N'vanik

N'vanik

Another new class of Weyrlings, and he couldn't wait much longer. The
current Weyrlingmaster just wasn't up for the job and N'vanik need to
find another one, fast. So he called Sh'del into his office, wondering
if the brownrider would want that much responsibility.

Sh'del's tiny flit flew into the Weyrleader's room, chittering wildly
and landing on his desk when she saw a crumpled piece of paper.
Opening her mouth in glee, she leapt on it and batted it right into
N'vanik's face.

The Weyrleader hoped this wasn't a bad sign. "Behave yourself," he
told the green.

Cheeping mournfully, she flew over to her person as he walked in the
door. "She living up to her name," Sh'del asked his old friend as he
settled into the chair opposite N'vanik.

N'vanik sighed. "Yes. Could you ask her to go somewhere else? I need
to ask you something serious."

"Oh dear, it must be serious." His eyes danced with laughter as he
told Trouble to go find a warm dragon to lay on.

N'vanik was already wondering if this was a bad idea. Then again,
maybe this was the kind of temperament needed to handle the stress.
Faranth knew the serious ones hadn't lasted. "The current
Weyrlingmaster is leaving, so I need to replace him."

"Leaving?! You are taking the piss, aren't you? That one left
already." Sh'del raised an eyebrow at his friend. "A while back."

"I mean really leaving. No more excuses, no more promises. I told him
he had to transfer out." That hadn't been a pleasant conversation.

"Really? How'd that go?" Sh'del leaned forward, amused.

"He tried to argue we still needed him, but he realized I was serious
and accepted it." They weren't desperate for riders anymore.

"Thank Faranth." Sh'del grinned happily, not in the least upset to
see the back of that man. "Who hired him for the job anyways? I
swear he just made it all harder."

"I did. He was fine, at first. I don't know what got into him."
N'vanik had made a mistake in picking him. "Anyway, I wanted to ask
you if you want to take over for him."

"E'ril and I already have, to be honest. That fella and G'len as well
haven't been about at all." He sat back and eyed N'vanik. "Actually,
I'll do it, why not?" He was already doing the job, after all.

"But are you _sure_ you want it? I could put out a request to the
other Weyrs, find someone who'll actually do the job and take the
pressure off you. I don't want you to take it just because you think
you have to." He didn't want another Weyrlingmaster to burn out,
especially not a friend.

"Unless you want a crazy little green flit flying about that fine head
of hair of yours don't ask me again." He grinned to let N'vanik know
he was teasing. "Let's go have a pint and celebrate that old fart
leaving."

N'vanik cracked a smile. "Alright, but no more complaints about me
making you do this. I gave you a way out, and don't you forget it."

"Oh please, I_always_get to complain. I wouldn't be me without being
allowed to complain!" He got up and tugged N'vanik on the shoulder.
"Come on, you can tell me all about Rhosyn and your plans to lure her
to us whilst we drink."

That got a laugh out of him. Same old Sh'del.
