharp objects. "I think you were about to do my check-up?" "I was considering it," Abrei replied warily, moving the work she'd been doing to the side and standing up to find his file. "Have a seat."

"Thank's" U'das took the offered seat and waited for her to continue. Abrei flipped to the last page in the file and started reading the notes as she returned to the desk. "So, is there anything that's been bothering you since you came in last?"

"Well..." U'das sounded uneasy. He wondered if he should mention it, but if he didn't, he just may got into trouble later. "My eyesight, it's not what it used to be. I need plenty of light to read and too much reading makes my head hurt." "It's not uncommon," Abrei replied easily, making a note before looking up at him. "How long have you been noticing it?"

"I'm not sure. I just noticed one night when I was reading that I need more light." Abrei nodded. "How long ago? Within the last few months?" U'das made a uncertain gesture. "Within last half Turn." "That's good. It means it's happening slowly." She made another note and looked up at him. "We're going to want to keep an eye on it, and if you start having any new or more severe symptoms, I want to know at once." She gave U'das her sternest stare. "That doesn't mean a half turn later, bronzerider. Just so we're clear."

"Yes, master. I just hope I don't have to use eyeglasses. That would really spoil my reputation as a bronzerider." Abrei chuckled. "Well, I'm not making any promises yet... but I imagine that the worst case scenario for now would be using them for reading and hidework. I've got a journeywoman who has made this her specialty, so I'll be scheduling you an appointment with her."

"All right," U'das said with resigned tone. There was no fighting back against time and age. "You're behaving suspiciously well," Abrei said as she made a note to remind her to make him an appointment with Branalie. "You're not going to go sneaking around behind my back and disobeying me, are you?"

"Who? Me? And endanger my career? Have you ground me?" U'das said with wide eyed innocence. Abrei gave a rather unladylike snort. "Give those big innocent eyes to someone else, U'das. I'll send an apprentice over once I figure out Branalie's schedule. Promise you're not going to give _her_ a hard time, though. She's not as mean and crochety as I am."

"I'll be nice to her." U'das promised, wondering if she was going to be pretty. "I'm sure you will," Abrei replied dryly. "Just don't be _too_ nice. You bronzeriders sometimes have a problem finding a balance between obnoxious and hopelessly charming."

"That's because we have egos size with our dragons and we firmly believe we here to bed every woman in Pern." U'das managed to keep his face straight. Abrei snorted. "Isn't _that_ the truth." She closed his file and shifted it to the side. "Go pester the rest of the women of the Weyr, U'das. You should have your appointment within a sevenday." "Yes, master" U'das said obediently. He was grateful it was over.
