Description: J'darin checks in on one of his workers
Location: Dragonsfall Weyr
Date: month 8, day 5 of Turn 6
Notes: Mentioned: E'naer
J'darin had heard - of course - of G'wen's unintended stay at Emerald
Falls. He had decided to let E'naer handle it, and the Healers. If
he knew anything at all, he knew the Healers would have given G'wen an
earful even an aggravated Weyrlingmaster could not top.
But, G'wen had come back to work a few days ago, and he wanted to see
how he was getting on being back to work.
He would wait for the Healers word, but he wondered if G'wen would be
content to stay in the Weyrling's wing forever, or if he'd want to go
to a Fighting wing.
With that in mind, he sent to Hasaarth, who was looking over some rope
drills going on below.
**Dear one, can you ask Neath to have her rider present himself before
dinner in my office? I just want to check on him. **
He shrugged into his warm furred jacket and went down and out to where
the weyrlings were drilling, and joined the other instructors while he
waited for an answer.
As the green relayed the message to her frail rider, he jumped
slightly as he was rather a bit more engrossed in a conversation with
Catrien, and both weren't paying as much attention on the drills as
they should have. **I'll just go and tell him okay now** he told
Neath. Rolling his eyes at the blond girl, he turned away from her
and walked down the line to the Weyrlingmaster. "Sir? You wanted to
talk to me?"
The prompt response from G'wen surprised him, he would have thought the
lad engrossed in drills and classes. But if he had time now, then so
did J'darin.
Drawing him a bit away so they could get a little out of the cold's
direct path, he appraised his young assistant curiously for a moment.
He seemed okay, and the Healers would have said something to him if he
was not fit for duty, but still, it never hurt to check.
"Thank you for your prompt response, G'wen." He smiled in greeting.
"So, had a relapse, eh? I imagine the healers blistered your ears for
you, so I won't do that... again." A quirk of his lips referenced the
last time J'darin had 'given him a talking to' while the lad lay in
bed.
"I just wanted to see if you were settling back into work alright? Any
problems, troubles?"
The small lad shook his head. "Yes, a relapse. Too much transport
duty. The healers have banned us from anymore for a long while." He
really felt badly over the loss of extra marks but he had set out to
get enough to buy a special present for someone and he did now have
enough to get it. Only now he was still not allowed to go /between/
yet.
Smiling at J'darin, he added, "it's nice to be back at work, sir.
Being bed bound again was a right bore!" Kicking at a piece of ice on
the ground he shyly asked, "how long did it take you to be 100% again?
I'm so tired of being thought of as this delicate frail thing."
Caught slightly offguard by the question, he was quiet for a moment
trying to recall a time in his life that was, mostly, very fuzzy. He
had been devastated by more than his wound, losing the Weyrleadership
as he had, and it was still a bit ... unsettling to think of how he
had dealt with the injury. Not entirely well, to be honest.
"We were in the infirmary for 3 sevendays, light duty and a ground
level weyr for 5 or 6 more, and then left with just a scar to show for
our troubles. Still, I was flying again normally and with no leftover
pain or weakness something near 2 months, and a little more, after we
were Scored."
He considered his scar objectively. It was ugly and visible on his
right arm, and it was the same on his right leg.
He smiled slightly and teased the young greenrider. "But we did not
fly Thread after we were hurt. We went to the Weyr. " he coughed a
little. "Well, we _couldn't_ . We fell out of the sky to the Weyr,
anyway. " They could not have flown, despite Hasaarth's strong wish
to continue. They had fallen and hit the ground hard.
"I also listened to the Healers and followed their instructions
exactly, but I had no E'naer to care for me." He winked.
G'wen blushed slightly at that and smiled. Yes, having a lover like
E'naer was wonderful. "It's been four months now since it happened.
Why do I still feel so terrible?"
J'darin considered that and wondered what to say. He was no Healer,
but even he knew that Scores healed generally well enough when cared
for appropriately. He was living proof of that, after all. And so
was Hasaarth. And the boy's score had not been as severe as his own,
but from what the Healers said, it was the infection, not the Score
that had made G'wen so ill.
Considering that, and other's he had known with the same type of
problem, he said, "Well, I'm no Healer, lad, but other riders I've
known with infections of the type you had can take several months,
maybe a turn, to recover completely. But if you've been cleared for
light duty such as working with the Weyrlings, you're getting better!
Don't give up, but do keep listening to the Healers. And let me know
if you feel as if the work is too much, right? While I fully support
pushing yourself to heal, you don't want to have another relapse that
may delay your full recovery even more. So work but let me know how
you're doing from time to time?"
J'darin would not ask E'naer, other than in purely a technical sense.
He felt that might be crossing a line.
He still felt odd about E'naer and G'wen, since technically, E'naer
was G'wen's superior, and was not sure he fully supported their
relationship while G'wen was in their Wing. But, personally, he
approved of happy Wingmates, especially his overworked 'Third, so he
smiled and wished them well.
And he did mean it.
