Enjoying some of Dolphin Cove's refreshments, Rhosyn had finally
gotten away from the crowd for a moment. Nodding to a craftmaster, she
put a glass of wine to her lips when she saw one of her boys that
she'd been keeping an eye out for. "Got the new ones bedded down?"
"Just about..." Sh'del looked exhausted as he glanced at her and
smiled. "Please say you have a glass for me as well, or did you just
plan on tormenting me by drinking in front of this poor overworked
Weyrlingmaster?" He didn't bother putting the '2nd' in there.
"I'll do you one better." She handed him a complete wineskin and a
plate of cheese, meat, bread, and a few pasties. Looking around for
an empty table in a corner, she gestured to it with her eyes, thinking
he'd want to sit and eat.
"N'vanik's a lucky man." Sh'del went to the table where she indicated
and all but collapsed into a chair, which made a distinctly loud
protest at his bulk. He poured a glass and downed most of it in one
gulp.
Rhosyn quietly watched him, letting him wait till he was ready to speak.
She understood how tiresome it could be to have to deal with the younglings
all the time. They had so much energy, it was surely a challenge just to
keep up.
After rubbing his eyes he glanced up at her and grinned. "This job is
driving me to drink."
"Are you okay or are you just joking?" Her eyes searched his, trying to find
out the truth of the words. If he was really having problems, she would try
to offer help if she could.
He looked over at her before laughing. "I'm joking, silly girl." Just for
good measure, he wooled her head.
"Hmmm that's good then." Grabbing a small muffin for herself from a passing
tray, she began to pick off small pieces, eating it slowly. "I'm glad
you're happy though I will admit that I hate all of you being here. It gets a
little lonely sometimes."
"Yeah I know." He reached over and gave her a half hug around the
shoulders. "You can always come over and visit, you know."
"Sometimes. Can't be here as much as I want of course. I have things at my
own Weyr to take care of. Plus I don't want to utterly anger Janani to the
point where she ignores N'vanik like Traelyn did. That would break him." Rhosyn
would never do that to him. He would hate her for it and she'd blame herself.
"True." He looked thoughtful as his mind wandered over to his own
Weyrwoman. Thinking to change the subject, he asked, "so what do you
think of our junior gold? She did well, didn't she?"
"Quite well. Then again, there was also a good, proven sire." She couldn't
help but be proud of R'enh. Elleth had made a good choice in that, which
spoke to the gold's intelligence. "The eggs will do a lot of good and the
bronzes will certainly help fill things out further."
Something just occurred to Sh'del just then. Smacking his palm on his
forehead, he muttered, "oh no! Bronze Weyrlings! Great, that's just
great...three snotty boys lording over all the others, just what I need."
"They might not be snotty. Not all of them are, you know. Besides, you could
use them to keep the others in line. Leadership training I think it's called. I
recall them trying to use me in such a fashion, though I think it backfired."
That caused a small smile and a laugh though it had only been the rider who
hadn't been useful. Orlaith had done her best to get her class together.
"Nah," Sh'del shook his head, "I rather like using the greenriders as
team leaders, to be honest. Particularly the kids from Holds. That
way the girls learn that it's okay to be strong and in control and
the boys start to re-condition all that self hate from growing up the
way they do. And the troublemakers too." He grinned, thinking of one
troublemaker who had turned himself around. "We had two really ornery
ones that have made great team leaders, a bluerider and a brown.
Both look like future wingseconds or thirds one day."
"Any lucky ladies in the picture yet?" She dangled a piece of cheese before
she put it in her mouth. Rhosyn couldn't help it, she wanted to see him happy.
"Just that one." He nodded to Trouble as the tiny green flit landed
beside Rhosyn and promptly began begging for treats.
"Well that one's not new." Her eyes rested on his before she tossed a scrap
to the green. She wasn't partial to the things, but they were all
around the south.
"No, but she's enough for now. Besides I'm now the babysitter for 32
new dragons." He scooped up the pouting flit and sat her on his lap.
"You should probably get some rest then. Would you like me to tuck you
in?" Her offer could have easily been taken another way, but she genuinely
didn't mind making sure he made it to bed.
He laughed. "I'm not_that_tired yet! How about a dance instead?"
the harpers had just started up a quick set of reels.
"You're on." Popping the last bit from the plate into her mouth, she stood up
and walked beside him to the floor.
