Getting to Know You....

Writers: Devin, Miriah
Date Posted: 3rd August 2012

Characters: Paetri, J'kri
Description: Paetri and Jykri get to know each other
Location: Dragonsfall Weyr
Date: month 9, day 3 of Turn 6

Jykri tried to balance his meal tray and two books and bumped into the
girl in front of him. He managed not to spill anything, but just
barely. "Sorry!"

"Oh!" Paetri jumped just a little and turned, her cup of klah
splashing on her hand. She winced, then quickly transferred the cup to
her other hand, rubbing the slightly burned one on her side. "It's
okay..."

She stopped and then glanced at his burden. "Uhm...do you need any help?"

"I'm fine." Jykri got his tray precariously balanced on top of the
books. As long as he carried it just so, he wouldn't drop anything.
Probably.

"Let me...." Paetri carefully picked up his tray and set her cup on
it, balancing it before shifting to carry it with both hands. "I don't
mind." She gave a little smile. She would have felt badly if the boy
had dropped his food. "Where are you sitting?"

"Thank you." He smiled. "Anywhere is fine. We can sit together, if
you don't have other plans."

Paetri blinked. That was a first; she normally ate alone. In truth,
she really wasn't hungry. She had just wanted a cup of klah, but she
didn't see any harm in it. Hadn't she only been thinking not long ago
how lonely it could be by herself?

She gave a slight smile, a mere upturning of her lips. "You're
welcome. I don't guess I do. I'm done with chores for the day."
Glancing around, she found an empty bench and led them towards it.
Laying down his tray, she sat down, unsure of what to say next.

"I'm Jykri. I've seen you in class and around the barracks. I
should've said hello before now." He set his books down and slid the
plate closer.

"I'm Paetri." She glanced around and then back to the young man
beside her. "It's okay. I've not said hello either." She looked at the
books, not able to help her curiosity. "What are those for?"

"This one's on dragon anatomy, and this is a book on wiring."

Her curiosity only heightened especially when Jykri mentioned dragon
anatomy. Her brows rose and not able to help herself, she leaned over
to get a better look. "Where did you get it?"

"I got it from the Records Room. The archivists are very helpful, and
I swore on pain of death I'd return the books without damage." He
laughed. "Well, maybe not that serious."

"Maybe I should go to the Records Room. I'm really interested in
Dragonhealing." She then blinked. "Uhm…what do the two have to do with
each other though?" She motioned to the other book.

"Systems. How things work." He leaned forward. "Wires carry
electricity from one place to another, the way veins carry blood
inside a dragon. Inside us, too."

Immediately interested, Paetri forgot about her shyness and leaned
forward, listening. "I never thought of it that way." She paused.
"Do you think maybe I could borrow those when you are finished?
I'll ask the Records room staff."

"Oh, sure. I don't think they'd mind, as long as you made the same
dire promises I did." He laughed. "So how long have you been a
Candidate?"

Paetri laughed and it immediately brought light to her face, brightening
up the narrow features. "I'll be sure to do that!" She took a sip of her
klah and tilted her head. "Not too long. About nine sevendays, I think.
I'm still getting used to everything. It's so different from home.
I would have never been allowed to read those at home!"

He frowned at the books. "I suppose they would've thought it was too
close to crafting." He smiled at her. "Well, now you can learn
anything you like! You can craft if you want to. Do you want to?"

"Oh, I am learning about Healing dragons! I love it. I assist mainly
with flits though. Scratches, that sort of thing. I would have never
been able to before. I think I'd rather be in the Infirmary than
anywhere. Do you have a craft too?"

He shook his head. "I like too many of them. It's hard to pick one."

Paetri frowned. "Well, I guess since you're a candidate that you
don't have to pick just one." She tugged her ear. "But what if
you don't Impress? Don't you have to pick one then?"

"Well, I don't _have_ to, but I suppose I should since I'm not made
out for drudge work." He shrugged. "But I have time to think about
that, and here I have a lot of choices without having to apply to a
Hall."

"Just pick your favorite?" Paetri smiled for a moment before faltering.
"You have to think of the future."

"Well, if I Impress, _that_ will be my future. I can go on learning
little bits of everything."

It really didn't make sense to Paetri not to be prepared. Everyone
thought they would Impress, she supposed. But she couldn't
help that niggling doubt in the back of her mind. She couldn't
rest her entire future on something that may not happen. But Jykri
was a bit different; she almost wished she could think like that.
"I guess you're right."

"Don't worry about it. We'll both Impress and be weyrlings together,
and you'll become a fine dragonhealer. And I'll learn everything about
everything." He smiled.

She found it hard not to worry about those sort of things. But after
taking a deep breath, she nodded. "You're right. I'll try not to
worry. Maybe we can help each other learn after we Impress."
