"Hey I'zar your awake?" T'kala hissed after the glows where out.
Dagreth was alseep.
"T'kala?" I'zar rolled over and looked in the dark for his fellow weyrling. Strange to think of themselves as such. He mentally reached out for Zhenireth, who was sleeping soundly. "What's up?" he hissed back.
"I, um, I wanted to ask, did you really think thais was going to happen, I mean impress?"
"Well...I suppose. I had my doubts, I think, but a dragon always knows.
I didn't really want to think about not impressing. Just in case thinking it would make it come true, you know?"
"Yeah, are you the only rider in your family?"
"Nah," I'zar curled his blankets closer about him. "My parents are borh riders. Mother has a green, and father has a brown."
"Really? What was it like? Growing up with dragons?
"Well. It was grand. I always got to help bathe them, and oil their hides. My parents would take me flying now and again. But it was hard.
I saw them more than most weyrbred kids would, I guess, but I had a foster mother now and again when they were too busy fighting thread and drills and all that."
"What did they say whne you impressed Zhenireth?"
"They were happy. I think...they were a little suprised. I know I was.
I mean, I've never been very responsible, you know? Bronze riders are...well, they're natural leaders and stuff." I'zar looked down at his hands, despite the dark. "I'm not."
"But your bronze thinks you are."
I'zar smiled. "Thank you, T'kala. What did your parents say?"
"They we're a little suprised that he's a blue, they did relize that about me. They don't care though. They think he's beautiful. My father nearly cried when I impressed and he's craft breed."
"That's good. I've heard that some people can't accept certain dragon colors, if they're not from the weyr. I've never understood that."
I'zar shrugged. "I'm glad that your parents are happy. It will make everything easier. Training is already going to be hard, without having to worry so much, you know?"
"They've been in the Weyr a long time. I know they both wanted to impress. They are happy to have a dragonrider in the family. I'm not too worried about training, It can't be anyworse than in the tanners hall and Dag is at least greatful."
"Yeah. Training isn't going to be that bad...I mean, it's not like we're going into it alone. We have our dragons!" Zhenireth woke enough to sleepily make sure I'zar was alright, with a gentle reminder to actually go to sleep. They had a long hard day ahead.
"They make everything worth it don't they?"
"Yes, they do."
