I Don't Want to Go

Writers: AL, Chelle
Date Posted: 28th August 2012

Characters: Asley, Meledei
Description: The printer meets up with the goldrider again and they discuss her problem.
Location: Dolphin Cove Weyr
Date: month 9, day 9 of Turn 6

Meledei let the
coolness of the water caress her body as she floated in
the lake. She felt
weightless, her form buoyed by the liquid that
gently lapped at her limbs.
She closed her eyes to simply enjoy the
feel of water beneath and sunshine
above, the combination which allowed
her muscles to relax. It was a lovely
day, and while Meledei did enjoy
traveling, it was nice to just stay home
sometimes with nothing to do.

Asley had climbed up on one of the rocks
buried in the sand and was
surreptitiously watching some of the rather bare
female bodies in the
water. When she discovered that one of them belonged to
a certain
young goldrider, she became even more secretive about her
glances.
She made a pretense of sunbathing, though she planned to get into
the
water when it got too hot.

}:There is another girl here.:{ Elleth
was not oblivious to Asley's
presence. The gold opened one eye from where
she lay upon a large
rock, then let it close again.

Meledei opened her
own eyes and then straightened up to tread the
water. She smiled when she
saw the newly familiar face. "Hey Asley!"
She called out and lifted a hand
to wave at the crafter.

Hoping she hadn't been caught out, the printer
sat up and looked
slightly innocent, as if she'd only just noticed Meledei.
"Oh hello,
weyrwoman. How are you and your queen today?" **Quite fine by the
looks
of things**

"Good, what about you? Coming to swim?" Meledei
eased out a few lazy
strokes to get closer to the shore and keep from
shouting.

"Umm I can... It is hot I guess.." She appeared to hem and haw
about
getting wet before she entered the water and dipped herself
under
before coming back up. "You swim a lot, don't you?"

"I love the
water." Meledei turned over on her back again and did a
few lazy strokes in
a circle. "And it feels good on a hot day."

"I like sitting in the
water, but I don't swim much. I can...I mean I came
from a seahold but...it's
nice to just be cool and still. Where did you
come from?" Asley hadn't
remembered learning that small fact.

"Thayan Peak originally, then, of
course, here." Meledei moved to
shallow water and stretched out once her
feet could touch the floor.
"What about you? Which
seahold?"

"Topaz...but I was born at Southern Boll." Both were on the
ocean, of
course so it was a common theme. Asley was one of the rare
northerners
who had come to the South. It was probably why she was one of the
rare
female crafters.

"Wow, you came a long way. How did you get to
Topaz?" Meledei finally
eased out of the water to perch upon a rock where
she could still dangle
her legs into the smooth liquid.

"I came along
with my brother. It was his decision. Then, when everything
went all topsy
turvy...the Hall came here and all of that so I came here too."
It was
simple enough really. And Asley had discovered she was different
when given
the freedom to do so.

"Topsy turvy indeed. Now things are about to get
topsy turvy again,
aren't they?" Meledei didn't really envy the girl. She
had to wonder
whether or not Asley would still be allowed to craft after the
move.
She hoped so.

"That's the right of it. The only hope I have is
getting my knots so I can
ask to stay here for my first posting or maybe
another Weyr." It would be
better than Emerald Falls. She knew Meledei didn't
have any sway over the
crafters, even as a goldrider, but it felt good for
someone to know how
she felt-to bother listening.

"You could ask now.
You never know. I mean, you don't have to stay
with the Hall, do you?"
Meledei could understand why she might want to,
but she personally didn't see
a female crafter being welcomed after the
move. Holders had some strange
ideas.

"Unfortunately because of how few printers there are-in order to
advance,
I do have to. There's nowhere else to study." Leave it to Asley to
pick
the craft that would do that.

"Oh, I guess that makes sense."
Meledei wrinkled her nose. "A shame. I
certainly hope you don't encounter
any difficulties." She had a
feeling, though, the girl was going to have a
bumpy road ahead of her.

"If it's worth doing, it wouldn't be easy." She
gave a lopsided grin.
"I'm sure you figured that out already though with
Elleth and all."

"I've said that before." Meledei laughed and nodded.
"And yes. The
things worth the most sometimes are the hardest." She yawned,
then
patted her belly. "You hungry? Want to get something to
eat?"

"Why sure," she agreed before moving to gather up her things. She
was
going to eat with Meledei!
