G'wen watched the healer's retreating back and blinked his eyes
slowly. E'naer was going to be so upset with him. And his da! He
groaned under his breath and eyed his best friend. "I'm not really
going to have to stay here am I?"
"If that's what the healer says. I won't have you scare me, Onnyth and Neath
like that again," Teseada said scolding G'wen. "Just what on Faranth's eggs
do you think you were doing coming here like that?"
"I didn't know I was ill until I got here." The boy sighed and looked
like he wanted nothing more than to sleep for a long while. "Maybe if
I can get something to eat I'll feel better."
"Well I'm sure the infirmary here can organise that, but you are not going
anywhere until that nice Master Healer says so."
"Tes..." His voice trailed off. He just wasn't up to being scolded.
"I mean it, we're going to stay until they say you can go."
"Tes--"
"Hi! What'd I miss?" The door opened and in walked Daran, looking
flustered.
"He collapsed," Teseada looked up at Daran, allowing worry to show in her
face. "Thank Faranth this place has a good healer who can help him."
"Collapsed?!" Daran looked aghast at G'wen. "Why'd you do that?"
The tiny greenrider rolled his eyes and was about to answer when the
door slammed open once more and in came what seemed to be a posse of
people, though in reality it was only a man, his wife and a woman who
looked a few turns older than Teseada and Daran.
"There he is!" the older woman shouted. "Our little boy! Have you
come to say hello to the family? We saw the green outside, did she
and this nice lady here," she beamed a smile at Teseada, "bring you?
How very kind of you, miss. And come to see one of our ill Holder
boys as well!" She turned her smile to the thoroughly exasperated
G'wen before stopping in her headlong speech to stare closer at him.
"What a minute, I don't think I've ever seen you before..."
"This is G'wen, he's the rider of the green dragon," Teseada said as she
shifted round to see who had spoken, her knots becoming visible. "Master
Miranek was good enough to help him when he fell ill."
"HE'S on the green?!" The woman looked like she smelled something
rotten as she stared hard at G'wen.
"Ma..." Daren pleaded.
Teseada drew herself up, drawing on her training. "Greenriders play an
important part in defending all of us from thread. Without them, many of us
would not be here today." She looked at Daran's mother. "He was hurt
fighting thread."
Daran's father tried to place a hand on his wife's arm, knowing what might
come next.
"Missy, I don't what happened to him," and she sneered at G'wen, "he's a bad
bad boy!"
"Mother, you can't talk like this in front of Onnyth's lifemate!" the other
woman all but shouted, reaching over at the same time to grip her baby
brother's hand.
"Darellen," Hamsen began as he realised what the knots worn by the young
lady meant. "Please, calm down for a moment. This isn't the time or place to
have this discussion."
"Excuse me lady, I don't know who the bloody shards you are but you can
go stuff yourself /between/ for all I care!" Ill or not, G'wen was
thoroughly incensed. He sat up as he shouted at the silly woman.
Outside Neath screamed loudly.
}:Calm down little one,:{ Onnyth said gently to Neath. }:My rider will talk
to this silly person.:{
Teseada laid a hand on G'wen's shoulder. "I think my Weyrwoman would agree
with me when I say that you are no lady, and that you have no right to
address me, or G'wen in that way." She raised her hand to her knots, "I'm
sure harper classes taught you the meaning of these?"
When the woman turned her hard look on Teseada, Daran stepped forward
and pleased, "ma, stop, he is my friend and she's my partner. Please,
you can't talk to them like this." As he spoke tears of shame ran
down his face.
"Your partner?! What do you mean 'your partner'?" The mother looked
like she was about to implode.
The temptation to just blurt out that they were lovers was hard to resist,
but Teseada managed it. Instead she moved to take Daran's hand. "We're
together," she settled for. "Your son, he could soon be the weyrmate of a
goldrider."
The woman looked like she as going to explode. Her face went an ugly
purple colour. Before she could say anything the other woman stepped
up. "Weyrmated? Really?" She moved to wrap her arms around the two
lovers. "Congrats! This is so exciting!"
It was a sudden, and almost smothering embrace. Teseada looked to Daran for
help to extricate herself, she still hadn't finished with the talking to his
mother seemed to need.
Darellen took the moment to take a deep breath and asses the
situation. Her son..with a Weyr female? Gold rider or not, everyone
knew just what those girls got up to in the Weyr. Why, oh why did he
go there in the first place? She knew it was going to come to no good
and now look at him, with a slut for a girlfriend and a man loving
male friend. She took one more hard look at G'wen who was all too pretty
for her liking.
"Yes, it's true," Teseada said after a moment. "Daran and I," she squeezed
her lover's hand. "We haven't talked about it all properly yet, but I love
him," she said to his sister. Then she turned her attention back to his
mother.
"Know this," she began. "A Weyrmating is considered the same as marriage,
and any children born will know two loving parents, no matter what course
their life takes. If one day I were to have a son as brave as G'wen and
riding green I'd be so proud of him. Who a person is is what matters, and
the fact that a dragon chose him means that he is a strong, brave and
intelligent man."
Daran held his breath and looked to his father. The man had never
stood up to his wife before but if ever there was a time when his
children needed him, now was that moment.
"Darellen," Hamsen turned to his wife. "Look at our son, listen to him and
what he is saying. For his sake."
Darellen was trumped. Both Daran's sister and G'wen held their
breaths, waiting to see what would happen next.
"I think that perhaps you owe G'wen and Neath an apology," Teseada said, her
tone indicating she would not take no for an answer. "Not only is he my
friend, he risks his life to keep us all safe. He and Neath could do great
things one day."
Throughly red faced, she did just that. No more, no less, just one
word to both and then she turned heel and walked out of the room.
Daran and his sister just look at one another before he punched the
nearest wall.
"Daran," Teseada said, "I didn't mean to upset your mother like that, but
she was so rude to G'wen, I had to say something."
"I know, I'm not angry at you, I'm just ashamed at the way she acted."
Daran looked down at G'wen who, now that the whole mess was now over
had visably wilted. "I'm truly sorry for this, truly sorry."
"He needs the Masterhealer," Daran's sister said, watching the young
greenrider with concern. Squeezing Teseada's hand, she left the room
to get the healer.
"G'wen, you okay?" Teseada sounded concerned. "Do you want Onnyth to calm
Neath at all?"
"I just need to rest a moment.". He looked up his friend's face and
felt horrible. If only he had listened to his body this never would
have happened. Teseada wouldn't have been stressed like this, Neath
wouldn't be upset and Daran wouldn't have been embarrassed. Why did
everything he do end up in such a muddle? Trying to give Tes a smile
he asked, "you think I could get something to eat?"
"Lets see what the healer says when he gets back to check you over."
G'wen shut his eyes and rested.
