Perfect Acoustics

Location: Harper Hall
Date: month 6, day 9 of Turn 6

Heading over to see how the rest of the construction on the hall was
coming, Sarban looked at the finished part and then headed to see the
unfinished part. Nodding to the foreman, he stayed out of their way as he
wandered through the site.

Eilomar was arguing with the builders about the acoustics. The room was
going to be used for choir practices and he wanted it to have perfect
acoustics.

Hearing the noise, the steward approached to see them in discussion.
Frowning, he coughed as he came forward. "Is there a problem?"

"Yes, he's not listening to me. That wood for wall panels is the wrong kind
of wood. It's too hard, it will create echoes and that just throws the
acoustics out of the window," Eilomar replied.

"What sort of wood do we need?" That was the next logical question, after
all. Sarban gave the other man a look to be quiet for the moment. If there
was one thing he'd learned, it was to listen before trying to fix a
situation.

"It should be unfinished soft wood. Otherwise we had to pad those wall
panels with cloth," Eilomar said, and scowled at the construction worker.

Looking at the foreman, Sarban gave him a plain look. "Can we get enough of
that in a timely manner so things don't have to come to a complete halt?"

"No sir, but we can work on the floor while we wait for the lumber to
come," the other man grudgingly admitted.

"As long as it gets properly done, I don't care how long it takes. I want
an acoustically perfect room for vocal practices," Eilomar said.

Feeling much like a childsitter in that moment, Sarban nodded. "Allright,
that's what we'll do then. Please go make the arrangements." Turning back
to the craftmaster, he was hoping to fix a few ruffled feathers. "Master, I
am so glad you are here to help oversee this thing. If you have any
problems, please don't hesitate to find me."

"You're welcome, Steward...Sarban, was it?" Eilomar wasn't sure who was who
yet. "That's why I'm here. Hallmaster wanted a senior master to supervise
things in this end. He counts on me," Eilomar explained, his chest rising
with pride. He was obviously very impressed by his own importance.

"Aye Sarban. I trust you know where my office is then?" he smiled, watching
the Master Harper and thinking about how he'd have to see him in future.
"I'm sure he sent the right man."

"Of course I do. I was born in his hold, you know," Eilomar replied with a
flicker of his hand.

"Were you? No I didn't know that. Do you still have family here then?" **Oh
this is good, very good.** Sarban wondered just how many of the harpers had
been raised here. That was something he needed to research probably.

"My sister and her family. Her husband has a hold up river, called Black
Rock hold," Eilomar replied. Which reminded him, he and Merlish should
probably visit them or invite them to visit after they had gotten their cot
ready.

"Hmmmm well how about that? Welcome home then. Has everything else been
fine so far?" He sincerely hoped the Master didn't have anything else to
complain about or his wife for that matter.

"Yes, it has been," Eilomar replied with a satisfied nod.

"Good. I'm sure Corowal wouldn't mind if I invited the both of you to join
all of us at dinner some evening." Hold and Hall relations was always a
good thing to be fostering, wasn't it?

"That would be grand," Eilomar said with a nod.

"Wonderful. I'll let you get back to work. I've got an appointment I have
to keep, but it was good speaking with you." He nodded to the Master and to
the foreman, ready to head back to the Hold.

"Likewise, Steward Sarban," Eilomar replied.
