Nodding to the headwoman as she left, Sarban looked over the supplies
that they had offered to Dragonsfall in trade. A rider had promised to help
for which they were thankful. Everything was packed and marked.
Seeing that, Sarban left the room as he heard the watchdragon bugle.
Neath bugled back and circled high so they could get a better look at
the Hold. They had been here just the other month, right before the
Blooding. G'wen listened in on her thoughts and mused about why he
had agreed to take on more transport duties.
Walking outside into the courtyard to greet their visitors, the steward
put a hand over his eyes to shield them from the sun. It was a green.
She wouldn't be able to take as much as a larger dragon at a time, then.
**Well perhaps, this one doesn't seem too small..**
Neath circled once more before settling before the man who G'wen
figured would be there for them. Of course more than a few lads were
peering out of windows and doors, watching the large green.
"They think you might be here on Search," Sarban said in explanation.
"Welcome to Emerald Falls. We appreciate your assistance." He waited
for the greenrider to come to him, mindful of the dragon.
"Ahh...." G'wen slid down her shoulder and came to stand in front of
the other man, noting the lighter clothes on him. "She's not Search
material, unfortunately." He shifted his feet, a bit shy and
uncomfortable around Holders.
"I'm Sarban, the Steward here. Have you ever been to Emerald Falls?"
He led G'wen towards the Hold's entrance, intending to show him what
needed to go.
"Only once...for the gather." He followed the man into the cool
interior of the Hold.
"Welcome back." He led the greenrider through the Hold until they
reached the place where the supplies had been placed. "This is it
here, all marked. What do you think?"
"You guys expecting a gold or something," the young rider asked before
he realized what he had said and clamped a hand over his mouth,
feeling sheepish. But really, the place was top to tail in goods! He
turned large brown eyes up to the Steward.
"Well, we didn't know what was coming, but this is what we promised."
Sarban knew it was quite a load. "To be honest, if you can't get it all,
that's fine. We'll just see if they can send someone else at another time.
If you need to make multiple trips, though, we will offer you food and
whatever you need." He didn't know what the young man's orders were.
"It's okay, Neath and I can do multiple loads." Realizing he hadn't
introduced himself, he added, "I'm called G'wen, by the way." His
eyes turned back to the load. "Erm..there is one thing though...can
you get some of those boys to bring this out to my green? My arm and
shoulder..." He pointed over his left shoulder. "I was badly injured
two months ago, I can't actually lift much of this..." His voice
trailed off, feeling badly about not being able to actually carry any
of it to Neath.
"Perfectly fine, greenrider. We appreciate your service to Pern." Sarban
nodded to one of the men standing by and it didn't take long to get some
men organized to move everything to the courtyard. "Your injury, it will
heal?" That was Sarban's way of asking if it was permanent.
G'wen nodded. "It is mostly already. It's just a long score down my
back and shoulder but it's more that it got infected from going
/between/ and that's made things a bit...." He shrugged his shoulders
and grimaced a bit.
"Our healer, Master Miranek might have something to help," Sarban
offered before thinking the Weyr's healers would know better about
threadscore. He realized that and gave a sheepish look. "Glad you're
going better."
G'wen just politely nodded at that and then flinched a bit when one
of the workers tied a bundle on too tightly to Neath. The big green
jumped and knocked the load completely off, scattering men and goods
as she went.
Sarban saw it and his lips set into a thin line. Walking over there, he
took the man aside. "Careful!" There were a few other choice words
said before he stepped back.
G'wen followed Sarban and stood at Neath's head, soothing her as the
man was disciplined. All the strange faces and being so very small in
a strange place with no one to be comforted by made his head swim a
bit. He just wanted to be gone from this foreign place.
}:Remember why we're here.:{ Neath said as she leaned her head against
his torso. }:It'll be okay, I won't let anyone hurt you.:{
Once the first load of supplies had been loaded, Sarban invited G'wen to
check everything. "See if the balance is okay or if we need to take some
down?" He knew loading cargo onto a ship was far different from putting
it onto a dragon. Sailing and flying required very different things.
**Neath?** he asked as he walked around her, checking the straps
weren't too tight. When he was done she stood up on her hindlegs and
flapped her wings a bit. Nothing moved. Watching her settle back
down--and noticing the envious eyes of two slender boys hiding in the
shadows of the main door--he said to Sarban, "Everything seems fine,
thank you. Before I go, have any Search dragons been here lately?"
"Dragons from Dolphin Cove come pretty regularly. Elleth has a clutch
on the sands now so I imagine they'll be coming by soon." Sarban remembered
meeting Meledei and a brief smile came to his face. He was considering
attending that hatching.
"Make sure all the boys get searched closely." He wasn't about to
point out the two with the wistful stares but those two looked like
green or blue material, if any did. "If your men could bring the rest
of the supplies out here, Neath and I will make another trip for
them." And bring a bigger dragon to boot, he thought to himself,
wondering where K'ale was.
"I'll see that it happens. How long do you think it'll be till you return?"
Sarban looked up at sun, prepared to judge the time he had to get it
all laid out and ready.
"Half a candlemark?" As he talked, G'wen swung up onto Neath's neck.
"I may try and bring re-enforcements..or two."
}:Or five,:{ Neath added as she eyed the goods coming out. With a
mighty leap, she was airborne and in a wink, she was gone.
