Description: Jykri cottons on to the ways of the Weyr and makes a new friend
Location: Dragonsfall Weyr
Date: month 6, day 15 of Turn 6
Jykri couldn't help it. He stopped in the middle of the Dining Cavern
and just stared at the two men kissing, his mouth hanging open. He'd
heard the Weyr was different, but seeing it was something else!
Almost beside him, a much smaller lad snorted at the look on his face
and said, "I take it you're from a Hold?"
He blinked and turned at the sound of the voice. "Um ... yes."
"And..let me guess, you're gonna Impress bronze, right?" The young
greeenrider crossed his arms in annoyance.
"Not unless I've been told wrong about the kind of boys they pick."
Jykri saw the rider's expression and it started to sink in. He looked
between the rider and the two men, who were no longer kissing but
looked like they might go back to it any second. "Oh, you think that I
-- Oh, no ... I mean, I think it's _wonderful_!" He broke into a
smile.
At that, the other boy rolled his eyes and grinned. "My name's G'wen,
come over here." He tugged on the taller lad's hand and nodded to a
table that had a few green and blue riders sitting at it. "Sorry, I
thought you were the 1,000,000 and one Holder boy prejudiced against what
they see at the Weyr."
"I'm Jykri." He slid into a seat. "I've been told my whole life things
like that were wrong and unnatural, but they _can't_ be if Weyrfolk do
it." He glanced at G'wen's knots. "You're a greenrider. When your
green chose you, she knew who you were, she's inside your head ... a
dragon wouldn't pick someone _unnatural_. So they must be wrong."
"Of course they're wrong. Look at the way they treat women, let alone
the gay men. If it was wrong, than why does it work so well up North
and here in the Weyrs? Makes me wonder sometimes that if they think
we're all so perverted then why don't they just strike out on their
own and fight their own Threadfalls? Why do we have to die to protect
them and their ignorant ways?" G'wen nodded his head at that train of
thought. It was tiring, the line of prejudice that dripped out of the
Holds.
Jykri frowned. "Most of them don't know any better. I'm lucky I'm
smart enough to figure things out on my own, or I'd be just as
ignorant." His parents were, although they weren't particularly mean
about it.
"Yeah, so...are you gay then?" G'wen gave him a quizzical look.
The Candidate shook his head. "I like girls, too."
"Ah..." G'wen nodded his head sagely. "Future blue rider then?"
"Hopefully, but it's all up to the dragons."
"How do you like it here then?" As he talked, the tiny rider pored
the new lad a cup of klah from the kettle on the table and pushed the
basket of rolls towards him.
"Seems nice so far, although I already miss my sisters." He took the
cup with a nod of thanks.
"Well, if you Impress I'm sure you can see them when you like." As he
talked, G'wen checked Jykri out. He wasn't really his type--and a bit
young besides--but he was cute.
"That would be nice." Jykri smiled, imagining coming home on his own
dragon. "Did you move here? Or are you weyrbred?" There were so many
people to meet, it was overwhelming and thrilling at the same time.
"Weyr, born and bred. My da's a bluerider and his weyrmate is on
green, like me." He grinned, thinking of the latest stunt T'bel had
gotten himself in.
"So both your parents are dragonriders?" Jykri wondered what that
would be like, growing up around dragons and with both your parents as
riders.
"Oh no, T'bel's not my ma." He giggled at the thought. "I don't know
who my mother is, to be honest. My foster mother raised me, and my
da. T'bel's more a recent thing." At that he shrugged his shoulders.
"Oh ..." Jykri didn't quite know what to say. How could he not know
who his mother was?
"You okay? You've gone all pensive, y'know."
"Just thinking." Jykri decided to change the subject since he wasn't
sure if it would bother G'wen to talk about his mother. "Since you
know this place so well, would you mind showing me around a little? I
mean, when you're not busy."
"I'd love to!"
