Just in Time

Writers: Len, Paula
Date Posted: 31st May 2012

Characters: E'naer, T'bel, G'wen, G'waren
Description: E'naer's little egg hatches!
Location: Dragonsfall Weyr, Emerald Falls Hold
Date: month 7, day 9 of Turn 6
Notes: No, they didn't not time it, despite E'naer's suspicions.

}:It's time:{

}: Wake up! It's our little one! :{ Eillispeth called her rider.

E'naer struggled to wake up. "What?" he asked groggily.

}: The egg! It hatches. Our little one is coming! :{ Eillie acted like
she had clutched the egg and was very protective of it, despite not
being there.

"What's wrong?" G'wen asked as E'naer's movements woke him. He pushed
his thick hair from his eyes and blinked sleepily.

"Uh, I think my egg's about to hatch," E'naer got up and started to
pull on clothes. He had told G'wen about the egg.
** Where are you?**

}: On the Heights, I'll land in front of the main door:{, Eillie replied.

That was probably going to freak out the Emerald Falls' door guards.
They weren't used to dragons around here.
"Straps, where did I put the straps?" E'naer was frantically searching around.

Sitting up, G'wen pointed to the bare corner of the room. "There."
Blinking a bit more he did notice that they were tangled up in Neath's
straps. Opps.

}:Are you coming? She's almost here,:{ Fanth reached out to
Ellispeth, her own rider's frantic concern colouring her mindvoice.

}: Humans! They take time,:{ Eillispeth replied and growled, landing
in front of the hold's main door. That freaked out the two guards
standing in watch.

}: Hurry up!:{ Eillie reached for her rider. A watch-wher patrolling
the perimeter came to see what was going on and Eillispeth sent it
away with a snarl. The watch-wher was not going to argue with a bad
mooded dragon and decided to keep watch on the opposite side of the
building.

** Coming!** E'naer got the straps untangled, gave G'wen a quick kiss
and ran out.

"Are they coming?" G'waren stopped his pacing for a moment to look at
his weyrmate.

"I think so...I hope so! Fanth! What's going on? SHE'S COMING!"
T'bel hovered over the frantically rocking egg, scrubbing his hands in
worry. On either side sat his bronze and G'waren's green, both
crooning encouragement to the little gold inside. "Stop it, you two!
She can't come yet, she just can't!"

They both were in E'naer's weyr, by the blazing hearth. The bluerider
had run down to the kitchens to get meat for the little one, he was
still out of breath from it. And his own nervousness and T'bel's was
making his stomach turn. Where was E'naer? If his little son
made him miss out on Impressing his own flit, G'waren was going to
have to renege on his decision to butt out of his kid's life.

He glanced over again at his lover, who was making little 'oh oh'
noises and was scrubbing his hands so much G'waren swore he'd rub the
skin right off.

E'naer actually thought about timing it when he ran to Eillispeth. He
knew about only because he was Weyrlingmaster's Third. Sometimes
weyrlings stumbled to it on accident. But he wasn't sure /when/ to
time it and had never done anything like it before. So he rather not
risk it, getting lost in /between/ and told Eillispeth so.

He wasn't sure afterwards if Eillispeth obeyed him or not. With the
time difference between Emerald Falls hold and Dragonsfall Weyr it was
hard to say if the green cut some corners. He just knew that they
/betweened/ before reaching safe height and landed in such a speed
that Eillie nearly crashed into the weyrledge,
frantically yelling }: Out of my way! :{ to Fanth. Had he seen
weyrlings pull a stunt like this, he had ordered them to a sevenday of
barrack cleaning-duty.

E'naer nearly somersaulted out of Eillispeth's back. "The egg? Am I in
time?" he called in and nearly bowled over T'bel and G'waren in his
urgency.

"Yes!" both men yelled just as a long crack appeared in the egg. Not
wasting any time G'waren grabbed E'naer by his tunic and bulled him
right over to the egg. T'bel hastily stuck a glob of meat in the
greenrider's hand.

E'naer snatched the meat and leaned over the egg. The crack widened
slowly, then a muzzle peaked out. Despite being covered with yolk, you
could see it was bright gold. E'naer took a hissing breath in and
concentrated on the Hatchiling. "Come out, little beauty, come out to
me," he did his best to send warm, loving feelings.

The head came out, followed by long neck. Then a wing broke free,
sending shards flying. Next wing was freed from it's prison and rest
of the firelizard tumbled out, creeling hungrily and demandingly. She
straightened herself just when E'near offered her a piece of meat. She
snatched up so fast E'naer almost lost a finger tip to her tiny, sharp
teeth.

T'bel caught his breath and smiled at his partner. Each hatching,
even a little one like this, brought back that beautiful feeling when
tiny Fanth had found him.

Meat bit by bit E'naer lured the tiny queen closer, until she was
firmly wrapped around his arm. Her freeding frenzy eased up and she
slowed down her eating, giving E'naer a change to inspect her. She was a
small one, even for a hatchling, but there was no mistaking the
colour. She was bright gold. She also has three-toed claws, being
from wild firelizard strain.

"Isn't she beautiful?" E'naer murmured with awed voice.
Eillispeth was trying to squeeze her head in to see her too.

Fanth and Manarth were also joseling to see the new one. "She's so
tiny!" T'bel peered over E'naer's shoulder to look at her.

The tiny gold hissed at T'bel.

"She's a little savage," E'naer remarked. Her sharps claws managed to
pierce the thick hide of his flight jacket and he winced.

"She'll have to deal with Neath so that's no bad thing." T'bel rolled
his eyes at his opinion of the large green, as he gently led E'naer
over to a sturdy chair. Beside him G'waren placed what was left of
the meat on the table beside.

E'naer somehow managed to shrugg off most of his outer clothing,
expect the jacket, which was left to hang just one of his arm in a
sleeve. The arm she was curled around to. Her belly was bulging and
she yawned.

"Now, what to call her?" E'naer puzzled and stroked. She purred contently.

"That, my friend, is up to you." G'waren smiled and directed T'bel to
the door. "We'll bring some food up for you."

"Thank's!" E'naer called after them. The little flit in his lap showed
her content, blue eyes before closing her lids and relaxing into a
limp, trusting bundle on his arm. E'naer was totally smitten.

"Wonder how long it'll take Neath to either try and steal or eat it?"
T'bel murmured to his lover as they walked down the hall. G'waren's
only response was to shake his head.
