"Nearly done," Chynna told her flits as she began to scrub the final table in the Dinning Hall. Shards, she hated this drudgery work, especially since she had once been allowed the opportunity to be an apprentice and actually utilize the skills that she was born with. It was even more difficult to get work done since Daynar imposed his new Firelizard rules. Haven't to keep her close at hand always seemed to slow Chynna down. Currently they were perched one on each shoulder, making it extremely difficult to scrub properly.
"Chynna," Nyblek whispered as he slid a piece of paper across the desk towards the young woman. "This is for you."
"Thanks Nyblek," Chynna said taking the paper he gave her and grinning happily. Carefully looking around to ensure that no one was in the vicinity she whispered, "I don't know what I would do without you. For months now Nyblek had been sharing his notes with the former apprentice in an attempt to secretly help her keep up with her studies.
"Well, I'm sorry, but I can't get you the chemistry notes yet. Mine just don't much sense." He sighed as he slipped down on the seat next to her as she worked. Since there really wasn't anyone grouchy about, he figured he had time to sit and talk a minute. "I truly can't wrap my brain around chemistry. Still."
"I can help you," Chynna suggested, "chemisty was never my strong point, but I did not do too poorly in it. If you could get your hands on someone else's notes, I am sure that I could help you out. Anyways I owe you."
"Ulte's been helping me a bit. And I had a bit of help from another source..." Nyblek wondered if he should confide in Chynna his dirty little secret. He hadn't told anyone what he had done. Not even Dawyn.
"Ooo, another source," Chynna teased, "Is it someone else who isn't supposed to be learning about chemistry. Don't tell me that I am not the only one you are sneaking notes to."
"Well, actually... I..." Shards, Nyblek had been feeling so guilty over the whole thing, he hadn't told a soul. But part of him knew he could tell Chynna. "Actually, I borrowed my brother-in-laws notes and... old tests."
"Oh, Nyblek you really shouldn't" Chynna said scoldingly, "It won't help you in the long run."
"I know. I'm more lost now than ever," the apprentice said with a frustrated sigh. "But I have the next test too, and that might be the only way I can _pass_ it."
"and what about the test after that?" Chynna asked, "do you have that one too?"
Nyblek nodded, not wanting to meet his friends eye. He was pretty sure he had disappointed her. "I have all of Dawyn's chemistry papers from when he was an apprentice."
Chynna thought for a minute. She didn't want it to offend her friend, afterall he was her only true link back to apprenticehood. Without him she wouldn't have any chanc at keeping up with her studies. Finally she said, "give them to me, Nyblek. I'll look at what's written there and make new questions for you. That way you still get questions to practice with, but you won't be cheating. You don't want to risk getting caught."
"But what good do questions do me, Chynna, if I have no sharding clue how to find the answers?"
"I'll help you with the answers," She assured him. "I am smarter than most people give me credit for. I am sure that I can learn a lot of chemistry from those old tests."
Nyblek sighed. He could at least _try_ it. "All right, but if it doesn't work, I want them back."
"Of course," Chynna said, holding her hand out to seal the deal.
"All right then." Nyblek still wasn't confident it would change anything, but he took her hand anyway. "I'll bring the papers to you."
"Don't worry about a thin Nyblek," Chynna assured him, "I am sure that you will do just fine."
"Well, I'd better try to make sense of the notes then before I make a total fool of myself in front of you." He really wasn't looking forward to her knowing just how _little_ he understood. She was going to have her work cut out for her with him... "I'd better leave you to your womanly duties."
Chynna glared at him for a moment, refusing to the young apprentice with a response. Finally with a sigh she said, " Yes, I guess that I had better get back to work."
