"So, how is the senior class? Any last concerns about putting the
older ones into the Wings?" N'vanik asked Sh'del. They were sitting in
his office. Although the Weyrleader preferred to be outside in the
shade whenever he could, this was a serious meeting and he didn't want
a weyrling or one of their friends overhearing.
"To be honest...no. They're a good lot, this class." Sh'del sat back
and studied his old friend.
"Good to hear. I've got my eye on a few of them, and I'm sure D'shiel
and the other Wingleaders do too." With the new riders, they'd be back
up to the strength they'd been at before the disaster.
"Yeah? Wonder if the new Weyrwoman would like a few as well. We
think one if the girls might be pregnet but not saying anything.
Crafter girl," he added by way of explanation for her behaviour.
"Hmm. Have someone talk to her, one of the assistants Searched from
Hall or Hold. Explain to her what can happen if she _is_ pregnant and
does too much /betweening/. I know you already covered it, but some
people need a reminder." The girl needed to understand she was in a
Weyr now and pregnancy wasn't a thing of shame. It was a practical
matter that needed careful consideration.
"I will. But I also would like her to be considered for the Queen's
wing. Being around mostly females would do her a world of good. What
do you think of the new Weyrwoman?"
N'vanik shrugged. "Seems okay."
"Just okay?". His eyes danced, thinking about the rumours he had heard.
"She seems competent, but then, so did Janani." Not that Janani wasn't
competent, just that she'd ... left.
"Yeah well, at least Janni didn't have to fight you_and_Qorri as well."
"What do you mean?"
" I think you two played a bit if tag team on the poor lady, that's
what I mean. Making plans without including the woman who rides the
senior gold is never a good idea, my friend. They get chosen for a
reason." He levelled a look at his old friend. "A very good reason."
"She's senior because the last one abandoned us. Cyradis isn't
'chosen' she's just the best of the current options." Meledei was too
young, and the other goldrider too useless.
"I meant gold riders in general."
"Ah, you mean like Trae, who cracked her shell, and Janani, who
abandoned us. Yeah, I'm sure they're all perfect." His early decision
to avoid goldriders had been a good one, although Rhosyn and Meledei
were proven exceptions.
Like old friends do, Sh'del was thinking of the same people. "No, I
meant friends like Rhosyn and good kids like Meledei. So what if Trae
lost the plot, that's no reason to take it out on the new one."
"I don't trust that she'll stay. I'm not making plans without her, I'm
making sure things _stay the same_ in case she leaves. And she isn't
confirmed yet. We still might get a surprise." A very unpleasant one.
Sh'del groaned at that and stood up. "Well, we're not getting any
work done, let's see if the Weyrwoman you_do_like would like to meet
us at the Tavern over at Amber Hills."
"Best idea I've heard all day!"
